Nearly 300 Polling Booths Draw Zero Votes In Two South Kashmir Districts

Srinagar, May 6 : As many as 299 polling booths in Pulwama and Shopian district saw no voting in Monday’s elections to the Anantnag Parliamentary seat, sources said. There were 695 polling booths set up in the twin districts spread over six assembly segments of Pampore, Tral, Pulwama, and Rajpora in Pulwama and two in Shopian—Shopian and Wachi.

Sources said 266 polling booths in Pulwama district and 37 in Shopian—28 in Shopian assembly segment and 9 in Wachi witnessed zero votings.

Sources said that nine polling booths saw less than seven votes cast in Wachi and 14 booths were such were less than five votes were polled in Shopian, they said. Thin attendance of voters was also witnessed elsewhere in the two districts and there was only a few places where people could be seen lined up in queues waiting for their turn to cast votes.

Officials at several polling stations were idling around, while government forces maintained a vigil against possible disruption by miscreants.

Reports said deserted roads were leading to polling stations with no or a few voters and the overbearing presence of government forces were dominant scenes in the twin districts with Pulwama witnessing little more than two percent voting while polling percentage remained below 3 percent in Shopian district in the last of the three-phased elections for parliamentary Anantnag seat.

As per officials, 2.14 percent voting was recorded in Pulwama and at the same time, Shopioan district, spread over two assembly segments, saw 2.88%.

Pulwama district had 351,314 electors including 181,259 males, 169,508 females, 541 service electors (533 male and eight female) and six transgender voters. 450 polling stations were set up across the district.

Similarly, Shopian district has 171,216 electors including 89,868 males, 81,227 females, 116 service electors (113 male and three female) and five transgender voters. The EC had set up 245 polling stations across the district.

The candidates in the fray were Hasnain Masoodi of Jammu Kashmir National Conference, Sofi Yousuf of BJP, Ghulam Ahmad Mir of Congress, Mehbooba Mufti of Jammu Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party, Nisar Ahmad Wani of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party, Choudhary Zaffar Ali of Jammu Kashmir People’s Conference, Sanjay Kumar Dhar of Manav Adhikar Party, Surinder Singh of Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) and Independents Imtiyaz Ahmad Rather, Ridwana Sanam, Riyaz Ahmad Bhat, Zubair Masoodi, Shams Khwaja, Ali Mohammad Wani, Ghulam Mohammad Wani, Kyasir Ahmed Sheikh, Manzoor Ahmad Khan and Mirza Sajad Hussain Beigh.

NIA Files Charge Sheet against accused in Grenade attack on police station Jalandhar

Says AGH carried out attack, six Kashmiris were involved, 3 of whom killed in gunfight

Srinagar, May 06 : The​ NIA, today filed a Charge Sheet in Case no. RC-39/2018/NIA/DLI which relates to 4 Hand Grenade explosions that took place on 14th September 2018 in the premises of Police Station Maqsudan, Jalandhar. In this attack, one police personnel had received splinter injuries in his chest. Initially, a case FIR No. 163/2018 dated 15-09-2018 was registered by Punjab Police at PS Division-1, Jalandhar, Punjab. The case was subsequently taken up by NIA for investigation.

The statement issued her said that that during investigation, accused Fazil Bashir Pinchoo r/o Ghat Mohalla, PS Awantipora and Shahid Quyoom r/o Kanjinag, PS Awantipora were arrested on 8.11.2018. Investigation revealed that on 14th Sept 2018, above accused persons along with Rouf Ahmed Mir r/o Mirpora Mohalla, Dadasara, Tehsil Tral, PS Awantipora, Distt Pulwama and Ummer Ramzan @ Gazi r/o vill.

Dadasara, PS Awantipora, Pulwama, J&K had carried out the grenade attacks at the premises of the PS Maqsudan, Jalandhar, Punjab in furtherance of conspiracy to destabilise the law and order situation in Punjab and to wage war against India. While Fazil Bashir Pinchoo and Shahid Quyoom were studying at St. Soldiers Institute, Jalandhar, Punjab, Rouf Ahmed Mir and Ummer Ramzan@ Gazi had travelled from Awantipora to Jalandhar on 13.09.2018 to take part in the attack on PS Maqsudan.

Investigation further revealed that Fazil Bashir Pinchoo, Shahid Quyoom, Rouf Ahmed Mir, and Ummer Ramzan @ Gazi had targeted PS Maqsudan, Jalandhar in association with Amir Nazir Mir and Rasik Ahmed Mir, both residents of village Dadsara, PS Awantipora, Pulwama under a conspiracy hatched by Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGH) led by its self-styled chief Zakir Rashid Bhat @ Zakir Musa to target security installations throughout the country. All the above accused persons are cadres of Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGH), a Kashmir based terrorist outfit with a Pan-Islamic ideology.

As a part of this conspiracy, Fazil Bashir and Shahid Quyoom had collected 4 hand grenades from an unknown cadre of AGH near Verka Plant, Jalandhar on 9 Sep, 2018. Thereafter, on 13 Sep 2018, Rauf Ahmed Mir and Ummer Ramzan@ Gazi travelled from Kashmir to Chandigarh on an Indigo Flight and thereon to Jalandhar by road. Recce of potential targets was conducted on 13th Sep itself and after selecting PS Maqsudan’s building as target, the attack was executed around 1945 hrs on 14 Sep, 2018. After the attack, all the four left for Kashmir in different batches.

Three accused viz. Rouf Ahmed Mir, Ummer Ramzan and Rasik Ahmed Mir were killed during an encounter that took place between the AGH cadres and security forces on 22nd Dec 2018 at vill. Arampora, Awantipora, Pulwama, J&K.

Charge-Sheet has been filed in the Special NIA Court, Mohali, Punjab against (i) Fazil Bashir Pinchoo and (ii) Sahid Quyoom u/s 120B, 121, 121A, 122, 307 of IPC, Sec.16, 18, 20, 23 of UAPA & Section 3 of Explosive Substances Act. ​Further investigation continues in respect of the other accused persons including AGH Chief Zakir Musa.

BSF Sub-Inspector Injured In Pakistani Shelling In Mankote Sector

Poonch, May 6 : An officer of Border Security Force (BSF) was injured on Monday in Pakistani shelling in Mankote sector of Poonch district.

Official sources told GNS that the BSF officer Sub-Inspector Gokul Anand Ojha of 168 bn received splinter injuries at Neelam Post along the LoC in Mankote sector today in the afternoon after Pakistani army targeted Indian posts.

SDPO Mendhar Neeraj Padiyar while confirming it said that the injured BSF officer was taken to a military hospital for treatment.

He said that the condition of the injured officer is said to be stable.

Earlier today, the armies of India and Pakistan exchanged shelling in Krishna Ghati sector. (GNS)

Two more polling stations targeted in Pulwama

Srinagar, May 06: Suspected militants on Monday attacked another polling station with a bomb in Pulwama district in South Kashmir.

Reports reaching GNS said that unknown persons hurled the bomb on a polling booth stationed inside Goverment Higher secondary school Chatpora this afternoon.

The device exploded outside the wall of school. However there was no injury reported in the blast.

An official confirmed to GNS and said that hunt has been launched to nab persons involved in the attack.

Meanwhile suspected militants lobbed a grenade on a polling booth Tikan village in the southern district however the device didn’t explode. Police and bomb disposal squad immediately rushed to the spot and the device is being destroyed.(GNS)

Altaf Bukhari grieved over death of Natipora labourer in flyover accident

SRINAGAR, May 6:  Former finance minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Monday expressed deep shock and grief over the death of a labourer Mohammad Amin Bhat in tragic accident at Rambagh-Solina flyover that took place on Sunday evening.  

In a statement issued here, Bukhari demanded severe punishment warranted under law for the guilty who hit the car while plying on wrong side of the flyover. “This tragic accident has resulted due to clear violation of traffic rules and the authorities must book the culprit and take the case to its logical conclusion in a time bound manner,” the former minister demanded.

In his condolence message, Bukhari conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family of deceased labourer who was a resident of Azad Basti Natipora of Amirakadal constituency and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul. He wished speedy recovery to person who sustained grievous injuries in the accident.

The former finance minister said the increasing road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir have assumed alarming proportions. Bukhari remarked that it has been found that the drivers are not following set standard rules and safety instructions while plying on the Rambagh-Solina flyover.

“The administration must come out with some tangible measures to prevent such heart wrenching mishaps in future,” Bukhari urged, further urging the traffic department to deploy special squads on both sides of the flyover to prevent loss of life.

            “My heart goes out for the family of deceased labourer who has left behind his three children including a specially-able child and wife. The deceased was living a life of penury so the administration must come forward to help his family by disbursing ex-gratia relief at an earliest.” He also wished speedy recovery for the injured and urged the district administration to provide best medical treatment to him.

Employees Boycott Darbar Opening Ceremony To Protest Non-Fulfillment Of Their Demands

Civil Secretariat employees on the first day of Darbar move here boycotted the reopening ceremony as a mark of protest against the non-fulfillment of their long pending demands.

Reports reaching GNS said that the employees of the Civil Secretariat here in Srinagar boycotted the reopening ceremony and were seen wearing black bands and black dresses.

Vice Chairman of the J&K Civil Secretariat Employees Coordination Committee (J&KCSCC) Maqbool Hussain told GNS that this was the first time in the history that the employees boycotted the opening ceremony.

“We boycotted the reopening of Darbar as a mark of protest to press the government for resolving their long pending demands,” Hussain said.

Suresh Bedi vice president of Civil Secretariat Employees Association, one of the four associations of J&KCSCC, told GNS that this is for the first time that employees boycotted the opening ceremony. “The other three associations include J&K Civil Secretariat Lower Grade employees Union, J&K Non-Gazetted Economics and Statistics Employees Union and J&K Legislative Assembly Employees Union”.

In all previous opening ceremonies, the employees’ leaders were welcoming the heads of the state, Chief Secretary and other state heads with flower bouquets but this time not a single employee attended the ceremony, Bedi said.

The employees straightway went inside the Secretariat premises and attended the offices. Most of the employees headed by the coordination committee were seen wearing black bands and black dresses, he added. (GNS)

Mehbooba Mufti visits Makhdoom sahab (RA) Shrine in downtown, prays for peace

SRINAGAR, MAY 06 : PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti visited the revered shrine of Hazrat Sheikh Hamza (RA) alias Makhdoom Sahab in Rainawari area of downtown early morning today.

Sources told that Mehbooba drove to the shrine to seek saints blessing and to pray for Kashmir peace.

“She spent 15 minutes at the shrine and then left,” sources said.

Grenade lobbed on polling station in Pulwama village

Srinagar, May 06: Suspected militants on Monday morning hurled a grenade towards a polling station in Rahmoo village of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Reports reaching GNS said that the unknown persons lobbed grenade on the polling booth stationed inside goverment middle school Rahmoo. However in the blast there were no injuries reported.

A police officer told GNS that a blast like sound was heard near polling both.

Voting begins in J&K’s two Lok Sabha seats

Polling began on Monday for Ladakh and Anantnag Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir. Enthusiastic voters started pouring out to throng the polling stations in Leh and Kargil districts.

In contrast, most of the polling stations wore a deserted look in Shopian and Pulwama districts where polling is being held in the third and final phase of Anantnag Lok Sabha seat.

Polling started at 7 a.m. in both the Lok Sabha seats, but it will end at 4 p.m. in Anantnag constituency and 6 p.m. in Ladakh constituency.

In the hilly Shahdab Karewa village of Shopian district, voters started to come out in good numbers to exercise their democratic rights.

In Ladakh, the contest is four-cornered between Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rigzin Spalbar of the Congress and two independents, Haji Asgar Ali Karbalai and Sajjad Hussain.

There are 18 candidates in fray in Anantnag, but the main contest is between Mehbooba Mufti of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ghulam Ahmad Mir of Congress and Justice (retired) Hasnain Masoodi of the National Conference.

The votes will be counted on May 23.(IANS)

Forces launch nocturnal CASO in Baramulla village

Baramulla, May 06 : Government forces on Sunday night launched a cordon-and-search operation in north Kashmir’s Baramulla village.

Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said that a joint team of army’s 52 RR, 176 bn CRPF, and SOG Kreeri laid a siege at Ganai Mohalla of Pochnag village in Baramulla this night.

Meanwhile police sources also confirmed this cordon and search operation to Kashmir Despatch and said that the cordon was launched following inputs about the movement of some suspected militants.

The searches in the area was on when filled this report.
