A mega cleanliness and plantation drive was conducted today in Gurez on the occasion of Earth Day. The cleanliness drive which commenced form the Dawar Market witnessed participation of more than 300 locals incl officials of the Army, District Administration, Police and students from different schools and youth of Govt Degree college.
SDM Gurez Dr. Mudasir Ahmad Wani flagged off the event from the main Chowk of Dawar market and the rally culminated in front of the Log Hut Cafe after completing a full 2 km circle of the Dawar town. The SDM also distributed 200 saplings to the participants which they planted in their respective schools and colleges.
The participants and the youth raised slogans of “GUREZ SAJ RAHA HAI, JASHN-E-GUREZ KE LIYE.” And “GO GREEN, GO GUREZ”
The main aim of the drive was to spread awareness and to make Gurez a plastic free zone. The participants were also educated about waste management and actions for conservation of nature.
The event gave a strong message to the world that despite being a remote valley facing multiple challenges, hardships and lack of proper infrastructure, locals of Gurez are united in conserving and developing this beautiful valley into a thriving eco tourism destination.
