Trump exaggerates the effects of immigration on crime and the economy

0

Trump exaggerates the link between immigration and crime; almost all research shows legal and illegal immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than the native-born population.

In general, economists say illegal immigration tends to affect less-educated and low-skilled American workers the most, which disproportionately encompasses black men and recently arrived, low-educated legal immigrants, including Latinos.

The consensus among economic research studies is that the impact of immigration is primarily a net positive for the U.S. economy and to workers overall, especially over the long term. According to a comprehensive 2016 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on the economic impacts of the U.S. immigration system, studies on the impact of immigration showed “the seemingly paradoxical result that although larger immigration flows may generate higher rates of unemployment in some sectors, overall, the rate of unemployment for native workers declines.”

Mumbai, Feb 5 (PTI) Snapping its two-day losing streak, the rupee ticked higher by 23 paise to close at 71.57 per US dollar Tuesday amid fresh foreign fund inflows and gains in domestic equities.

Forex dealers said investors were cautious ahead RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee outcome scheduled for February 7.

“Rupee is consolidating in the range, as most of the Asian region’s markets shut for Lunar New Year holidays. Near term focus of domestic forex market will be on three-day central bank policy meet, starting Tuesday,” said V K Sharma, Head PCG & Capital Markets Strategy, HDFC Securities.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange, the rupee opened stronger at 71.72 a dollar. The local unit moved in a range of 71.55 to 71.80, before finally ending at 71.57, showing a gain of 23 paise.

On Monday, the rupee had plunged by 55 paise to close at 71.80 against the US dollar.

Forex traders said sustained foreign fund outflows and surging crude oil prices restricted the rupee up move.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.13 per cent at 95.97 ahead of US President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

AR Rahman was ‘starving’ to look thin a day before his Oscar win

0

Mumbai, Feb 5 (PTI) AR Rahman created history in 2009 by becoming the first ever Indian to win two Academy Awards in a single night but the music composer says on the eve of the ceremony, he was “starving” to look in shape.

Rahman bagged two Academy Awards, one for the original score for “Slumdog Millionaire” and the other for the hugely popular global hit “Jai Ho.”

While things changed dramatically for Rahman post his win, when asked what was his mental space on the eve of the big award event, Rahman told PTI, “Actually nothing. I was just starving to look thin for the ceremony!”

The Danny Boyle-directed drama swept the 81st Academy Award with 8 trophies out of 10 nominations.

Rahman shot to global fame with his win and went on to get two more Oscar nominations in 2011 for his original score and song for Boyle’s “127 Hours”.

When asked if it is difficult to move past the shadows of two Oscars, Rahman said, “Yes. I have moved on because it’s a great identity for me and I needed that identity to be in Hollywood. Now, whenever I am mentioned there, people know my name.

“That helped me move further not just in music, but also producing movies and going into technologies like virtual reality and cinematic virtual reality and so much of the stuff that’s going to come this year. So, all this freedom came with this power.”

The composers was speaking at a special ceremony to celebrate the film’s ten years of Oscar win, Monday.

The event took place in Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, as an ode to “Slumdog Millionaire”, which chronicled the story of a boy’s journey from rags to riches.

On the occasion, Rahman narrated an incident how Anil Kapoor missed watching him bag the Golden Globe award as the actor went out to get a drink for him.

“I was sitting next to Anil and I was so thirsty. He was very kind and said he’ll get a Sprite for me. By the time he went and got it, I got the award,” Rahman said.

To which Anil replied, “I’ll never forgive him! I was waiting for him to get an award. But he was thirsty so I said I’ll go. There was so much crowd at the bar counter, by the time I was back he got the award!

“But then I saw the Oscar, which was the cherry on the cake. You don’t know what I felt when he went on stage and the song was played. I wish I could break the protocol and start dancing on stage. I had to control myself,” he added.

Excited to test NZ’s bench strength in T20 series against India: Williamson

0

Wellington, Feb 5 (PTI) The deflating ODI loss behind him, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson Tuesday said he is excited about the prospect of testing unheralded players against a “top” team like India in the T20 series starting Wednesday.

New Zealand have drafted in two debutants — all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and right-arm pacer Blair Tickner — in the T20 squad besides all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijen, who has played just one T20 and wicketkeeper Tim Seifert (8 T20s). The Kiwis lost the five-match ODI series 1-4.

Williamson said with Martin Guptill ruled out due to a back injury, some rookie players will be in action in the three-match T20 series against India.

“Martin (Guptill) has been ruled out of the series because of a back injury. We have a different squad altogether with some new faces. We are going to see some debutants throughout the series and it is really exciting,” the Kiwi skipper said on the eve of the opening T20.

“It’s a positive thing that a number of guys are getting opportunities to have those experiences against a fantastic Indian side.”

With Guptill not in the scheme of things, Williamson didn’t rule out the possibility of opening the innings in the T20 matches.

“At this stage we are going to look at the surface, we are not decided just yet. We are looking to pin down the balance. There are a number of all-rounders which will affect the positions I suppose,” he said when asked about New Zealand’s possible opening combination.

“There are a number of guys who could potentially fill that role. Obviously (Colin) Munro is expected in the top-three. Power players could potentially move up the order or it could be me,” he added.

Williamson emphasised on the need to balance experienced pacer Tim Southee’s workload going into the World Cup which will start May 30 in the UK.

“Tim (Southee) has played a huge amount of cricket. He is a massive part of our side. He is a leader in the group,” he said.

Williamson said any form of international cricket against a quality side is good for the preparation of the team.

“Obviously it is the shorter version of what we can expect in the World Cup but it is another great opportunity to play international cricket against what is a very strong opposition. Any time you get opportunities to have those experiences it’s always good,” Williamson said.

“It’s (World Cup) not that far away now. Any opportunity you get to play in international cricket is beneficial. It’s (T20s) still an important fixture especially against a competitive side like India. So, I think all the people involved in the series will get a lot out of it.”

Williamson admitted that it is always tough to adapt from one format to the other in quick time.

“It is always a challenge to adapt from Test to ODI to T20. It does require adjustments in mindset. Whether it’s bowling or batting you need to try and adapt quickly,” he said.

“We would look to try and get things right in terms of executing our plans, we want to step up a little bit. Obviously, it’s a different format but it’s exciting that we have new group.
