SRINAGAR, Mar 11: A day after election dates were announced , the political activities in J&K  have picked up momentum in J&K albeit  disappointment in political circles for delay in assembly polls. With first phase around the corner, the parties are huddling to finalise the list of candidates.

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is considering the names of former minister Ghulam Nabi Hanjura and a Shia leader for Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency while as the party is discussing the candidature of former Parliamentarian Dr. Mehboob Beigh and former minister Abdul Rehman Veeri for Anantnag Lok Sabha Constituency. The former trade union leader Ab.Qayoom Wani would be contesting from Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency.

Sources however, clarified that unlike 2016, the party is not fielding Mehbooba Mufti’s brother and former Cabinet Minister Tasaduq Mufti from Anantnag. PDP had nominated Tasaduq as Party Candidate for by-polls in South Kashmir, however, the polls could not be held due to law and order problem.

SRINAGAR, Mar 11: The J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) reviewed the Organizational affairs and activities in Kashmir valley in a meeting of Senior Party Functionaries.

The spokesman said that meeting also censured the Centre Govt for deferment of Assembly election in the State, describing this move as not in the benefit of democracy, saying that Centre has once again proved that it was interesting to give people an elected Govt thereby sacrificing their urges and aspirations in all the three regions.

The J&K PCC President G A Mir while reviewing the organizational affairs and activities in Kashmir valley held threadbare discussions with the Party leaders over the Lok Sabha Elections announced by the ECI a day before and emphasized the leaders to gear up for the challenges to defeat the designs of forces inimical to democracy and secularism.

JKPCC President also expressed serious concern over the decision of ECI not to simultaneous polls in the State, mentioning that Centre Govt led by Prime Minister Narinder Modi has certified that it has miserably failed to give people an elected Govt in J&K, besides failing to contain the situation in the valley, as a result, the polls were again deferred.

Mir also censured the Centre Govt for mishandling the situation in valley and the deferment of Assembly Elections is indicative of lack of interest to restore democratic set up on the part of Centre, he added and said that people of all the three regions were feeling disappointed over the decision of ECI, for the fact, the decision of ECI was detrimental to urges and aspirations of the people. They wanted to see the elected Govt at the earliest, he said.

‘Balakot strike was done to win LS elections’

KD NEWS SERVICE

SRINAGAR, Mar 11: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah Monday made serious allegations against the BJP-led Centre, saying it ordered the air strike in Pakistan’s Balakot with the “sole purpose” of winning Lok Sabha elections.

The Srinagar MP alleged the BJP has “failed” on all fronts and it was apprehended that there would be a fight or skirmish with Pakistan before the polls so that Prime Minister Narendra Modi becomes some kind of an “avatar” without whom India cannot survive.

“This surgical strike (air strike) was done only for the purpose of election…Totally for the election. We lost an aircraft worth crores of rupees. Be thankful that the IAF pilot (Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman) survived and returned from Pakistan with respect,” Abdullah told reporters here.

Abdullah said Monday, “In the Parliament, we knew they have failed on all other things and that there would be a fight or a skirmish with Pakistan in Kashmir so that he (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) becomes some kind of an ‘avatar’ without whom India cannot survive. But I want to tell him that whether he or I live or not, India will live and move forward”.

The NC president said an atmosphere of fear was being created to help the BJP in the polls. “They want to create an atmosphere of fear. There would be no war. The whole world is watching. This government is only using the senior officer for winning the election, the officer whom they got by superseding many others and who is now dancing to their tunes. Otherwise, there is no danger,” he said, without naming the “officer”.

“This atmosphere of fear that they have created in the country that without him anything will happen, I want to tell him that you were neither a God and never will be,” he said. Abdullah said there is no other way than to talk to Pakistan over the Kashmir issue. “They (New Delhi) have brought this (Kashmir) into international limelight.

Several countries are now involved in making India and Pakistan to talk over Kashmir and they will have to engage themselves as it is the only way forward,” he said. Asked about the Election Commission of India’s decision to delay the assembly polls in the state, Abdullah said he feared some “mischief” by the Centre in J-K.

“I think they must have thought of doing some mischief, that’s why they delayed the polls. I do not understand that when thousands of people took part in the Panchayat and municipal polls, what danger they think there is now when forces are present in larger number than they were. And they are present in every nook and corner of the state,” he said.

The NC president said all parties are in favour of holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls and now the public should understand what their motive is.

“If we unite, their designs will fail. We should prepare for that..For not giving a chance to the Centre for destruction. So, we all should stand to confront them…Where is the mighty government of India which cannot conduct an election here? If this is not surrender, what is,” he said. He said if the EC is saying that the environment is conducive for Lok Sabha polls, then why is it not conducive for the state polls. “Then they should not conduct the Parliament polls. I am surprised over what they are saying. They are contradicting themselves. It is unfortunate that our EC has become the election commission of the government.

A political EC. There is no independence. I hope there is a new government which gives full independence to the EC,” he said. Asked if his party was thinking of a pre-poll alliance with the Congress, Abdullah said, “We have not yet decided on that. We will see that”. He welcomed the ECI’s direction on keeping forces away from electioneering.

“It is good. I have seen in my state that soldiers press the button of machines in far-flung areas and I hope the forces are kept at bay this time and they will only be used for security purposes. This should be a free and fair election,” he said.

Indian Defence Lab Develops ‘Combat Medicines’ To Reduce Casualties In Pulwama Type Attacks

0

With 90 per cent of gravely wounded security personnel succumbing to injuries within a few hours, DRDO’s medical laboratory has come up with a range of ‘combat casualty drugs’ that can extend the golden hour till the trooper is shifted to hospital.

The spectrum includes bleeding wound sealants, super absorptive dressings and glycerated salines, all of which can save lives in the event of warfare in jungle and high altitude areas as well as in terror attacks, scientists said.

Citing the February 14 terror attack in Pulwama where 40 CRPF soldiers were killed, they said the medicines could have brought down the death toll.

According to developers of the drugs at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, chances of survival and minimum disability are highest when effective first aid care is given within the golden hour.

Scientists at INMAS, entrusted with research and development in a number of areas concerning the defence sector, said the main battlefield emergencies are excess bleeding, sepsis, shock, hypovolemia (decreased blood volume) and pain.
DRDO’s indigenously made medicines will be a boon for paramilitary and defence personnel during warfare, said A K Singh, director general of life sciences at the organisation.

These medicines will ensure that our brave soldiers do not suffer from unwanted blood loss while being taken to a better healthcare from war zones, he told PTI.

The challenges are many. There is only one medical person and limited equipment to take care of soldiers during combat in most cases. This is compounded by battlefield conditions such as forests, hilly terrain and inaccessibility of vehicles, experts said.

Among the drugs developed is glycerated saline, a battlefield intravenous fluid that does not freeze till -18 degrees Celsius and is useful in handling trauma cases in high altitude areas.
According to Manju Bala Popli, senior scientist at INMAS, glycerated saline, unlike normal saline, reduces inflammation. The drug can be life saving, particularly if the traumatic edema, collection of fluid in tissues and cavities of the body, is in the brain or lungs.
Glycerated saline has life saving capacities as it gives more time to the medical personnel to shift the wounded patient to a higher care facility, Popli said.
INMAS has also developed a special medicated dressing material which is 200 times more absorptive than normal dressings during bleeding wounds.

Amit Tyagi, another senior scientist at INMAS and part of the team behind developing the drug, said the cellulose fibre-based dressings are more effective in stopping bleeding and keeping the wound clean.

Additionally, antiseptics, antibiotics and curcumin can be impregnated in the dressing which acts as a slow drug release system, said a note prepared by INMAS on the medicines developed by it.

Normal cotton dressing used for bleeding wounds has sub optimal absorptive capacity and is soiled after sometime. In heavily bleeding wounds, putting a normal dressing can actually enhance the bleeding by sucking out the blood,” said INMAS scientist Gaurav Mittal.

“It is safer and more effective to put in a long stuffed absorptive strip rather than individual gauge pieces. It has four-five times higher capacity to absorb blood, he said.

Then there is Chitosan gel, which helps in preventing blood loss by forming a film over the wound. Coupled with platelets and red blood cells aggregation, it stops the bleeding. Its antibacterial and wound health properties are of added benefit.

Chitosan gel is suitable for sealing wounds by twin action: haemostasis by chemical action and filing action. It can be used for wounds on the limbs and also cavities such as abdomen and thorax, INMAS Director Tarun Sekhri told PTI.

The gel is poured onto the wound and held with physical pressure for few minutes till the bleeding stops, he said.
It is topped by Chitosan wound cover. If the wound is deep, filters like silk and cellulose granules may be used after Chitosan gel, he explained.

The products developed for jungle warfare are at the stage of implementation, said Aseem Bhatnagar, additional director of the institute.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has recommended the cost-effective drugs to be inducted into their paramilitary forces while efforts are on with other forces for induction,” he said.

Part of the range is hypocholorous acid (HOCL), a disinfectant for troopers involved in jungle warfare.
It is helpful in treating necrotising fascitis, a rapidly progressing bacterial infection of soft tissues. Bacterial toxins cause local tissue damage and necrosis, as well as blunt immune system responses.

In such cases, pure 0.01 per cent HoCL has both broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and can rapidly neutralise bacterial toxins.
Bhatnagar said jungle warfare wounds have significant infection risk. The standard approach is to treat them with antibiotics. However, overuse and misuse of antibiotics often leads to breeding resistant strains of superbugs.

A safe and effective alternative method for managing infected wounds is by using a more non-traditional cleansing agent. While the use of HOCL does not obviate the need for antibiotic, it augments treatment and speed of wounds healing. Undesirable side effects and antibiotics resistance gets reduced, Bhatnagar said.

INMAS scientists have also discovered a new route for administering the Nalbuphine injection to reduce pain during mutilating war injuries.
The scientists have discovered that 10 mg injection of Nalbuphine hydrochloride is more effective for an injured trooper if it is given through the submental/sublingual route instead of intra-muscular or intravenous route.(PTI)

I don’t react to criticism as I live in my own world: Dhawan

0

Mohali, Mar 11 (PTI) Shikhar Dhawan has the knack of bouncing back just when his detractors write him off and the Indian batsman says he manages to stay afloat in the toughest of times by shutting out the criticism that comes with lean patches.

Without an international hundred for the past six months, Dhawan announced his comeback with a career-best 143 against Australia, albeit in a losing cause, in the fourth one-dayer here on Sunday.

Asked how he reacts to criticism, the happy-go-lucky cricketer said living in his own bubble helps him keep it calm in the mind.

“First of all, I don’t read newspapers and I don’t take information which I don’t want to. So I don’t know what’s happening around me and I live in my own world. So, I decide in which direction my thoughts are going,” said the 33-year-old after the match.

The best way to deal with pressure is to keep one’s composure, said Dhawan, who rarely gives away what’s going on in his mind.

“I perform best when I am calm. There’s no point in cribbing or being sad,” said Dhawan.

“When I feel hurt, I move on quickly. And I don’t really know what people are writing. I make sure that I am in a positive frame of mind and keep doing my process,” he added.

Process is a word that almost every Indian cricketer refers to often and mostly without explaining the specifics.

When Dhawan was asked to elaborate his idea of a process, he said: “When I talk to myself, I make sure that I cut down negative thoughts that can creep in.

“I accept the reality and move on. I don’t resist something that’s happening. If it’s going good, then it’s good.”

For the batsman, who has amassed more than five thousand runs in ODIs, there are three things that are paramount.

“If I am doing all my skill work, taking care of my fitness and having the right mindset, then I just sit back and enjoy,” said Dhawan, who has been India’s key player in all the recent multi-nation tournaments.

Dhawan offered a sympathetic view on his junior statemate Rishabh Pant, who had a terrible day behind the stumps. The youngster, who replaced Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the last two games, was shoddy with his glovework and also missed an easy stumping chance.

“Like any other young bloke, you have to give him time too. I mean Dhoni bhai has played so many games and for how many years. You simply can’t compare.

“Yes, had he effected the stumping, may be the game could have changed but then it slipped quickly out of our hands and for that, dew played a big role. That’s what it was,” he signed off.

Delaying assembly polls in JK a major setback to democracy: Dr. Farooq

0

Srinagar, Mar 11 : Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Monday expressed dismay on Election Commission of India’s announcement of not holding assembly polls simultaneously with Lok Sabha elections in J&K saying it is a major setback for democracy in the state.

While speaking to media here at party headquarters Nawa- e -Subha, Srinagar, Dr. Farooq said, “Postponement of assembly polls can have serious ramifications across the state. The ones who took this democratically incoherent decision must be up to some mischief otherwise there is no sound reason for not conducting both assembly and LS elections together. If the situation is conducive for parliament elections, what stops them from conducting assembly elections at the same time?”

“I fail to comprehend the yardstick that has been employed by ECI in not announcing both elections together,” adding, “Why same principle was not employed at the time of ULB and Panchayat elections? Perhaps local body polls had become a point of prestige for Prime Minister that is why they were conducted without giving a thought about security and other issues that are being raked up today.”

“I am given to understand that the government of India is up to something fishy; however I warn them to refrain from supplanting their setup in the state. Such a move will inadvertently create ruckus in the state. Let me warn them that such a move will prove detrimental to the interests of the nation. I caution them that any attempt to supplant any setup on the people of Kashmir will put the state to flames, which New Delhi would not be able to douse,” he said.

While asserting that the people of state are awake to the machinations of the forces as are inimical to state’s identity and integrity, he said, “I believe Modi government is contriving to supplant a set up in the state which would work on the whims of Modi. However let me assure them they are undermining the greater good of the nation. People of the state are awake to what they have been doing all along. Nonetheless people of the state will unravel their nefarious designs and give them a befitting reply in the forthcoming general elections.”

Dr. Farooq while flaying the misrule of the incumbent Modi led government said, “If they think that that they will be able to win the elections with an astounding victory, then I must tell them they are living in a fool’s paradise. The war like situation in the country was created to hide the failures of the Modi led government,” adding, “When our CRPF personnel were devoured upon in an incident of violence in Chhattisgarh, why didn’t the PM go and paid reverence to the bodies of the slain paramilitary men there?”

“The whole theatrics of warmongering following the Pulwama attack is aimed to give Modi an escape route. The forthcoming elections are, without any doubt, between the people of India and Narendra Modi. People will no more fall prey to the catchwords of Modi anymore,” adding, “Surgical strikes are not something new; they have been going on in the border areas. However this government is milking the move to extreme for hiding the grimy tale of misrule unleashed on the nation.”

Party president while commenting on any prospective alliance with any political party said, “The position will be clear in a few days from now. We are deliberating on the matter.”

When asked about the party’s candidate from Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, he said, “I will contest from Srinagar constituency. Our party will ask the people to elect us to put up strong front for the protection of the interests of state and its people from the machinations of forces as are persistent in their efforts to destroy the special status of our state.”
