Day 4: Shooting stones affect traffic movement

0

The traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was affected for the fourth consecutive day Saturday due to intermittent shooting of stones from a hillock.

No fresh vehicular traffic was allowed on the 270-km Highway, either from Jammu or Srinagar, over the past three days owing to multiple landslides and shooting of stones at several places, including Anokhi fall, Battery Cheshma and MokeyMorh in Ramban district, officials said.

Though road clearance agency had removed the debris from the road, the authorities decided against allowing fresh traffic on the Highway on Thursday to facilitate over 2,500 stranded vehicles, the officials said.

However, a massive landslide again hit the road on Thursday-Friday night at Monkey Morh, once again halting the movement of the traffic.

The traffic was allowed to move on Friday morning but continuous shooting of stones hampered the smooth movement of vehicles, they said.

“The road is open, but the traffic is moving at a slow pace due to intermittent shooting of stones at Monkey Morh. We are hopeful of clearing the remaining 600 stranded vehicles, mostly trucks, by this evening,” Senior Superintendent of Police, National Highway, Jatinder Singh Johar told PTI.

He said since there will be convoy movement on Sunday, no civilian vehicle will be allowed from either Jammu or Srinagar.

Jet Airways employees seek Prez’s intervention for salary dues, emergency funds to airline

0

New Delhi,  (PTI) Employees of Jet Airways have written to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking their intervention to recover outstanding dues as well as to expedite the process of emergency funds for the airline, which has shuttered its operations temporarily.

Cash-starved Jet Airways, which has around 23,000 employees, has delayed payment of salaries to the employees, including pilots.

Amid uncertainty over the future course of the carrier, two employees’ unions have now written to the President and the Prime Minister.

In separate but similarly-worded letters this week, the Society for Welfare of Indian Pilots (SWIP) and Jet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Welfare Association (JAMEWA) have requested help in clearing their outstanding salary dues.

“We request you to consider the situation with the urgency it deserves and direct the management of Jet Airways (India) Ltd to expeditiously disburse all outstanding dues to affected employees.

“We also urge you to expedite the process of emergency funding, as every minute and every decision is very critical in these testing times,” one of the letters said.

After months of uncertainty, Jet Airways announced temporary suspension of its operations on April 17 as it failed to receive emergency funds from lenders.

The unions highlighted that a section of employees have not been paid their salaries on time for the last seven months and that the distressing situation was also brought to the notice of the Ministry of Labour and Employment in March.

“The management of Jet Airways has gone back on its salary arrears payment schedule conveyed by mail dated December 7, 2018. The outstanding amount for pilots and engineers as of now is three months salary (full salaries for the months of January, February and March), and for all other staff is one month’s salary,” the letter said.

Noting that employees did their best to keep up the highest standards of safety and professionalism in these trying times, the grouping said non-payment of salaries is causing extreme hardships to employees.

“… even after all our efforts, we are not seeing any ray of hope and so it is our humble plea to take this matter under your guidance for an immediate action for the revival of the entire system,” the letter said.

SWIP has around 1,200 members while JAMEWA represents more than 500 employees.

“We have also realised that along with our Jet Airways sinking, we are not only 23,000 employees who will be affected directly but a number of people who are running business or are associated with us some way or the other.

“Even the shops at the airports are facing a lull. Such a big airline going down will leave a huge vacuum behind. Passengers are already facing the brunt of it,” they said.

The unions also flagged that air ticket prices are “sky rocketing”.

A day after the airline suspended operations, hundreds of employees had gathered in the national capital seeking measures to revive the carrier, which has been in operation for nearly 26 years.

Domestic lenders have invited bids for selling stake in Jet Airways. On April 18, the lenders said they were “reasonably hopeful” that the bidding process for the airline would end successfully.

Have taken up matter with MHRD, hopeful of ‘sympathetic’ view: Advisor

Nadeem Nadu

Srinagar, April 20 : With fear of recent thrashing and harassment to the Kashmiris lurking in their minds, students and their parents urged governor administration to take up the issue with the government of India and ensure centres for NEET examination are set up in Kashmir Valley.

Owais Aziz Wani, a resident of Muqami-e-Shahwali Kupwara, said that his centre is in Chandigarh and his precious time would be lost in travelling, finding accommodation and “there is mind disturbance due to recent happening”. He was alluding to recent harassment of Kashmiri student outside the Valley.

“We have to arrange air ticket for him, manage accommodation, etc for him. While we will arrange the ticket etc but there is fear of harassment and if any untoward happens to him, we cannot bear it and the government should realize how difficult it would be for him and other Kashmiri students to write the exam,” Owais’s father told GNS.

“Traveling outside Kashmir proves cumbersome and it all gets messed up which distracts students’ minds especially during last days of preparations. While we pay Rs 1500 as exam fee but we have to bear additional expenses around Rs 15000 for travelling by air and for accommodation,” Rashid Ahmad, a student from Srinagar said, adding, “Srinagar-Jammu highway condition is such that no student can risk travelling on it.”

The students appealed to the governor administration to take up the matter with the National Testing Agency (NTA) which is the exam conducting body for NEET and other national level competitive exams and seek allotment of centres for Valley to avoid their traveling outside to appear in the exams scheduled next month.

“The recent beating of students is still fresh in our minds and we are unable to concentrate on our studies. The situation is still not that good and there is no surety that the incidents of harassment are not repeated,” Basit Ahmad, a student from Budgam area said. “Even if nothing untoward happens with any student, the fear remains there.  In recent GATE examination, hundreds of aspirants from the Valley missed the exams as they failed to reach examination venues in stipulated time due to various reasons.”

When contacted Advisor to Governor, Khurshid Ganai told GNS that he and K.K. Sharma, another advisor to Governor have taken up with the MHRD the matter of shifting the NEET exam centers for the maximum number of examinees from the Valley from outside the state to Srinagar and that the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has been asked to provide the requisite assistance in arranging more centers. “It is hoped that the concerned authorities in New Delhi responsible for the conduct of exam will take a sympathetic view,” Ganai said.
