Won’t let Assam turn into another Kashmir’, says Amit Shah on citizen register

0

BJP chief Amit Shah on Sunday said that Modi-led government at the Centre will not allow Assam to become another Kashmir and that is why it has brought about the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Saying that the NRC had been brought in to identify infiltrators, he said, the BJP will rid Assam of all such aliens by deporting them.

“We won’t let Assam become another Kashmir, this is our commitment. We’ll repeat the NRC exercise as many times as required to, but we’ll identify and deport each infiltrator from Assam,” Shah said while addressing a public rally at North Lakhimpur in Assam.

Shah criticized the Congress and its former ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and said both the parties had done nothing to implement the Assam Accord despite ruling most of the period since the pact was signed in 1985.

Referring to the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which the Centre couldn’t present in Rajya Sabha, he said misinformation was being spread as if it was only for Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

“It was not for Northeast alone, but for all refugees across the country. The way demography is changing in Assam, without the Citizenship Bill, the people of the state will be in danger,” he added.

He also spoke about the Pulwama attack in which 49 CRPF men were killed in a suicide bombing on Thursday.

“This cowardly act was done by Pakistani militants. Their (troopers) sacrifices will not go in vain, because there is no Congress government at the Centre. It is BJP government and the Narendra Modi government will not compromise on any security issue,” he added.

Saying that the government at the Centre was not that of the Congress, Shah said that the current government was that of the BJP and was led by Modi, who he said was determined to uproot militancy from the country.

No people from Pakistan came to attack CRPF convoy in Kashmir: Swami Agnivesh

0

Maharashtra, Feb 17, :  Renowned social activist and religious leader from India, Swami Agnivesh Sunday said that the suicide attack carried out in Kashmir was the work of a Kashmiri youth and no people from Pakistan came to do the job.

“To blame Pakistan is a different question but the important thing is that the local element was involved in the audacious attack that killed so many troopers. Militants have no religion and to attack Kashmiris in India for the attack carried out by militants is not only disgusting but it shows how a particular political party is eager to incite trouble and cash votes from people in the upcoming Parliament elections,” Agnivesh told news agency over phone from Maharashtra.

He alleged that incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi used ‘Surgical Strike’ and soldiers of the country for political benefit. “Whole country is mourning the deaths of troopers and a particular political party is eager to exploit the sentiments of people to gain votes. I condemn the attacks on Kashmiri students and businessmen. Those who are doing it have vested interests and are not the well wishers of the country,” Agnivesh said.

He said it is high time for Pakistan, Afghanistan and India to share table and resolve all the issues that give rise to militancy.

Agnivesh said that some people are propagating hyper-nationalism which is not good for the ethos and brotherhood of the country. “Why to attack a student or a businessman from Kashmir when they have nothing to do with this attack. This is sheer madness and an attempt to polarize the society,” he said.

In response to a question about the withdrawal of security from separatist leaders, Swami Agnivesh said that any decision taken in haste always have serious consequences.

He termed the attack on CRPF convoy as ‘intelligence failure’ and said that even Governor Satya Pal Malik admitted it. “No people from Pakistan came and attacked CRPF convoy. It was a local militant Adil Ahmed who did it. We have to understand what prompted this local militant to take such an extreme step,” he said and lamented that a particular political party is using soldiers for electoral gains. (CNS)

Kashmiri student arrested in Himachal Pradesh for WhatsApp status on Lethpora attack

Srinagar

A BTech student of a Himachal Pradesh University was arrested for allegedly “glorifying” suicide bomber Aadil Ahmed Dar, who was behind the Pulwama attack, in which at least 40 CRPF personnel were killed, amid tension on campus Saturday, reported The Indian Express.

According to report published by The Indian Express said Tahseen Gul, 21, a native of Kashmir and second-year student of Chitkara University in Baddi, had allegedly put up a picture of Dar as his Whatsapp profile photo and the words — “Allah Talah aap ki shahadat kabool kare (May Allah accept your martydom)” — as his status.

“He was booked under IPC section 153B (imputing, making assertions prejudicial to national integration). The FIR was lodged on the basis of a complaint filed by retd. Col. AK Chauhan, dean of Chitkara University,” said the report.

The report said on Friday night, hundreds of the university’s students gathered outside Gul’s hostel, demanding his arrest and of other Kashmiri students.

“The mounting tension on campus spurred the authorities to seek police protection. Several personnel were deployed on campus early Saturday and six Kashmiri students were shifted to a guesthouse,” the report said.

On Saturday morning, police detained six Kashmiri students including Gul and questioned them at length. While Gul was booked and subsequently arrested, the remaining five students were released.

The report quoted Baddi Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohit Malpani as having said, “Gul has been taken into custody and is being questioned. As a precautionary measure, we also questioned five other students of the university who are natives of Kashmir. All five were found innocent and released.”

In Barotiwala police station, Gul told The Indian Express, “When I learnt about the attack in Pulwama, I first updated my WhatsApp status and inadvertently also tagged the picture of the suicide bomber. Later, I realised my mistake and deleted my WhatsApp status. Next day, a few fellow students raised strong objections to my WhatsApp status message and picture and told me to remove it. Sensing a threat to my life, I informed the university authorities. I also submitted a written apology to the university. Later on, I came to know that the university had lodged a police complaint against me. I regret my mistake.”

Police have confiscated Gul’s mobile phone and a laptop which are being scrutinised by cyber experts. The student, who underwent a medical examination, will be produced in court Sunday, The Indian Express reported.

IED, bombs menace growing more in J-K than Naxal theatre: Report

0
New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir has seen a steady increase in IED blasts and other bombing incidents over the last five years, with 2018 witnessing a 57 per cent jump in such incidents while two other major theatres of violence -- LWE-hit areas and North East - saw the number of such incidents going down, a latest report has found.
While the state that shares border with both Pakistan and China saw a total of 37 incidents of bombing (improvised explosive device and explosive ordnance triggered) in 2014, these incidents grew to 46 in 2015, 69 in 2016, 70 in 2017 and as high as 117 during the last year.
A report in this context was presented by the National Bomb Data Centre (NBDC) of the NSG during a two-day international conference in Delhi, that concluded recently, on the menace and threats posed by IEDs.
The NBDC of the elite 'black cats' commando force is the national repository of all IED and bombing incidents that take place in the country and the unit also conducts post-blast investigation of all such incidents, including the Pulwama blast case.
The report made a special mention of J-K and the growing threat of IED and similar explosives in the state at a time when investigators suspect that the deadly attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel in Pulwama on February 14 was executed by a 'lone wolf' Jaish-e-Mohammed militants by blowing off a 20-kg strong RDX mix explosive, laden in a car, next to a troop-carrier bus plying as part of a convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.
"There was considerable decrease in IED blast incidents in all regions of the country except in J-K where militants resorted to increased use of IEDs during 2018," the report accessed by PTI said.
It added that while IED blast incidents reduced to 77 last year from 98 in 2017 in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) hit areas of the country, such incidents in J-K rose by 57 per cent from 21 in 2017 to 33 during last year.
The IED blast incidents in the north east insurgency theatre reduced to 32 last year as compared to 66 in the year 2017, indicating a decrease of 52 per cent, the report accessed by the news agency said.
The report said while there was a "steep decrease" in the number of IED blast incidents in the country as a whole, fatalities due to these explosions increased "considerably" in all the violence theatres of J-K, LWE and North East.
In 2017, while a total of 244 incidents of IED blasts took place in the country leading to 61 deaths, the last year witnessed only 174 such incidents but a higher number of deaths at 108.
While one death was recorded due to IED blast in J-K in 2017, the improvised explosives claimed 13 lives in the state that is reeling under militancy for past many decades.
"Militants in J-K, who were normally relying on explosive ordnance, also resorted to IEDs during 2018 as these devices offered them near total anonymity," the report said.
Explosive ordnance denotes shells and bombs of military grade.
The report said fatal casualties in IED blast incidents increased considerably during the last year, as compared to 2017, in the LWE, north and J-K theatres and also the rest of India.
"The disgruntled and desperate insurgents, terrorists and CPI (Maoists), who had suffered setbacks in 2018, resorted to renewed IED attacks to avoid direct confrontation with the security forces.
"55 people, including civilians were killed in LWE areas alone, which accounted for more than 50 per cent of the total fatalities that took place in the country in IED blast incidents," the report said.
Of the 55 killed, fifteen were civilians which accounted for 27 per cent of total casualties which took place due to IED blast incidents in LWE areas, it said.
J-K, as per the report, also witnessed a "rise" in non-fatal casualties in IED blast incidents as compared to the other two major combat theatres.
Although there was a steep increase in number of fatalities in IED blast incidents in 2018 as compared to the previous year, the non-fatal casualties saw a reverse trend in the year 2018 recording a considerable decrease in number of non-fatal casualties in all regions of the country "except" J-K, it stated.
The report said that overall number of non-fatal casualties in 2018 is 33 per cent less than the number of non-fatal casualties recorded in 2017.
The report said while in J-K security forces were the "prime target" of militants IEDs, all such devices-- using a mix of metal shrapnels, RDX, TNT and incendiary chemicals-- were largely made of "high grade explosives."
