MHA declares Pak-based Kashmir citizen as ‘militant’ under UAPA

Srinagar, Oct 4 : Ministry of Home Affairs-Government of India has declared a North Kashmiri citizen who is presently staying in Pakistan as a ‘militant’ under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a notification in this regard that reads that Showkat Ahmad Sheikh alias Showkat Mochi native of Ganai Hamam Baramulla is presently operating as Chief Launching Commander of the militant outfit Hizb-ul- Mujahideen in Pakistan.

The notification further reads that Showkat Ahmed in involved in militant activities and is instrumental in spreading militancy and violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

The MHA said that since Hizb-ul-Mujhadeen is a banned organization and Showkat Ahmed is acting as its launching commander and is involved in coordinating infiltration and recruitment of militants and execution of militant attacks owing to his deep network of associates in North Kashmir, he is being declared as a ‘militant’ under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
