Dissent is essence of democracy, bans adding fuel to the fire: Madni

0

Srinagar, Mar 24 : Senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Sartaj Madni on Sunday accused Government of India of adding fuel to the fire and increasing alienation by imposing bans on religious and political organisations like Jamat-e-Islami and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).

Talking to news agency Madni said, “Though dissent is the essence of democracy but Government of India is adding fuel to the fire by banning religious and political organisations like Jamat-e-Islami and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). Banning political and religious activities would increase alienation brewing among the people while reconciliation of people is the mother of all conflicts in Jammu and Kashmir state.”

He asked the Government of India to take immediate measures for political reconciliation instead of taking provocative measures which would only deepen the alienation and henceforth the current crisis in Kashmir. (KNS)

The ban comes days after state’s largest religo-political party Jamaat-e-Islami was banned and its leadership arrested.

Reports said all the shops and business establishments remained shut across Kashmir including the summer capital Srinagar and passenger traffic was also off the roads.

Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq himself summoned by National Investigative Agency (NIA) to Delhi for questions in connection with a funding case was placed under house detention to prevent him from taking any protest rally. Train services from Banihal to Baramulla also remained suspended.

The shutdown call was issued by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik against the ban on JKLF.

JRL had said the government of India’s decision of banning the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front for five years is highly “authoritarian, autocratic and pure political vendetta.”

The central government banned the JKLF, headed by Muhammad Yasin Malik, on Friday labeling it an unlawful party.

Malik has also been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and lodged in a jail in Jammu division of the state. (KNS)

US to host Chinese trade delegation starting April 3

0

West Palm Beach (US), Mar 23 (AP) The US will host a delegation from China led by Vice Premier Liu He early next month, following a trip by US officials to China in an effort to improve trade relations, the White House said Saturday.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said President Donald Trump is sending US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to Beijing starting next week, joined by deputy US Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish and other senior Trump administration officials.

Vice Premier Liu He and other Chinese officials meet with officials in Washington starting April 3, Sanders said.

The trade dispute began last year after the US made several complaints, including that China was stealing US trade secrets and was forcing companies to give them technology to access its market.

Trump imposed tariffs on USD 250 billion of Chinese imports, about half what the United States buys from that country.

China retaliated with tariffs on about USD 110 billion of US items.

China’s commerce ministry had previously said Lighthizer and Mnuchin would be in China on Thursday and Friday for the eighth round of trade negotiations.

The scheduled talks suggest the two sides believe they can make at least some progress.

Trump said Thursday at the White House that, “Talks with China are going very well.”

Administration officials say they speak with their Chinese counterparts on a nearly daily basis.

Business lobbyists say that a key sticking point is what type of enforcement mechanism will be included in the agreement.

The Trump administration, they say, wants to have the option to impose tariffs on Chinese goods if China doesn’t abide by the terms of the pact.

The US also wants China to promise not to retaliate against those tariffs.

Still, business groups say the talks are making progress.

Strategic NC-Congress tie-up confined to LS polls only: Rana

0

JAMMU MARCH 24- National Conference Provincial President Mr Devender Singh Rana on Sunday described arrangement with the Congress for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections as a well thought out strategy to unitedly fight the divisive forces in the larger national interest.

“This arrangement is confined to Lok Sabha elections only as the nation is confronted with a huge challenge posed by those believing in divisive and hate politics”, Mr Rana said while welcoming youth into the party fold here this morning.

The youth joined in the National Conference in presence of the party District President Jammu-Urban Mr Dharamveer Singh Jamwal, Women Wing Provincial President Mrs Satwant Kour Dogra, Ex Corporator Mr Subash Bhgat and Corporators S Such Singh and Mr Ashok Singh were present

He said the country is passing through a difficult phase and it is incumbent upon the compatriots to save it from the elements inimical to its secular fabric and hell bent upon dividing the society on the basis of religion, race and caste. This is an unprecedented scenario, totally against the very idea of India, which assimilates diverse religions, castes, languages and races, he said, hoping that the people will see through the game-plan of polarizing the society for garnering votes.

“For defeating the dangerous narrative of hate and intolerance, all those believing in India’s diversity will have to come together and save democratic spirit of the country”, Mr Rana said adding that youth have to play a definite and decisive role in this regard. He urged the youth to become the catalyst of change by actively associating themselves in the process of isolating reactionary forces. He said the exploitative politics has impeded development and throttled the openings in jobs for the youth. The BJP’s promise of two crore jobs annually has not only emerged as a big hoax but also an insult to the youth who have been taken for a ride. The countrywide growing unemployment is reflective of the level of governance the nation has witnessed during the past five years, he said and sought a change in the scenario to have a responsive, accountable and effective government, which believes in deliverance rather than false slogans.

He exuded confidence that the people of Jammu, especially the youth will ensure the victory of the Congress candidates Mr Raman Bhalla and Mr Vikramaditya Singh respectively from Jammu-Poonch and Udhampur-Kathua parliamentary constituencies with huge margin.

The Provincial President lauded the yearning among youth for changing the political discourse from negativity to positivity, saying their choice for National Conference is a development in right direction. He said National Conference is the only and natural choice for public spirited youth who want to serve the society and steering it out of the environment of mistrust and fear.

“National Conference has all along provided a robust platform to youth to become the instrument of socio-political change”, Mr Rana said and hoped that the joining of devoted young people will take this public movement to its designated destination. He said the National Conference has a proven record of public service with emphasis on opportunities of progress to all, irrespective of caste, creed, colour or religion. He said the party has tirelessly worked for equitable development of all the three regions and their sub-regions during its different spells of governance.
