Decision on Article 370 taken in transparent manner’, says PM Modi

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his government’s decision to scrap Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir was a transparent one and he appreciated the leadership of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the understanding it has shown on India’s step.

“As far as Article 370 is concerned, our internal steps were taken in a completely democratic, open, transparent and constitutional manner. They were designed to end the isolation that had kept Jammu-Kashmir underdeveloped to serve the vested interests of a few. This isolation also allowed some of the youth to be misguided, get radicalised and take to violence and terrorism. We cannot afford to let these tendencies get any foothold in our harmonious society and distract us from the primary tasks of growth and development of the entire country,” he told Khaleej Times in an interview.

PM Modi who arrived in the UAE on Friday for the second leg of his three-nation visit was accorded the Order of Zayed, the country’s highest civilian decoration. Modi said India and the UAE have exemplary cooperation to ensure mutual security.

“Both India and the UAE have a common interest in ensuring that the anti-humanity forces that shelter or promote terrorism in any way are compelled to give up their destructive policies. The UAE has shown full understanding of the strong steps we have taken against terrorism. We have exemplary cooperation to ensure mutual security,” he said.In the wide ranging interview, Modi also said his government was focused on empowering India’s poor and marginalized.

“The years from 2014 to 2019 were about fulfilling the basic developmental requirements of our people. This included providing basic facilities such as bank accounts, smoke-free kitchens, social security, healthcare, etc, which were lacking for seven long decades. Now, the time has come to go a step ahead and deliver on people’s aspirations and expectations and build a ‘New India’ of hope and progress,” he said. The UAE is one of the Islamic countries that have rejected the concept of triple talaq or instant divorce. In his interview, Modi stressed that his government’s decision too utlaw the practice has been welcomed from all walks of life.

“The medieval practice of Triple Talaq has become history. For years, this caused injustice to several women belonging to the Muslim community, preventing them from fulfilling their dreams. That impediment has gone. I am delighted to say that this decision has been hailed by several Muslim women and people from all walks of life in India,” the PM said.

Delhi HC to hear on Sep 3 plea against Shah Faesal’s detention

0

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court said on Friday it will hear on September 3 former IAS officer Shah Faesal’s plea alleging he was illegally detained at Delhi airport on August 14 and taken back to Srinagar where he has been kept under house arrest.

A bench of Justices Manmohan and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal asked both sides to file their submissions and listed the matter for hearing on September 3.

The court declined to give an earlier date, saying the matter will take time and “it is not going to happen overnight”. “A week or 10 days will not matter,” the bench said and also made it clear that it was not going to examine the issue of Faesal’s travel to the US for his studies as it was not a prayer sought in the habeas corpus plea moved on his behalf.

The bench listed the matter on September 3 as Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta was not available during the first half of the day as he was arguing in the Supreme Court.

Faesal’s lawyers, during the brief hearing, sought that his son and parents be allowed to meet him. The bench said Faesal’s wife, son and parents can meet him, but not all of them together. The central government said it will ensure that the family can meet Faesal.

Despite tensions, Pak stands ready to open Kartarpur Corridor: Qureshi

0

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday said that despite tensions with India, it stands ready to open the Kartarpur Corridor and welcome the Sikh pilgrims to take part in celebrations in connection with the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said this while speaking to a delegation of civil society and parliamentarians of Afghanistan, which is currently visiting Pakistan for the ‘Track-II dialogue, Beyond Boundaries’. Tension between India and Pakistan has escalated after New Delhi revoked Article 370 of the Constitution which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories on August 5.

“Despite our tensions with India, we have decided go ahead with Kartarpur Corridor and we stand ready to welcome the Sikh pilgrims for the 550th anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak,” Qureshi told the delegation.

The Kartarpur corridor will connect Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Kartarpur with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district and facilitate visa-free movement of Indian Sikh pilgrims, who will have to just obtain a permit to visit Kartarpur Sahib, which was established in 1522 by Guru Nanak Dev.

Pakistan is building the corridor from the Indian border to the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib while the other part from Dera Baba Nanak up to the border will be constructed by India.

Qureshi also told the delegation that current tension with India will not affect Pakistan’s relationship with Afghanistan.
Border (with Afghanistan) will not be closed nor trade will stop. Why should Afghans suffer because of the idiosyncratic behaviour of Narendra Modi, Qureshi was quoted as saying. Despite tensions with India, Pakistan is totally focused on the situation and its role in Afghanistan.

It (Kashmir situation) can be a huge distraction but we are very clear what we need to do in Afghanistan, he added while responding to a question if escalation of tension with India can distract Pakistan. Qureshi said that Pakistan did not believe in any strategic depth. We want good neighbourly relations with Afghanistan and peaceful co-existence.

We have no favourites in the upcoming election. It is not our business who governs Afghanistan. We will not interfere. Whoever you [Afghanistan] will choose, we will work with them.” The foreign minister emphasised that honesty was the best way forward between the two countries.

It is foolish to think we can trick each other, he said, adding that blaming each other was not an option. Accusatory statement will not help each other. He also said that we do not want Talibanisation of any region but they [Taliban] are Afghans and they are a reality. He added: We will also support intra-Afghan dialogue.

The process has to be Afghan-owned and Afghan-led. Qureshi told the delegation that he had invited the foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s and China for a trilateral meeting. The foreign minister will come to Pakistan in the first week of September for the talks, he added.

Kashmir restrictions back as posters surface calling for march to UN office

0

Restrictions were imposed in Srinagar city on Friday after posters issued by the separatists called on people to march to the local United Nations military observer group office, officials said.

Restrictions were eased in most areas of Kashmir this week, with barricades being lifted and the movement of people and traffic increasing gradually, but markets remained shut and mobile and Internet services suspended for the 18th day on Thursday.

Posters had appeared in certain localities of the city, in which the Joint Resistance Leadership (JLR) conglomerate have asked peoples to march to the UN military observer group to protest against the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The separatists have claimed that the Centre’s move to scrap Article 370 was an attempt to change the demography of the Muslim-majority state.

Barricades and concertina wires were erected at many places to prevent people from marching to Lal Chowk and Sonawar, where the UN office is located, the officials said, adding that the security forces had been deployed at strength at many places to maintain law and order.

Several leaders in the Valley have been kept in preventive custody after the Centre had on August 5 revoked almost all the provisions of Article 370, which gave special status to the state, and bifurcated it into Union territories.

Jammu airport to be shut from October 1

0

Jammu, : With the Airport Authority of India (AAI) deciding to shut the Jammu airport for at least 15 days from October 1 to resurface the runway, the authorities seem to be in a fix to deal with the situation arising out after suspension of all commercial flights.

On an average, at least 24 commercial flights (Indian Airlines, Go Air, Vistara, Indigo, Go India and others) operate from the Jammu airport for Delhi, Srinagar, Mumbai, Bathinda, Lucknow and some other cities on a daily basis.

If sources are to be believed, the authorities are exploring the options of operating some aircraft from Udhampur or Pathankot as alternate arrangements to deal with VVIP and emergency visits during the period of resurfacing of the runway.

Sources said the proposed closure of the Jammu airport had nothing to do with its expansion as the Indian Air Force (IAF) would do resurfacing of the runway.

“The airport will remain closed for all flights for 15 days from October 1. The decision with regard to alternate arrangements is to be taken by the administration. We are in constant touch with them (administration),” Pravat Ranjan Beuria, Airport Director told The Tribune.

The sources in the administration said the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma was overseeing overall development at the Jammu airport but no alternate arrangements so far had been made to ensure that “visitors and passengers” do not face any difficulty.

“The authorities will take a call on it (alternate arrangements). We are holding discussions with them. We are working on it and have identified two-three places as an alternate arrangement to operate some flights,” Verma responded.

The sources claimed that the Indian Air Force might be requested to make alternate arrangements in case of VVIP visits in Jammu during the period of resurfacing of the runway.

The AAI Jammu had started the expansion of runway up to 8,000 ft from the existing 6,700 ft in July last year. Its deadline was set as March 2020.

On August 16, Deputy Commissioner Sushma Chauhan, in a meeting here, had asked the executing agencies to provide tree-free and structure-free land to the AAI to expedite the expansion project.

Former JK CM’S will remain in custody for more time : Sources

Srinagar: The release of the two former CM’s of the Jammu and Kashmir state, Omar Abdullah of National Confrence and Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP who are in custody after the abrogation of Article 370 is yet to be announced.

A senior official made it clear that any decision regarding the release of the detained leaders as a precautionary measure will depend on the opinion of the local administration and the situation there.

The official said, it is very difficult to say when the detained leaders will be released. He indicated that there is no hurry in the matter. Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been detained at separate guesthouses in Srinagar, while Farooq Abdullah is under house arrest. Leaders of other political parties have also been detained at the guest houses.

The state administration has not disclosed the number of leaders to be detained since August 5. Based on the estimate, the number is reported to be more than two thousand. The Government’s move is also being criticised. The case was also taken to court but the court has refused to issue any guidelines to the government in this regard. The court has asked the government to give more time.

Solidarity protest for people of Kashmir in Auckland, New Zealand

0

New Zealanders of Kashmir origin have gathered at Aotea Square to raise awareness about the worsening situation for people living in the region.

Ikhlaq Kashkari, who is the chairman of the Muslim community, led the peaceful vigil while other speakers came after him sharing their thoughts on the situation.

“If you take my parents, they are in their 80s, they went back to Kashmir a month ago. I have no information about them, I’ve got no information on how they are? Have they got food? Have they got their medication?”

Kashkari has spent most of his life in New Zealand and has devoted his time to ensuring there is peace back in his homeland.

“They have cut off all the internet, they’ve cut off all the mobile phones, all the landlines. All the local media has been cut off, you’re not allowed to print any media, no local TV, no local newspaper,” he says.

“They have locked everybody in their houses, they’re not allowed to move out, doesn’t matter whether you’re sick, healthy, old or child,” says Kashkari.

“There is no food supply and they’re pretty much beating people in that region. People have nowhere to go out, they are literally locked inside the valley.”

“As part of this exercise, they’ve basically torn that treaty, like tearing the treaty of Waitangi, like it doesn’t exist,” he says.

“Anywhere that is forcefully, anything is taken away from the people, we can’t do that in today’s world. Colonisers have done that in the past, but we’re not in that era anymore”.

The Kashmir locals are anxious to make contact with their families back home.
