Three weeks after Sri Lanka witnessed multiple suicide bombings, that killed over 260 people, the nation imposed a curfew following the rise of anti-Muslim riots where a Muslim man was killed while a dozen mosques and shops were decimated.

As the country goes through worst phases cricketers like Kumar Sangakkara has urged the citizens for peace.

“STOP. BREATHE. THINK. OPEN YOUR EYES. If we lose ourselves in violence, racism, thuggery and hatred we lose our country. Unite as Sri Lankans, be peaceful, keep each other safe. US on verge of defeat; will quit Afghanistan soon, claims chief Taliban negotiator

0

The United States is on the verge of defeat and will quit Afghanistan soon, the Taliban’s chief negotiator has claimed.

According to a report by Voice of America, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai made the assertions in an April 28 speech to an “internal gathering” in Doha, Qatar, saying that either American “will leave of their own accord, or they will be forced out.”

Mr Stanekzai made these remarks just two days before he led a Taliban team into fresh talks with US interlocutors. Pro-Taliban social media outlets on Friday released video of Mr Stanekzai’s speech, one day after the US special reconciliation envoy Zalmay Khalilzad wrapped up the week-long negotiations with Taliban representatives in Doha.

Mr Stanekzai can be heard praising the bravery of the Afghan nation for defeating past British and Soviet invasions of their country and resisting the current foreign military presence.

God has helped us defeat two superpowers in the last century. The third super power that we are currently confronted with is also on the verge of defeat,” he said.

Last week, Ambassador Khalilzad claimed in a tweet his talks with the Taliban were making “steady but slow progress on aspects of the framework for ending the Afghan war.”

However, the current pace of talks was not sufficient “when so much conflict rages and innocent people die,” he added. (with inputs from Dawn)

RSS has dumped Modi, Sangh unhappy with him: Mayawati

0

Chief of Bahujan Samaj Party  Mayawati on Tuesday claimed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had abandoned Narendra Modi and this was proof that he has failed as a Prime Minister.

The former chief minister of UP claimed that RSS workers were not campaigning for the BJP in this election, “You will not find them this time, perhaps because the Sangh is unhappy with Modi’s false promises that have created huge resentment among the masses,” She was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

Mayawati demanded that the Election Commission ban politicians from visiting temples between campaigns.

“Worshiping in temples is in fashion in this election in which leaders are spending huge money. The EC should ban temple hopping by leaders as it is a violation of the model code of conduct,” she said.

The model code bans appeals for votes in the name of religion and says mosques, churches, temples or other places of worship “shall not be used as forum for election propaganda” but there is no prohibition on visits by leaders to religious places.

For the record, it is mostly BJP and Congress leaders who have been visiting one temple or the other every day in between campaigns.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has visited more temples than others. Barred from campaigning for three days last month following provocative speeches, Adityanath had visited half-a-dozen temples during that time and the media had been asked to publicise the trips..

“Modi ki naiya doob rahi hai (Modi’s ship is sinking),” Mayawati said, predicting Modi’s defeat on May 23, when the Lok Sabha election results are scheduled to be declared.

On Monday, Mayawati had dubbed the Prime Minister a “wife deserter” and appealed to the women of the country not to elect “such a person” as Prime Minister.

Gayle chooses yoga over gym, hopes to carry form into final World Cup

0

New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) Chris Gayle, who heads into his fifth and final World Cup, has devised his own method of staying fit at 39, a routine that has kept the ‘Universe Boss’ away from the gym for the last two months.

His fitness formula includes extensive yoga and massage sessions which help him recover after a long day on the field. Being naturally strong allows him to avoid gym and “a lot rest” in between games is also helping him stay in good shape.

All of that seems to be working wonders for the Jamaican who goes into the World Cup in menacing form, having scored 490 runs in the just concluded IPL at 40.83.

“It is a funny game you know. When the World Cup comes, hopefully, the runs would flow. I have a lot of experience so I know what it is like. I am just happy with the way I am batting right now and hope to carry on,” Gayle told PTI in an interview.

He may seem superhuman while hitting those massive sixes (he hit 39 of them in the four ODIs against England and 34 in the IPL) but there is a method to that madness. Age does catch up, he said, but “if you actually think you can do it, the body will react accordingly”.

“Age catches up as you ain’t getting any younger. But most important thing for me is the mental part of the game. It is not so much for about the physical side of the game anymore. I have not done much fitness in the last couple of months.

“I use my experience and mental aspect. I have not done gym for some time. Like I said I am just taking a lot of rest, getting a lot of massage, lots of stretching, just trying to stay fresh for games. I know what is required to keep me going on the field,” said the maker of 10151 ODI runs.

He was sensational in his last ODI series, smashing 424 runs in four innings at a staggering average of 106 against a top side like England, including two hundreds and as many half centuries.

What may work for someone like a Virat Kohli, may not work for others.

“You have to stick to your own formula,” he said.

The person that he is, Gayle would love a fairy tale finish at the World Cup and expects the youngsters to win it for him.

Having played 103 Tests, 289 ODIs and bossing T20 leagues around the world, Gayle said there is nothing left for him to prove and he is playing only for his legions of fans.

“Honestly (I do it for) the fans, I am not going to lie. May be couple of years ago the thought did cross (that I have had enough and what is there to prove). Then the fans came out and said ‘don’t go’. They actually drive me to go on.

“I know nothing lasts forever and and hopefully I can give them a few more games and it also pushes you to win the World Cup.”

For someone who made his West Indies debut in 1999, Gayle said he never expected himself to have such a long career.

“Never really considered thinking about it but time does fly quickly. I could never dream of playing so many World Cups but it has happened. It shows consistency in the career. That keeps you going and earn a lot of praise.

“Hard work in the last couple of has years paid off. People want to see you more and you are trying to deliver as much as possible.”

Gayle is also someone who has seen the lowest point of West Indies cricket and his stand-offs with the region’s governing body are well-documented. But the recent Test series win against England at home has raised hopes of a long awaited revival.

“We have seen changes (in cricket board) in the last couple of months. Hopefully the new team gets it right, gets the structure in place. Cricket is the most important thing for the Caribbean. Hope they take the game to where it is supposed to be.

“It will take time of course. Lot of things need to be rebuilt. On the field, we had a good series against England, now the World Cup is coming up and that is another opportunity for us to turn things around,” signed off Gayle.

Geelani hails release of political prisoners by India-Pakistan

0

Srinagar, May 15 : Hailing the good-will gestures by both India and Pakistan to release the destitute prisoners from their respective jails, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani said that the mutual well wishing in the month of Holy Ramadan should be a permanent feature of the bilateral relations of both the countries.

He expressed his high hope that as the important parties to the Kashmir dispute both countries should use this well wishing attitude, in the first instance, to release all the prisoners belonging to Jammu and Kashmir, languishing in Indian jails.

In a statement issued, lamenting on the plight of Kashmiri prisoners at the hands of barbaric jail authorities in and outside Jammu and Kashmir, Hurriyat (G) chairman reiterated his stand that Kashmir is a pure political and humanitarian problem which is in dire need of an early resolution for the prosperous South Asia so instantly, the mutual well wishing gesture to release all the prisoners must include those Kashmiri prisoners languishing in the state and outside in Indian jails.

Taking a dig on the reluctance of India, not to allow the International Red Cross, Amnesty International or other human rights organizations to visit these jails and observe their pathetic condition, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman said that the illogical denial by India speaks volumes about the plight of Kashmiri prisoners.

Citing the delaying tactics to prolong the detention of such prisoners, by the Indian judiciary which tantamount to the brazen denial of justice, the veteran pro-freedom leader said that those incarcerated on fabricated and flimsy grounds face the hardships of unfair-trail in the respective courts of Law. Without any hearing on the fixed dates, new dates at long intervals are fixed to add ordeal to the accused prisoners. There are hundreds of instances where, bail, detenue’s basic right is also denied for years together. Life imprisonment on the basis of political vendetta has become a routine matter in Jammu and Kashmir.

Making a fervent appeal to both the countries, especially India to shun its stubbornness, Hurriyat (G) chairman said that let the two nuclear neighbours of South Asia turn a new leaf in their bilateral relations to sit together along with the people of Kashmir and resolve of Kashmir issue peacefully in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of the Jammu and Kashmir.

Despite Guv’s directions, authorities yet to repair city roads

0

Ishtyaq Ahmad

Srinagar, May 15 : Though the Governor Satya Paul Malik on the eve of opening of bi-annual Darbar Move here had expressed his concerns over the dilapidated roads and had directed the concerned to ensure immediate repair work of roads, but there seems to be no progress on the ground as commuters continue to suffer on the Srinagar roads that have developed cracks and potholes and are in shambles.

The R&B chief engineer in March had also maintained that all the roads that have developed cracks, or potholes will be repaired on fast track basis before the annual Darbar Move shifts to Srinagar from Jammu.

However all claims proved false and fake as witnesses reveal that special focus has been given to the particular road stretch in the city, but no other roads in the city have been repaired.

The commuters said that the Roads and Building department is not coming up to the peoples’ expectations of repairing the roads damaged due to the winter rain and snow.

According to locals, the road stretch from Qamarwari to Bemina to Batamaloo has major potholes and no repair work has been taken on the road so far by the R&B. Similarly, complaints of dilapidated roads continue to pour in from the residents of Srinagar Airport Road, Rangreth, Rawalpora, Norbagh, Khayniyar Sanatnagar, Mehjoor Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Nawgam, Batmaloo and other areas.

The people here told that though they visited the office of the district administration and Chief engineer Roads and buildings many times with the request for repairing the broken roads, but their requests have fallen on deaf ears.

The road from Qamarwari, Noorbagh to Dalgate is in a bad shape causing inconvenience to commuters, especially students and office-goers.

“Nobody from the administration bothers to take steps to make the bumpy roads functional for the smooth traffic,” said a government employee.

“A distance which should be travelled in less than 40 minutes takes more than an hour because of the potholed roads of the city,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, an auto rickshaw driver.

Road from Qamarwari leading towards Valley’s lone tertiary care hospital, SKIMS Soura is in shambles. This poses risk to lives of patients who are referred there from other hospitals,” said Mohmmad ismaila, a resident of Safakadal.

Taking the cognizance of the bad situation of the roads in the district, the Srinagar district administration in an order issued to R&B Department on April 10 sort details about officials and contractors for criminal proceedings. Even former chief minister Omar Abdullah has expressed concern over bad condition of roads.

Meanwhile most of the roads in Shaher-e-Khaas are dilapidated.

The roads in rural areas are also in mess. Reports said that the roads in north and south Kashmir are in shabby condition, and travelling is proving to be back breaking experience.

The angry commuters here also accused Roads and Buildings (R&B) department of having failed to carry out necessary repairs of the roads.

“What is the fun of macadamising when it (macadam) doesn’t last long? The authorities should take into account the hardships suffered by the commuters,” they said.

The experts believe that lack of planning, poor quality control and drainage system are the primary causes for the poor condition of roads in the city.

They said that that poor drainage leads to accumulation of water on the roads that eventually washes off a patch or leaves the roads with potholes.

People said that the old Srinagar-Jammu highway is in a sorry state of affairs as no repair work has been started by the authorities so far with the result the frequent travelers on the road from Pampore to Pantha Chowk to and fro face immense problems while as many travelers alleged that their vehicles got damaged due to the bad condition of road from Pampore to Panthachowk.

“Ever since the new express highway from Lasjan to Galander was thrown open, the old high-way has been throw to the winds as neither national highway’s authority nor the R&B takes the responsibility of its repair,” said Abid Rashid, who travels regularly on road twice a day,” he said. (KNS)
