Srinagar, July 14: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday paid an emotional tribute to his uncle and veteran National Conference leader Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, who passed away earlier in the evening at Paras Hospital in Srinagar.
In a statement, Omar Abdullah said his father’s younger brother had been unwell for several months and his health worsened four days ago.
“My father’s younger brother Dr Mustafa Kamal passed away earlier this evening at Paras hospital in Srinagar. Uncle Mustafa had been unwell for some months but took a turn for the worse 4 days ago. He put up a brave fight holding on against the odds. The doctors & staff treating him were amazing but Allah called him for his final journey. May Allah grant uncle Mustafa the highest place in Jannat,” he said.
Sheikh Mustafa Kamal was the son of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and younger brother of former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah. He served as a minister in the state cabinets of 1983, 1987 and 1996.
Party leaders, colleagues and well-wishers expressed condolences and remembered Kamal as a forthright leader who remained active in J&K politics for decades.
