65-Year-Old Australian Tourist Dies due to cardiac arrest in Gulmarg

Srinagar, March 4 : An elderly tourist died due to cardiac arrest at famous tourist resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday.

Official sources told that the tourist identified as Andrew Tafie, 65, fell unconscious at a local hotel and was rushed to nearby hospital where he breathed last his last.

They said that Andrew, a resident of Australia, died due to cardiac arrest.

A police official while confirming the incident told Global News Service (GNS) that the tourist from died due to the heart attack.

He said that a case under 174 CrPc has been registered in this regard and further investigations were taken up.(GNS)

Samoon lays foundation of HDO at Kangan

GANDERBAL, MARCH 04: Principal Secretary, Agriculture and Horticulture Production Department, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon today laid the foundation stone of Horticulture Development Office (HDO) building in presence of Director Horticulture kashmir Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, District Development Commissioner Ganderbal, Hashmat Ali Khan.

Joint Director Horticulture, Chief Horticulture Officer, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, other senior officers besides a large number of people from Kangan were present on the occasion.

The double storey office building will be executed by the Horticulture Construction Division Srinagar at the cost of Rs 63.73 lakh.

On the occasion, Asgar Samoon emphasized on the need to raise the income of the farmers through promotion of local specialty crops, organic farming, production of quality seeds, irrigation facilities and Integrated Farming System.

He said that Ganderbal district has huge potential in horticulture including growing of high quality grafted walnuts and grapes that are exported and to boost this sector in the district, Government is making all out efforts to accelerate its activities.

He said the government is committed to provide best agriculture inputs to all the farmers.  He also urged the local farmers to adopt walnut and grapes cultivation to increase their income.

He asked the concerned officials to aware the fruit growers about the latest inventions and achievements in the field of horticulture and to inform them about various schemes   of the Department.

Advisor Ganai urges FCI, Oil Cos to quickly push supplies to Valley

JAMMU, MARCH 04, 2019 –Advisor to Governor, Mr. Khurshid Ahmed Ganai, Monday directed the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the Coordinator of Public Sector Oil Companies at Jammu to quickly push supplies to the Kashmir Valley to take maximum advantage of the fair weather conditions forecast for the next few day till March 9.

Ganai, who is in-charge of the Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department, was informed by the Coordinator of PSU Oil Companies, Mr. Rajiv Yadav, that about 2500 KL of petrol, 2500 KL of diesel and LPG for over one lakh cylinders are in the transit but due to frequent closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, supplies are not reaching in time.

In view of the shortages of foodgrains and petroleum products in the Valley, the Advisor asked the Traffic and National Highway authorities to facilitate swift movement of trucks so that supplies reach in time. Several drivers of Valley-bound trucks have demanded that they should be given preference by the traffic authorities to move towards Srinagar on the National Highway. There have been reports that truckers are stranded at various locations on the Highway and not allowed to move to Srinagar in a hassle-free manner.

The Advisor assured the truckers that he will take up the matter with the Traffic and National Highway authorities for early redress.

Gunfight rages in Tral

Tral, March 04 : A gunfight rages between militants and government forces in Tral area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district this evening.

Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said that a joint team of forces launched a search operation at Mir Mohalla in Tral this evening.

Reports said as soon as joint team started searches in the area , hiding militants opened fire upon them triggering an encounter.

A police officer also confirmed the incident and said that firing from both sides is on.

Gun salutes for slain Sopore militant

Sopore, March 04 : Militants offered gun salute to slain Ishfaq Majeed at his native village Brath Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday evening.


Sources said that masked militants, two to three in number, appeared in Brath village of Sopore and fired several rounds in the air to pay tributes to slain LeT militant, who was killed along with foreign militant in a 56 hour long gunfight at Babagund village of Handwara.


Local reports said the militants fired several shots in the air and escaped from the spot.
Meanwhile a senior police official when contacted told that we are verifying the facts.


Pertainally on Monday braving incessant rains thousands of people including women attended the funeral prayers of slain Lashkar-e-Toiba militant in Brath village.
An eyewitness said that thousands of people braving rains assembled in Brath village of Sopore to take part in the last rites of slain.

Amid sloganeering, Slain was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard.

Srinagar, Mar 4, : The initial period of this year in Kashmir witnessed 60 casualties of government forces personnel.

At least 104 persons including 37 militants have been killed till first week of March. Besides 37 militants, 10 soldiers, 5 policemen, 44 troopes, a BSF man and 7 civilians have lost life in conflict torn Jammu and Kashmir.

As per the data available with news agency, 37 militants were killed in 17 encounters that raged in different parts of Kashmir including Gulshanpora Tral, Aripal Tral, Choudarybagh Pulwama, Khatpora Kulgam, Hafat Nallah Charar-e-Sharif, Shirmal Shopian, Binnar Baramulla, Drabgam, Chakoora, Kelam Kulgam, Ratnipora Pulwama, Gopalpora Chadoora, Pinglen Pulwama, Warpora Sopore, Tarigam Kulgam, Meemandar Shopian and Babagund Handwara.

  Nine among the 37 slain militants were non-locals.

  Suspected militants carried out 16 grenade attacks on security pickets. A couple of IED blast also rocked some areas, the most lethal one was at Lethpora Pulwama that left over 40 CRPF personnel dead.

As per the data available four government forces personnel including a policeman committed suicide till first week of March. They include CRPF man Mukesh Bhawuk (24 Battalion), army soldier Abishekh Roy Kumar and police head constable Muhammad Shafi Mir of Sadoora Kulgam and soldier Sandeep Singh of Punjab.

Unlike previous year, no rifle snatching or bank robbery incidents occurred in the current year. (CNS)

Altaf Bukhari welcomes laying of foundation stone for Degree College at Hyderpora

Srinagar, Mar 04 : Former finance minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Monday welcomed laying of foundation stone for Government Degree College at Hyderpora in Amirakadal constituency.


Since there was no degree college available from Budgam upto Chadooora area catering to the upper belt of Amirkadal constituency, the former finance minister had proposed a new college at this location keeping in view the hardships faced by the student community.


 Bukhari who is presently outside the state observed that with the establishment of new degree college at Hyderpora, a long pending demand of the area, has been met after a sustained struggle by his electorate.
The government degree college campus with a central location at Hyderpora will have a three-storey building with a 2202.60 Sqm total built up area and will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1736.40 Lacs. 
Bukhari hoped that the academic institution to come up at Hyderpora will be a milestone in further strengthening the higher education status of the area adding that he has been assured by the governor administration that the college will be developed with all facilities including outdoor and indoor infrastructure.


“Establishing a college at this location was much needed as the students of the area after finishing their secondary school level education had to move to other places for continuing their studies. Keeping in view the huge public demand, I had vigorously pressed and pursued its establishment till the government sanctioned the college at the identified location,” he recalled. 
The former finance minister thanked the Governor Shri. SP Malik and his advisory council for honoring his commitment made with the people of Amirakadal as their MLA.


“We can now say that the justice has been done by governor administration with a vast chunk of population who were earlier deprived of this facility,” he observed, adding that in addition to impart quality education to the students of the area at their doorsteps, this new college will also boost the business in the area.


The former finance minister hoped and impressed upon the executing agency to complete the construction of college in a time bound manner so that the admission and classes are started in this college at an earliest. 

Look for peaceful solution to Kashmir issue: group of Delhiites

New Delhi: A group of Delhiites Monday urged the governments of India and Pakistan to look for a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue.

Banding under the #citizensagainstwar, they gathered at Jantar Mantar and formed a human chain in protest of the airstrikes by India on Pakistan and the counter strikes by Pakistan.

Holding the placards of #citizensagainstwar, protesters, including prominent activist Shabnam Hashmi, called upon the governments of India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue through dialogue.

“The only way forward in the conflict between India and Pakistan is to find a peaceful solution the Kashmir issue,” according to the statement issued by ‘#citizensagainstwar’, a group of Delhi residents.

“War allows conflicts to fester the differences to grow. War causes economic hardship not for the rich but for working people, the poor, the downtrodden,” the statement said.

Problems galore as Kupwara-Karnah road closed for over 2 months

Karnah, Mar 04 : The problems for the residents of border areas of Karnah galore as the road continues to remain closed for over two months. There is no immediate hope of reopening of the road.


Things have really become worse given the continuous closure of the road. The worst part is that body of policeman killed in Babagund gunfight on March 02 still lies in Police control room.


The slain cop Naseer Ahmad Kohli son of Shams-u-Din Kohli resident of Gondi Gujran village of Karnah, was a father of two children.
Similarly, thousands of people from Karnah are stranded in Srinagar and Kupwara.


There is a massive shortage of gas and no eatable items available in shops at Karnah because of the road blockade.


The only 33KV line is damaged from last 25 days. “21 poles damaged and administration is nowhere to be seen,” they said.


The people have appealed the administration to restore the road connectivity at the earliest. They demand the electric towers be set up, so that electricity is restored in the area. (KNS)
