The National Conference (NC), which emerged as the largest party in the recent Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections by winning 42 out of 90 seats, has now secured a clear majority. The party received crucial support from four Independent MLAs—Pyaray Lal Sharma (Inderwal), Satish Sharma (Chhamb), Choudhary Mohammed Akram (Surankote), and Dr. Rameshwar Singh (Bani). Their combined support has boosted NC’s tally to 46 seats, surpassing the required majority mark in the Assembly.
This development significantly reduces the need for NC to rely on its pre-poll allies, Congress and CPI(M), in forming the new government. Congress, which had earlier been in alliance with NC, secured only 6 seats and is now being sidelined, as the party no longer holds decisive power in the formation of the government.
Independent MLA Pyaray Lal Sharma, while announcing his support for NC, stated that it was unconditional, and despite running as an Independent, he has always been associated with NC and continues to trust the party’s leadership.
With this support, NC is now in a strong position to form the government without needing further alliances.
