Chinese soldiers enter Demchok sector in Ladakh, protest hoisting of Tibetan flags

0

Srinagar: After some Tibetans hoisted Tibetan flags on the occasion of Dalai Lama’s birthday, Chinese soldiers crossed the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh division of Jammu and Kashmir last week.

Quoting officials in the know PTI reported that several PLA personnel drove in their SUV’s into Koyul village in Demchok sector, located close to the LAC, on July 6 and lodged a protest over hoisting of the Tibetan flags by the refugees settled there.

They, however, said since the LAC was not demarcated properly for decades, this has led to differing perceptions of it by India and China.

There was another version of the incident on the LAC with South Block sources saying the Chinese personnel, who were in “civilian clothes”, did not cross the LAC but showed banners that read “Ban all activities to split Tibet”.

“On July 6, some 11 Chinese in civilian clothes arrived in two vehicles when the Ladakhi villagers were celebrating Dalai Lama’s birthday. They then showed them banners and waited there for 30-40 minutes but did not cross the Line of Actual Control,” the sources said. The Tibetans were celebrating the 84th birthday of the Dalai Lama.

Indian army personnel were also present at the spot and did not allow the Chinese soldiers to proceed any further, the officials said.

The PLA personnel entered 1.5 km into the Indian territory, they said. Earlier, the officials claimed that the Chinese soldiers had entered 5 km.

After a couple of hours, the Chinese troops returned to their side following an assurance by Indian army officials that they would look into the action by the refugees. There have been also reports of Chinese soldiers stopping the shepherds from grazing their sheeps in Demchok sector.

Rashid is Afghanistan’s new captain for all formats

0

Star spinner Rashid Khan was on Friday appointed captain of the Afghanistan cricket team for all formats while Asghar Afghan, who was unceremoniously removed as skipper before the World Cup, will be his deputy.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), thus, has put an end to the split captaincy before it even came to effect.

Before the World Cup, Rahmat Shah was appointed Test captain while Gulbadin Naib emerged a surprise choice for ODI captaincy. Rashid himself was named the T20 captain.

“@rashidkhan_19 appointed as Team Afghanistan’s new Captain across all three formats while Asghar Afghan appointed as Vice-Captain,” the ACB tweeted.

At the World Cup, Afghanistan came close to upsetting biggies like India and Pakistan but eventually ended at the bottom of the 10-team table without a single win in nine games.

Twenty-year-old Rashid and seasoned Mohammad Nabi, the two IPL stars, had expressed displeasure at the removal of Asghar just ahead of the showpiece. Rashid has played two Tests, 68 ODIs and 38 T20s. Chief selector Dawlat Khan Ahmadzai and CEO Asadullah Khan have been sacked following the team’s winless campaign in the UK. Former ACB media manager Lutfullah Stanikzai has been named the new CEO.

Sending Dhoni to bat at No. 7 was a team decision: Ravi Shastri

0

London: India head coach Ravi Shastri revealed that sending M.S. Dhoni to bat at No. 7 in their 18-run World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand was a team decision.

In the first semifinal which was played over two days due to rain in Manchester, India restricted the Black Caps to 239/8 in 50 overs. But chasing the modest 240 for a place in the final, India were blown away by the Kiwi bowlers led by Matt Henry (3/37) on the reserve day.

India lost four top order batsmen for just 24 runs inside 10 overs before Ravindra Jadeja (77) and Dhoni (50) shared a 116-run seventh wicket stand to raise hopes of an unlikely victory. However, it wasn’t enough in the end as India fell short by 18 runs. But Dhoni was sent in to bat after Dinesh Karthik who came in at No. 5 followed by Hardik Pandya, raising quite a few eyebrows.

“It was a team decision. Everyone was in with it — and it was a simple decision, too. Last thing you wanted was Dhoni coming out to bat early and getting out — that would have killed the chase,” Shastri was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

“We needed his experience later. He is the greatest finisher of all times — and it would have been criminal to not make use of him in that way. The whole team was clear on it,” Shastri reasoned.India came into the tournament as one of the favourites to lift the crown. Throughout the group stages of the 10-team event, the Men in Blue played true to their favourites tag by winning seven of the eight games with the one against the Kiwis getting called off due to rain. They lost to England, but still managed to top the group with 15 points from nine matches.

It was in the semifinal that they stumbled and Shastri, like skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma, said 30 minutes of bad cricket cannot undermine the fact that India were good throughout the campaign.

“Walk out with your heads held high. Be proud. Those 30 minutes can’t erase the fact that you guys have been the best team in the last couple of years. You guys know it. One tournament, one series a” and that, too, 30 minutes of play can’t decide that. You guys have earned that respect. Of course, we are all hurt and disappointed but, in the end, be proud of what you have done for the last two years.,” Shastri said to the Indian team, he revealed to the Indian Express.Asked about India’s long standing problem of finding a stable No. 4 batsman, Shastri admitted that has been a area of concern and in the long run, the team needs a solid batter there.

“In hindsight, yes, we did need a solid batsman out there in the middle order. But now, that’s something for the future. That’s a position that was always giving us problems, but we just couldn’t nail it. (K.L.) Rahul was there but then Shikhar Dhawan got injured. Then Vijay Shankar was there, and he got injured. We just couldn’t control it.”

Shastri added that this Indian team is on the right path and with a couple of youngsters in the batting order, it would be more stronger.”This is a tough team. A magnificent team. Look at how we bowled. The way the batsmen batted. A couple of youngsters might come in the middle and make this even more stronger. It’s a team on the right path a” they know it.When you have played good and tough cricket for the last 30 months, this loss in the semi-final would hurt. It’s a tough pill to swallow and we are all gutted, but this is sport. That’s why we play it,” he concluded.

0

Varanasi, July 13 A female student of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Uttar Pradesh has accused two Proctorial Board security guards of stopping her from entering a campus toilet because she was a Dalit.

The guards have, however, denied the charges of discrimination and said they only stopped her from entering a men”s toilet.

Chief Proctor O.P. Rai has instituted a three-member committee to probe into the allegation.

According to reports, the complainant, who is studying arts and is an active member of BHU”s SC/ST Students” Programme Organising Committee, said she was working at the Bahujan Helpdesk near Mahila Mahavidyalaya premises for the past five days to guide college freshmen.

On Thursday, she tried to enter the Mahila Mahavidyalaya premises to use a toilet when the guards stopped her. They allegedly asked her to go to the hospital or college campus for using a toilet.

“Their attitude was discriminatory, inhuman and illegal,” the student said in her written complaint to the Chief Proctor. She has demanded ”immediate disciplinary action” against the guards.

On Friday, Rai said he had received the student”s complaint and met her personally to hear out her grievances.

“The accused guards were summoned. They have claimed that they stopped her because she was entering a men”s toilet. We have, however, formed a panel, which includes two women officials, to probe into the matter,” Rai said. He said action would be taken based on the committee”s report.
