Forces launch search operation in Harwan Sopore

Sopore, Jun 28 : Forces on Friday morning launched a cordon-and-search operation in north Kashmir’s Sopore village.

Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said a joint team of forces including Army’s 22 RR, special operation group of police (SOG) and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Harwan village of Sopore.

The joint team of forces conducted house to house search operation in the area and sealed all entry and exit points reports added.

A police officer also confirmed this cordon and search operation to Kashmir Despatch and said following suspecious movement searches were launched in the area.

Searches in the area was on when last reports came in.

Srinagar, June 28: A militant has been killed in ongoing operation after a fierce gunfight broke out between militants and goverment forces at Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday pre-dawn hours.

Official sources told that one militant body has been recovered from the encounter site amid search operation underway. The identity of the slain militant is yet to be ascertained.

Earlier Reports said that a joint team of army’s 50 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam late last night.

An officer said that as the joint team intensified searches at around 3:15 am, the hiding militants opened indiscriminate fire and hurled grenade, the fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. (GNS)

Srinagar, June 28 : A fierce gunfight broke out between militants and goverment forces at Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday pre-dawn hours.

Reports reaching said that a joint team of army’s 50 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam late last night.

Confirming it, a police official told that the cordon was laid following inputs about the presence of some militants.

He said that as the joint team intensified searches at around 3:15 am, the hiding militants opened indiscriminate fire and hurled grenade, the fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.

When reports last came in the firefight was going on. (GNS)

Fire engulfs in Hotel Zam Zam in Gulmarg

Gulmarg, Jun 27 : Second Hotel in a month gutted in a fire mishap in a tourist destination Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said a fire broke out in Hotel Zam Zam at Gulmarg this evening.

The fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the flames reports added.

A police officer also confirmed the incident to Kashmir Despatch and said teams of fire service, police are on job to douse the flames and put fire under control.

Pertinently, last month Green Park Hotel was damaged in a fire mishap.

Sopore, 27 June 2019: Sopore Police seeks help of general public to trace out the missing lady namely Mysara Begum W/O Gowhar Nazir Bhat R/O Duroo Sopore.

Gowhar Nazir Bhat S/O Nazir Ahmad Bhat R/O Duroo Sopore reported Police Post Warpora that his wife is missing since morning. After searching for her all over, they could not find her.

Sopore residents allege usage of substandard material in road construction

Sopore, Jun 27 : Residents of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district accused Roads and Building (R&B) department of using poor quality material in macadamization of roads in the town.


Residents of Batpora area of Sopore on Thursday claimed that the patches macadamised by Roads and Building department broke within 24 hours of completion of work showing the quality of the material used by the contractors to macadamize the roads in the town.


The residents of other areas also alleged department for using sub standard material in the work.


Group of people talking with Kashmir Despatch said that only after one night of macadamization, it developed cracks and road got damaged partially which clearly states usage of poor quality material in construction.


However, the residents have appealed Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore to look into the matter and take action against the department as well as contractor.

Mirwaiz grieved over death of school children in accident

Srinagar, June 27 : Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic death of 11 school children including nine girls in a road accident at Peer Ki Gali, Mughal Road.

Mirwaiz expressed condolence over with the bereaved families especially the parents of the deceased and prayed for early recovery of those injured in the incident.

Mirwaiz expressed regret over the loss of precious lives in accidents on daily basis. (GNS)

Army allegedly denies permission to ‘Back to Village’ team in Poonch

Poonch, Jun 27: Army on Thursday allegedly denied permission to a ‘Back to Village’ team from visiting villages falling in the forward area of Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

Reports  said that the ‘Back to Village’ team continuing with its scheduled itinerary had to visit at least two villages falling in the forward areas.

While reaching Balakote village, the team led by Nodal Officer Mohammad Rafiq Choudhary sought permission from Army to go beyond the gate, which, according to the official, was denied to them despite repeated requests.

“We sought permission from them (army) to allow us to visit the area to hear the grievances of public but we were not allowed, the official said, adding, “We remained there for half an hour to persuade them but had no option than to return without going beyond.”

The Nodal Officer was accompanied by a team including local Sarpanch, Panch and villagers.

The team, as per reports, apprised SDM Mendhar Dr Sahil Jandyal about the situation who later on deputed Naib Tehsildar to facilitate the movement of the team. “But we faced disappointment as we had to return back without hearing by army,” the official said.

“Soon after returning, we apprised SDM of the situation again who then sent Naib Tehsildar to assess the situation,” the official said, adding, “To our utter disappointment he wasn’t even allowed to talk and pushed back by the army deputed there.”

Abdul Zubair Khan, an employee who was part of the team while talking to news agency said they were shown “utter disdain” by the army personnel deputed at the gate.

“They paid no heed to our requests and exhibited utter disdain,” he said, adding, “If a magistrate level officer is treated like this, what a common man can expect from them (army).”

Meanwhile, SDM Mendhar  said he will look into the matter.

“We will look into it as why they were denied the permission,” he said, adding, “There was perhaps some sort of suspicious movement which probably may be the reason for the denial.” (GNS)

Massive drive against timber smuggling in Shopian

One vehicle seized and two persons handed over to police

Shopian, June 27: Forest department of Shopian district came into full swing, started massive drive against smugglers and forest law abusers with in the district. The department came into action after two employees were suspended by Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Dr Owais Ahmed. During the intervening night a team of officials on directions of Divisional Forest Officer, Muhammad Shafi Sheikh, laid a Naka near Rajpora on a specific information and succeeded in apprehending a Tata mobile vehicle loaded with illicit timber along with two suspects namely Manzoor Ahmed Bhat, a sawmill owner of Village parigam of Kakapora Range and Showkat Ahmed Sofi of Dooniwara Chadoora, District  Budgam.

A case has been registered in police station Rajpora and culprits have been handed over to police.The departmental investigation has been initiated and source of timber is being ascertained. 

The move came just a day after DC Shopian adopted a tough stance against illegal timber smuggling and green felling in the district. Meanwhile DFO Shopian said that his department in collaboration with district administration is fully prepared for tackling the smuggling of forest wood and green trees. He added that a massive operation has been launched to tackle the menace.

Private school building gutted in mysterious blaze in Central Kashmir

Srinagar, June 27: A first-floor of a private school building was gutted completely in a mysterious fire incident at Bun Zanigam area of Beerwah in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Thursday evening.

Reports said that the fire broke out inside the first-floor of Sadi Memorial English Medium School at Bun Zanigam area today evening.

However, fire tenders were pressed into service to douse off the fire which was later brought under control with help of locals. In the mishap, the school’s first story gutted completely, they said.

A police officer also confirmed the incident police have taken cognizance of the incident.

He said that a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and all angles would be looked into to ascertain the cause of fire. (GNS)
