SRINAGAR, Dec 4: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken cognisance of serious environmental concerns raised over the proposed industrial estate in Trenz village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district. Hearing an Original Application (OA) challenging the project, the Tribunal observed that the petition “raises substantial issues relating to compliance of environmental norms,” and proceeded to issue formal notices to all respondents.
The Tribunal has directed the applicant to ensure that copies of the petition and accompanying documents are duly served to the concerned respondents. An affidavit of service must also be filed at least one week before the next date of hearing, the NGT ordered.
The controversy stems from the Jammu & Kashmir Administrative Council’s decision in February 2024, under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, approving the establishment of a new industrial estate in Trenz. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 68 crore, proposes to utilise 500 kanals of state land located near the banks of the Rambiara river—an ecologically sensitive area that has prompted objections from environmental activists and local residents.
The matter has now been listed for its next hearing before the NGT on February 24, 2026, where the respondents are expected to clarify their position on environmental safeguards, land use, and compliance with statutory norms.
