Virat Kohli achieves double honour as Wisden 2019 is published

0

Virat Kohli’s reputation as the outstanding cricketer of his generation has been further enhanced by a brace of accolades in the 2019 edition of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, which is published today.

Kohli, who will lead India’s World Cup campaign in England later this year, has been named as the Leading Cricketer in the World for an unprecedented third year in a row.

He has also achieved one of the few accolades to have eluded him in his career so far, by being named as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year, the oldest individual award in the sport.

Jos Buttler and Sam Curran were also named among the five cricketers, following their key roles in England’s summer campaigns, alongside Rory Burns, Surrey’s championship-winning captain, and Tammy Beaumont, the outstanding player in another successful year for England’s women.

Kohli’s fellow Indian, Smriti Mandhana, is the Leading Cricketer in the women’s game, after racking up 1291 runs across limited-overs formats, including 13 half-centuries, while Rashid Khan, the Afghanistan legspinner, is the Leading Twenty20 Cricketer for the second year in a row.

Kohli, however, was the sport’s dominant figure in 2018, making 2735 international runs at 68.37 across all formats, more than 700 more than his nearest challenger, England’s Joe Root.

In that time, he scored a remarkable 11 centuries in 37 innings, seven of which came on India’s tours of South Africa, England and Australia, traditionally three of toughest venues for overseas batsmen.

His form on the Test tour of England was particularly outstanding – although India slipped to a 4-1 series defeat, Kohli himself made 593 runs in the five Tests at 59.30, including hundreds at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge.

And, as a consequence of making such a big impact on the English season, he was finally named as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year, an honour that dates back to 1889.

Wisden states that “excellence in, or influence on, the previous English summer are the major criteria for inclusion as a Cricketer of the Year”, and seeing as Kohli had managed just 134 runs at 13.40 on his previous Test tour in 2014, this was his first real opportunity to claim an exclusive honour that – unlike the Leading Cricketer award – can only be achieved once in any player’s career.

“Despite finishing on the losing side, India captain Virat Kohli shone with the bat, laying to rest his struggles in England in 2014,” said Wisden’s editor, Lawrence Booth.

“His Test batting, especially in England, was magnificent, while his 50-over form moved to a new level – if that was possible.”

Elsewhere in the 2019 Wisden, the Almanack’s 156th edition, Booth reflects on another eventful year for the sport, which included the fall-out from Australia’s ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town , and the retirement of England’s leading Test run-scorer, Alastair Cook, who features on the front cover alongside England’s leading wicket-taker, James Anderson.

“There was more to him than met the eye,” Booth wrote in his Notes By the Editor. “Sluggish between the wickets, he was fitter than anyone. Possessing only three strokes against the seamers – the cut and the pull grew scarce as bowlers cottoned on, leaving the nudge off the hip – he made more Test runs than any other left-hander or opener.

“And he took his only Test wicket while impersonating Bob Willis. When Radio 4’s “World At One” cut to a clip of Cook “doing what he did best”, that wicket is what they came up with, as if his 12,472 runs had passed them by.

“But in one respect Cook was no paradox: for mental strength, England has never seen anyone like him. Even his parting shot – 71 and 147 against the world’s No.1 side [India] – required him to rediscover the edge he said had deserted him. We shouldn’t have been surprised.”

In Cook’s absence, Booth is pessimistic about the prospects of England’s Test team uncovering another top-order batsman to replace his grit and resolve – not least given the advent in 2020 of the ECB’s new competition, The Hundred, a format about which he is scathing.

“Quite what a 100-ball tournament will do to England’s search for a Test top order does not bear thinking about,” he wrote. “If only someone at the ECB had been on hand last year to explain why they thought it a good idea to stake cricket’s wellbeing on a form of the game played nowhere else in the world.”

“England’s openers were once the envy of the world; gutsy, stoical, pragmatic, they may even have embodied a certain Britishness. Now, it’s a pleasant surprise when one survives until lunch.”

“It is not easy to see what can be done while the domestic schedule treats four-day cricket as an inconvenience … unless the Championship can reclaim the turf of high summer, the flow of hopeful young openers will slow to a trickle.”

Those encouraging people to defy Highway ban, should leave their PSOs, Govt vehicles: Shah Faesal

0

Srinagar, Apr 10 : Without naming anyone, IAS turned politician Shah Faesal said that those encouraging people to defy Highway ban, should leave their PSOs, Government vehicles at home and then cross the concertina wire.

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement (JKPM) chairman Shah Faesal said in a Facebook post, “On defying the highway traffic ban by holding symbolic protests we have a slightly different take.”

“We planned a protest at least three times but I couldn’t convince myself to do it,” he said.

Faesal said, “Protesting with PSOs and government vehicles behind us, and yelling at the local traffic-cops without looking at the center-backed, uncaring soldier, I thought it would be a gimmick. My heart didn’t allow me to try the old deception.”

He said that we don’t believe in gimmickry.

“So we decided to approach the Court and will fight it out at many levels, official and unofficial,” JKPM chairman said.

“Those who are encouraging civilians to defy the ban should first leave their PSOs and bullet-proof vehicles at home and then cross the concertina wire,” he added.

Faesal said that people have become smart now. Kashmir can’t be fooled anymore,” he said.

SUHAIL RATHER

Bandipora, 10 April: The 86-km-long Bandipora-Gurez road was thrown open for traffic (4×4) vehicles after remaining closed due to heavy snowfall at Razdan pass.

Beacon authorities have opened the Gurez-Bandipora road for four-by-four vehicles by clearing snow which had accumulated during the winter, Officer Commnading APS Khaira said on Wednesday.

He said that the snow clearance teams of 56RCC/BEACON have connected Gurez with mainland Kashmir by completing the snow clearance for one way movement of vehicles.

“This is for the first time that despite record high snowfall in this winter the Bandipora-Gurez road has been thrown open in second week of April itself. It is a great achievement for us,” Lt Col APS Khaira, Oc 56 RCC added.

“We worked day and night in extreme weather conditions to achieve this landmark for earliest ever opening of Razdhan Pass. This has not only facilitated the conduct of General elections in Gurez and Tulail valleys but also helped the stranded local populace by connecting them with mainland,” he said.

Gurez-Bandipora road remains closed for four months due to heavy snowfall in winter.

Dialogue only way to resolve K-issue: Farooq Abdullah

0

Srinagar, Apr 10,: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday asserted that dialogue between India and Pakistan is the only way to resolve the protracted issue of J&K.

Addressing a public gathering at Palpura, Idgha Party president Dr Farooq Abdullah said that the issue of Jammu and Kashmir is not a consequence of lack of development rather the issue is political in nature. “The issue has held hostage the development of the sub-continent. Our party has all along maintained that the dialogue between the two nations affords a way out,” he said.

Party president while appreciating the Pakistan PM Imran Khan for his statement wherein he has cast off the war as the option between India and Pakistan and impressed for dialogue to solve J&K said, “These words are coming from the PM of our neighbouring country, a former cricketer. However, on this side, our PM Modi is still speaking the language of a tea seller. National Conference too vouches for a time-bound result-oriented dialogue between India and Pakistan; we firmly believe the increased bonhomie between India and Pakistan will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity in our state and in the sub-continent in general.”

“The issue of J&K has been lingering since 1947, how long shall our people suffer? No sooner we impress for a political solution of our state, we are outrightly tainted as anti-national. This has to stop. The government has to see what holds good for the greater good of the country and the sub-continent at large. The BJP led government at centre is using Kashmir to leverage its poll prospects elsewhere in the country. The trend should stop as it can have serious ramifications for the country’s unity and integrity,” He said.

Dr Farooq in a stinging attack on PM Modi, said, “During its stint in power BJP headed by PM has led to the amplification of hate particularly against Muslims. This is not the idea of India which was visualized by the founders of a modern-day India nation-state; they visualized a secular progressive country shorn of all prejudices and hate. PM Modi has not a speck of affection for the minorities. The other day when a Hindu police officer lost his life while saving a Muslim man from the mob frenzy of communalists, PM Modi didn’t come up with a word of homage and accolade for the slain police officer. This people see with their own eyes? Now it is for us to decide if we allow such a person to continue to be in the vanguard of the new government after elections,” he said.

Dr Farooq while flaying PM Modi for squandering the precious mandate of people, said, “Wherever PM Modi goes he parrots Balakot Balakot! But when we seek an account of the work and development done by him, he paints us as anti-national. He has nothing to say on the achievements of his government, he is hiding his failures by masquerading behind Balakot Attack. His government wasn’t able to deliver on a single promise made by them in their election manifesto of 2014 general elections. People are asking where the jobs are. People are still waiting for 15 lakh Rupees to be deposited into their accounts. Every single edible has become dearer. The petrol, diesel prices are soaring high. The Modi led BJP led government is not leaving legacy but a caution for the times to come.”

“PM Modi has been flaunting the air strikes on Pakistan and bringing down of F16 Jets of Pakistan, however, the revelation coming from the USA does not attest to his claims. The USA has said that all the F16 jets of Pakistan are intact, therefore deflating the claims of Modi. It was the same USA that had come up with the satellite pics of Pak Army putting up in Mushko valley during the Kargil war. I myself saw that satellite pic. If the USA was right at that time why should its revelation be doubted at this juncture?”  he said, adding, “Having been failed to deliver on every front, on every promise, the PM has amplified the scope of his gimmickry and lying. However people have seen it all with their eyes, no theatrics, and deception can affect the people of the country,” he said.

Dr Farooq while flaying PM Modi for creating a humanitarian crisis in Kashmir by banning the civilian traffic on the national highway for two day a week, said, “The other day a family called on me and narrated the ordeal they had to go through in view of traffic ban. They couldn’t open the window panes of their car, they had to keep inside with their children causing an enormous nuisance to them. How can he think of winning the hearts of people by dolling out such repressive measures,” he said.

Party president said that he won’t allow anyone to touch our status. “I won’t allow anyone to fiddle with the Art370, Art 35 A. we are seeking the restoration of our relation with the union on the basis of Delhi agreement of 1953 and on the fundamentals of the accession. This demand of ours has been attested to by the former PM P V Narsima Rao, who in his televised interview in Burkina Faso had attested to the demand of restoring the status of our state. He had affirmed that when it comes to granting autonomy to the state, the sky is the limit,” he said.
