SRINAGAR, Aug 15: The streets of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, came alive with the vibrant celebration of Independence Day on Tuesday.

The iconic Bakshi Stadium turned into a breathtaking spectacle as it was adorned with the magnificent colours of saffron, white, and green, representing the spirit of unity and independence.

People from all walks of life with various age groups, including women, children, and the elderly, were observed patiently waiting in long lines outside the entrance gates of Bakshi Stadium. They were eagerly waiting to enter the stadium and be a part of the 77th Independence Day celebrations.

According to witnesses, the crowd started assembling outside the venue early in the morning, around 8 a.m., and gradually formed lines to enter the premises.

Some women expressed their delight at the reduced security inconveniences this time, mentioning that they were attending the event for the first time. They expressed their happiness at witnessing the parade and listening to the speech of the Lieutenant Governor, making the occasion even more special for them.

This was the first time Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar, set a record with the huge number of people who participated in the Independence Day celebration.

Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Despatch that the resounding beats of music and the rhythmic movements of dance filled the air at the newly renovated Clock Tower Ghanta Ghar in the busiest market, Lal Chowk, creating an atmosphere of excitement and jubilation. Hundreds of enthusiastic individuals, young and old, joined together in a grand gathering to commemorate this momentous occasion.

The celebration was a testament to the indomitable spirit of the people of Naya Kashmir, who have continuously strived for progress and prosperity after the abrogation of Article 370.

Not only did the festivities mark the freedom that Naya Kashmir cherishes, but they also symbolised the rich cultural heritage of the region. The melodies of traditional Kashmiri music echoed through the streets, intertwining with the graceful movements of folk dancers, showcasing the diversity and beauty of Kashmiri culture. The celebration became a vibrant tapestry of expressions, weaving together the past, present, and future of Naya Kashmir, they said.

Talking to Kashmir Despatch, Gujrat resident Kartik said that it’s really a great moment in Kashmir, which is really changing towards development, peace, and prosperity. He said earlier that I had been here also, but the comfort and love I witnessed this time on the ground are beyond words. He said there is a massive change between that Kashmir and today’s Kashmir.

According to the Divisional Commissioner, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, as per Kashmir Despatch, the 77th Independence Day function received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

He said the celebration was live telecasted from Lal Chowk, which is a significant accomplishment. The entire Administration, led by the LG, deserves credit for this achievement.

He said the participation of children alongside officials made this year’s function particularly special. The Divisional Commissioner also emphasised the importance of cherishing freedom, enjoying life, and staying away from drugs for a healthy and fulfilling life.
