We are no more a democracy: Ghulam Nabi Azad

0

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday claimed that India was no more a democracy. Azad”s remarks came while he was addressing an all party meet, called by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) at Jantar Mantar protesting against the house arrest of senior political leaders of Kashmir.

“Let me tell you, we are no more a democracy. If anyone thinks that he is living in democracy that person is living in fool”s paradise,” Azad said.
Azad added that, “When I was the Minister of Information and Broadcasting I had no guts to call editor of state owned media platforms to drop a story. But now any random leader of the ruling party calls any media outlet, its editors or owners to drop the story and the outlet has to oblige. This is not a democracy.”

Azad urged the Central government to restore all the Telecom services in Jammu and Kashmir and to release all the political prisoners and leaders including Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti.

“Landline is not even used by 0.001 per cent of the civilians in Jammu and Kashmir, only government officials use it. If you really claim that everything is peaceful in Kashmir, then open mobile services,” Azad added.

Among those participating in the demonstration was the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and the Indian Union Muslim League.
Congress leaders Karti Chidambaram and Ghulam Nabi Azad, RJD”s Manoj Jha, CPI(M) leaders Sitaram Yechury and Brinda Karat, Samajwadi Party”s Ram Gopal Yadav and senior leaders from the DMK among others were present at the meet.

On August 5, the government removed Jammu and Kashmir”s special status and split the state into two Union Territories that will come into effect on October 31.

The region has been put under heavy security restrictions, which have been eased gradually since. Several political leaders — including former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti — are still in detention.

No point of talking to India: Pakistan PM Imran Khan

0

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday said his country is no longer interested in a dialogue with India.

“There is no point in talking to them. I mean, I have done all the talking. Unfortunately, now when I look back, all the overtures that I was making for peace and dialogue, I think they took it for appeasement. There is nothing more that we can do,” said Khan in an interview published in the New York Times.

This comes after various leaders around the world asked Pakistan to engage bilaterally with India to end tensions that escalated following New Delhi’s decision to reorganise the state of Jammu and Kashmir. India has repeatedly made it clear that talks with Pakistan is only possible after Islamabad stops sponsoring terror.

Imran Khan even failed to get the support of the United States despite his highly publicised visit last month to Washington where he supposedly struck a friendship with President Donald Trump.During a phone conversation last week with Khan, Trump made it clear that Kashmir issue should be resolved through a bilateral dialogue between India and Pakistan.

Recently, France and Sweden had also advised Pakistan to engage in talks with India.
Rattled by India’s move, Pakistan had sent its foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to China to seek its help at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), urging for an emergency meeting on the issue. However, four out of five permanent members in the United Nations did not support Pakistan contentions over India’s decision.

Cash-strapped Pakistan has also alleged that India’s decision of revoking the provisions under Article 370 will not only threaten the regional peace but also the world peace and further downgraded its diplomatic ties with its neighbour and suspended bilateral trade in the wake of it.However, at the end of the UNSC meeting, last week, China and Pakistan stood isolated as members after others refused to endorse their position.

Four out of five permanent members in the United Nations did not support the Pakistan contentions over India’s decision.

Shehla Rashid reasserts claims on J&K situation; gets into argument with journalists

0

Srinagar : Political activist Shehla Rashid on Thursday asserted that she stands by her comments about alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, as she got into an argument with journalists over the issue.

On August 18, Shehla Rashid had claimed that the Indian Army was indiscriminately picking up men, raiding houses and torturing people in Jammu and Kashmir. Asked about evidence for her controversial claims, which drew sharp reactions from the Indian Army, Shehla Rashid said, “I will give the evidence when the Indian Army constitutes an inquiry. I have given you my statement. Has the Army initiated any inquiry?”

“All I have said is based on authentic conversations with people who have come from Kashmir and have absolutely no reason to lie. I have given a lot of statements not just one. People are running out of LPG cylinders, cooking gas in Kashmir,” she said.

The former Vice President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union said if the Army initiates an inquiry, she will depose before them and “will give them the particulars of the incidents… where they have happened”. “Let them initiate an inquiry and if what I am saying is found to be true, then the Indian Army should given an assurance that the guilty will be punished,” she said.

When asked by a reporter to give evidence for the claims she made on Twitter, Shehla Rashid said, “Why should I give evidence to you? Why shouldn’t I tweet? Has it been banned under the Modi government?”

“You should go to Kashmir and show what’s happening on the ground. Indulging in hooliganism here will not serve any purpose. You are not showing what I am saying. I have not indulged in any rumour mongering. I am absolutely confident. I stand by my statement,” she said.

“There’s torture… gross human rights violations happening in Kashmir. If you want to become the government’s spokesperson, please be. I am not a government spokesperson. Please go and seek a post in the BJP headquarters and contest elections,” she said to one of the reporters.

No immediate plan to withdraw troops from J&K: Union Minister

0

The Centre, which had made Jammu and Kashmir a union territory, has no immediate plans to withdraw security forces from the troubled region in view of the continued tension, Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said.

He said that Pakistan was trying to provoke Kashmirs and disturb the peace so that it can go to international community (to complain).

The decision whether to withdraw or not will be taken by the local administration, Reddy told.

He said the situation in J&K is peaceful now and the Home Minister Amit Shah is regularly monitoring the situation.

Schools are open. In some places section 144 has been withdrawn. Government offices have started working. We are gradually relaxing some of the controls imposed. Internet and telephone services have been restored barring a few districts (four or five),” he said.

Opposition leaders should wait for some days to hold meetings in Jammu and Kashmir as the Centre has imposed certain restrictions in view of Pakistan’s intentions to see law and order is disturbed there, Reddy said.

Pakistan would like to see peace disturbed in J&K to tell the world that the government of India’s decisions vis-a-vis the state are wrong, he said.

Asked for his comments on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the reports of violence, he said, “small incidents” are not happening for the first time.

Now, there is no “tense situation in Jammu and Kashmir” where there used to be months-long curfew with leaders jailed for years in the past as well, he said.

“This is not new. We took some decisions such as imposing restrictions as a precautionary measure, keeping in view Pakistan’s attempts to provoke and conspire to somehow disturb law and order in Jammu and Kashmir. Certainly not to inconvenience people,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

In the past, there had been many instances of imposition of curfew, enforcement of prohibitory orders, closure of schools for months and arrest of Chief Ministers, he said.

Compared to the past, no such decisions have been taken now, he said.

“Pakistan is hatching many conspiracies to prove before the world what the government of India has done is wrong. Because today the whole world is in favour of India. Because the world is standing by the decisions taken by the government of India in the matter of abrogation of Article 370,” he said.

The government is taking all precautionary measures as either the ISI or Pakistan government was trying to somehow disturb law and order “to prove that what the government of India has done is wrong”, he said.

Asked why opposition leaders were not being allowed to hold meetings in the state, he said government has taken precautions in view of Pakistan’s intentions and the opposition leaders should have patience.

“There is a lot of time. You can go to Jammu and Kashmir… Hold peace for some days. Let’s see Pakistan’s problem now. After that, Rahul Gandhi can hold any number of meetings. Who is saying no? Have patience,” he said.

The abrogation of Article 370 would have benefits like implementation of the Constitution and reservations for SCs, STs and Backward Classes coming into force in the state, he said.

“Why are you in a hurry? On the one hand, Pakistan is making efforts to tell the world that there is no peace. Now, the opposition party also wants to go with Pakistan. This is wrong,” he said.

Asked when political leaders would be released in Jammu and Kashmir and the appropriate time, he said officers concerned would take a call on the matter.
