Pulwama attack: Why the new generation of Kashmiri youth is prepared to kill and die

0

By : David_Devadas

Thursday’s attack at Lethpora, Pulwama, is a wake-up call. It could signal a more lethal phase of violence.

The nation must stand together in grief, and with resolve. The last thing the country can afford at this juncture is petty politicking. Indeed, the entire spectrum of Kashmiri politics should come together against this tide of violence and death.

For, make no mistake, it is a tide of death and nihilism that we face.
Stern steps must be promptly taken to stop the violence that erupted in Jammu on Friday. It will only make the cycle of hate go around faster.

Leadership crisis

One of the most worrying aspects of the emergent situation is that the young have no respect left for any political leader, including the Kashmiri separatists such as Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the Mirwaiz.
This was reflected in the extremely poor turnout (of candidates as well as voters) in the local bodies’ polls in autumn. A huge question mark hangs over the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, which are due. Attacks such as February 14’s will dampen the prospect further.

Petty politicking

It is tragic that at such a fraught time, sections of the ruling establishment have been disparaging a large part of the spectrum of ‘mainstream’ political parties.

After the Lethpora attack, some in power at the Centre targeted political opponents. Sections of the media joined to accuse some ‘mainstream’ parties of apparently being sympathetic to militants.

This indicates a blindness to the depth of the current challenge to national integrity.

Those in authority must look carefully around them and introspect deeply — the response of most people in Kashmir was a sobering indicator that efforts to win hearts and minds have failed.

Radical edge

The readiness of Kashmiri youth of this generation to die in battle is a radical change from the 1990s. Most of those who undertook suicide attacks in the lethal phase from 1999 to 2001 were Pakistanis — few Kashmiris of that generation of militants wanted to die.
This generation is far more radical.

On the first day of 2018, a Kashmiri teenager undertook a suicide attack at a CRPF camp quite close to Thursday’s attack site, putting up a ferocious fight before he was killed.

Another notable change is that the very lethal Jaish-e-Mohammed has taken the lead over the past year or so. It appears that the ISI now trusts tough operations to Jaish more than to either Hizb-ul Mujahideen or Lashkar-e-Taiba.

A large number of Jaish and other operatives have slipped across the border over the past five months. A number of Pakistanis already lurk in north Kashmir, having infiltrated over the past five or so years. Most have so far lain idle, perhaps waiting for a plan to unfold.

The guerrilla war is likely to become more strident and lethal when these fighters become operational.

Mistaken strategies

The strategy of killing Kashmiri boys in south Kashmir over the past four years, while largely ignoring the lurking foreigners in the north, has had a very negative fall-out.
It has created the impression in Kashmiri minds that Indian forces are determined to kill Kashmiris — this has resulted in a phalanx of support for militants, including foreigners, which gives them great operational advantage.

Hatred has never been more intense in the minds and hearts of young Kashmiris.

The tragic fact is that it is only the young who matter now. Most of those who pick up guns or pelt stones are teenagers or children in their pre-teens. The guerrilla war holds the lure of romance in their minds. They are fearless and hugely motivated — even to die.

Diehard dedication

Thursday’s attack, a suicide mission, was one of the most stunning in the past three decades. It claimed 49 CRPF men’s lives, right on the national highway, in the middle of a particularly harsh winter. The attacker was undeterred by the massive convoy of 2,500 paramilitary soldiers, into which he drove an SUV.

Only half a dozen other attacks in Kashmir — including those on Srinagar’s cantonment in December 1999 or on the state assembly in October 2001 — and on our Parliament in December 2001 have been more audacious.

In terms of numbers killed, the toll here is now worse than in the massacres at Chittisinghpora in 2000 and at Wandhama in 1998.

Photos of Pakistan cricketers removed from Mohali stadium after Pulwama attack

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) on Sunday removed the photographs of Pakistani cricketers from various points inside Mohali stadium as a “humble step” to show solidarity with the families of soldiers killed in the Pulwama  attack.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the cricket body’s office bearers in Chandigargh, PCA treasurer Ajay Tyagi told PTI. “As a humble step, the PCA has decided to show its solidarity with the families of slains of the Pulwama attack. There is so much anger in the nation against the heinous attack and PCA is no different in this,” Tyagi said.

He said there are nearly 15 photos of Pakistani cricketers, which were kept inside the stadium at various points including in the galleries, long room, reception and ‘hall of fame’ area.

The Shahid Afridi-led Pakistani side had faced a 29-run defeat at India’s hands in the 2011 World Cup cricket semi-finals which was played here in March. Tyagi said among the Pakistani cricketers whose photographs have been removed are present Prime Minister Imran Khan, Afridi, Javed Miandad and Wasim Akram.

Forty nine CRPF men were killed and five injured on Thursday in one of the deadliest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir when a Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into a bus in Pulwama district.

No all-party meet called, when 55 innocents were roasted live in Sopore: APHC

SRINAGAR, FEB 17 : Strongly condemning the rampage and brutalities against Kashmiries and Muslims in Jammu, All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman said that nobody on earth particularly we Kashmiries rejoice and celebrate the human loss of any race, region or religion—as our oppressor distributes sweets when dozens of our youth are gunned down by their “brave soldiers”.

Hurriyat chairman said that muscular and revengeful response to the Pulwama incident against Muslims of Jammu and Kashmiri employees of darbar move looks a well planned conspiracy to tear away every fiber of communal harmony, social bonding and collective brotherhood.

He said that horrifying scenes of ruthlessly beating to pulp of Kashmiri drivers, students, employees, others and burning their vehicles, stoning their residences under the nose of biased police with their encouragement and go ahead signal has once again proved the two nation theory right and timely as majority class of India finds it hard to accept the minority particularly Muslims—as the independence from British rule was only for Hindus—Muslims continue to be subjugated, threatened and harassed on one or other pretext—negating the tall and much hyped slogans of secularism.

Hurriyat chairman said that in chaining Kashmiries, every Indian, particularly its political class echoes in one voice and all support and endorse the venomous statement of its PM to give his armed forces free hand to deal in Kashmir whatever way they want. It is an open threat and license to crush and kill every Kashmiri– & those men in uniform to be rewarded.

Pro-freedom leader said that non Kashmiris working here for their bread and butter, students or Darbar move employees enjoy the hospitality to the maximum and nobody ever has been harmed even the slightest. Army massacring dozens of our youth on daily bases, no person belonging to their region and religion feels unsafe here. Commenting on the social media posts of some outside Medico working in SKIMS, Hurriyat chairman said that hatred and venomous mindset has pouted out even from the white   apron—an indication and identification of a life saver. He said that one is surprised that our ailing and stressed people are forced to seek the remedy of their ills from such a beast in white uniform—who is not only an ugly blot on himself, but is tarnishing the pious and noble profession.

Pro-freedom leader said the incident in Pulwama has put all the so-called secular and Hindutwa faces in the same basket—but when 55 innocents were roasted live in Sopore or when our dozens of youth are massacred daily, no eye in India gets moist, no all party meet is called. This dual attitude is bound to have repercussions.

He said who else than us feels the pain of losing dear ones—but threatening with might and free hand statements only fuel the already charged situation. Statesmanship and good sense should have prevailed on the Indian leadership to address the root cause of this unabated bloodshed.

Pulwama attack: CRPF issues advisory against fake pictures

0

The CRPF on February 17 cautioned people against “fake pictures” being circulated online of body parts of its 40 jawans killed in the Pulwama attack, the deadliest militant strike on security forces in Kashmir Valley in three decades.

“It has been noticed that on social media some miscreants are trying to circulate fake pictures of body parts of our slains to invoke hatred while we stand united.

“Please DO NOT circulate/share/like such photographs or posts,” the force said on its official Twitter handle @crpfindia.

It also asked people to report any such content by sending an email to [email protected].

Officials said a number of such photographs of badly mutilated bodies were being circulated and the development was brought to the notice of force officials after which the advisory was issued.

The paramilitary force, that has deployed about 65,000 personnel as part of 61 battalions in Jammu and Kashmir, issued another advisory on bogus messages being circulated on social media vis-a-vis Kashmiri students based in various places in the country.

“Fake news about harassment of students from Kashmir is being propagated by various miscreants on social media. CRPF helpline has enquired about complaints about harassment and found them incorrect.

“These are attempts to invoke hatred. Please DO NOT circulate such posts,” CRPF in another tweet.

Investigators suspect the attack that killed 49 CRPF personnel in Pulwama on February 14 was executed by Jaish-e-Mohammed militant by blowing up a 20-kg-strong RDX mix explosive, laden in a car, next to a troop-carrier bus plying as part of a convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.

The impact of the blast was so strong that the bodies of the soldiers were blown to smithereens and flung many feet away from the site of explosion.
