Bandipora, June 1: The Bandipora Journalists Association (BJA) on Sunday strongly condemned the alleged use of abusive language and threats against journalist Bilal Rahami of reputed news agency-Kashmir News Service by officials of the Forest Department after he reported on issues related to the functioning and management of Chandaji Park in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
In a statement, the association said that Rahami was subjected to repeated phone calls from department officials after the publication of his report. It alleged that the journalist was threatened and spoken to in an abusive manner for carrying out his professional responsibilities.
The association termed the incident an attack on press freedom and said journalists have a constitutional and professional duty to report on matters of public interest without fear, intimidation or interference.
“Attempting to silence journalists through threats, pressure or abusive conduct is unacceptable and undermines the principles of a free and independent press,” the statement said.
The BJA expressed solidarity with Rahami and called upon the authorities to ensure the safety and dignity of media professionals while they perform their duties.
The association urged the Chief Conservator of Forests and other senior officials of the department to take immediate cognisance of the matter and initiate a fair inquiry into the allegations. It also demanded strict action against any official found responsible for threatening or harassing the journalist.
