0

The Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen, which has been fighting for “liberation of Kashmir” and involved in a series of terror acts, has been banned by the government, the Home Ministry said Wednesday.

In a notification, the ministry said the central government believes that the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) is involved in terrorism as it has committed and participated in various acts of terrorism in India and its members are getting financial as well as logistic support from their handlers based abroad.

The Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen came into existence in 1990 with the objective of “liberation of Kashmir” and has been actively pursuing the same by way of acts of terror, the ministry said.

“Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of sub-section (1) of section 35 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, the central government hereby makes the following further amendments in the First Schedule to the said Act, namely:- In the First Schedule to the said Act, after serial number 40 and the entries relating thereto, the following serial number and entries shall be inserted, namely:- ’41. Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) and all its manifestations’,” it said.

The TuM has carried out a number of terrorist attacks, besides subversive acts, such as grenade attacks, weapons snatching and supporting other terrorist outfits like the Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba, in terms of financial and logistic support in the recent past, the notification said.

The terror group has also committed acts of terrorism and promoting acts of terrorism. It has been engaged in radicalisation and recruitment of youth for terrorist activities in India.

The notification said a number of cases have been registered by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the recent past, in which it is found that the TuM has played a major role in commission of terrorist acts and a number of its cadre have been arrested.

In the cases, it was also found that the group is running terrorist training centres for Kashmiri youth and is likely to recruit more youth from the Jammu and Kashmir, it said.(PTI)

Army detains three RR men over killing of soldier Aurangzeb

Three personnel of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles have been detained by the Army and are being questioned for their alleged involvement in the abduction and killing of fellow soldier Aurangzeb by militants in June last year. Sources said it is suspected that the three RR soldiers shared information about Rifleman Aurangzeb who was abducted after he set out from the camp for his home in Poonch.

His killing led to outrage across the country. He was conferred the Shaurya Chakra posthumously on Independence Day last year. Two days ago, his father joined the BJP in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a rally in Vijaypur, Jammu. On Monday, 27 year-old Tawseef Ahmad, brother of Abid Wani, one of the three soldiers detained, was taken to hospital with multiple bruises after being assaulted, allegedly by RR personnel.

Reached for comment, Defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia told The Indian Express that “details are being ascertained” about the incident. Ahmad was first taken to the Pulwama district hospital from where he was referred to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar. Doctors said his condition was stable.

PDP leader and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who visited the Srinagar hospital Tuesday to inquire about Ahmad’s condition, said: “I will talk to the Corps Commander regarding the matter. I am sure Governor Sahib will take note of this matter… his brother is also missing, his whereabouts are not known.”

Sources said detained RR personnel Abid Wani, Tajamul Ahmad and Adil Wani are facing an inquiry for allegedly sharing information about Aurangzeb. “Two are from Pulwama and one is from Kulgam. Their role came up during the investigation into the killing of Aurangzeb,” sources said.

Ahmad’s family members said he was called to the RR camp in Pulwama where was beaten. “When he came out of the camp, he was spotted by a local resident and taken to hospital,” one of his cousins said. Dr Abdul Rashid Parra, medical superintendent of Pulwama district hospital, said: “We received a patient on Monday evening. He reported to the hospital with an alleged history of beating. The patient had multiple bruises. His whole body was bruised. He was then referred to a Srinagar hospital for further treatment.”

Dr Saleem Tak, medical superintendent of SMHS Hospital, said: “The patient’s condition is stable and he is currently under observation at the hospital. The patient has soft tissue injuries.”

New York Times Pokes Mark Zuckerberg With Anniversary Video

0

SAN FRANCISCO:

The New York Times used one of Facebook’s tactics to poke at the social network by sharing a nostalgic anniversary video spotlighting its stumbles.

The video lasting slightly less than two minutes congratulates Mark Zuckerberg for turning Facebook into an online behemoth and becoming wealthy in the process, but spends most of its time playfully flipping through virtual cards recounting its troubles with privacy, hacking, hate speech, violence and more.

“Happy Birthday, Facebook! 15 years today — and what a rollercoaster it has been,” read the message released Monday on the newspaper’s opinion page and on Twitter, in the style of Facebook compilation videos.

“We created a friendship anniversary video for Mark Zuckerberg to mark the day.”

The video logged some 375,000 views and was shared by others on Twitter more than 3,000 times within hours of being tweeted.

The compilation included a series of barbs at Zuckerberg, with screenshots reading, “You seem to like giving your users’ data away,” and “Well, at least you haven’t done too badly,” noting his net worth of $55 billion.

Zuckerberg on Monday marked the embattled social network’s 15th anniversary with a posted message saying that he sees Facebook as a largely “positive” force for society, even as the leading social network faces a wave of criticism over issues of manipulation, misinformation, abuse and other social ills.

Zuckerberg has acknowledged that Facebook needs to do more to restore trust, and ferret out misinformation and abuse, and on Monday repeated his pledge to spend more “on safety and security.

His comments came 15 years after he and classmates at Harvard University founded what was known as “the facebook” and began a mission described by Zuckerberg as connecting the world.

Sensex Gains Over 250 Points, Nifty Above 11,000; Tech Mahindra Jumps – 5 Things To Know

0

Stock markets started Wednesday’s session on a strong note, with the Sensex rising more than 250 points, ahead of the outcome of the central bank’s policy meeting. The 30-scrip index rose as much as 249 points to touch 36,866 in early trade, while the Nifty climbed 64 points to 10,998. Gains were led by buying in IT and media stocks. At 9:26 am, the Sensex traded 255 points higher at 36,871 and the Nifty was at 10,998, up 64 points from the previous close.
Here are five things to know:
Top advancers on the Nifty50 were Tech Mahindra, Zee, Hindustan Petroleum and Indiabulls Housing Finance, trading between 1.6 per cent and 5 per cent higher.
Equities in other Asian markets logged mild gains amid cautious traded as investors waited to see if US President Donald Trump drops any hints of progress on tariffs in his State of the Union speech.
MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was flat with China and several other markets in the region still closed for the Lunar New Year holiday. Japan’s Nikkei edged up 0.3 per cent, while E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 barely budged.
Analysts awaited the outcome of the RBI’s policy meeting due on Thursday. With consumer inflation below its medium-term goal, many economists expect the central bank to change its policy stance in preparation for a rate cut in the next policy meet due in April.
A higher closing for the Sensex and Nifty on Wednesday would mark the fifth straight day of gain for the benchmark indices. The Sensex and Nifty have added 1,025 points (2.9 per cent) and 282 points (2.7 per cent) in past four sessions.

Fantastic time to be in entertainment business: Actress Nimrat Kaur

0

New Delhi, (IANS) Actress Nimrat Kaur says it is a fantastic time to be in the entertainment business — thanks to the boom of digital platforms.

“It is a great time (to be in the entertainment business). There is a lot of work happening. People are constantly coming out with new content be it actors, technicians, writers and directors. So, it is a fantastic time to be in the entertainment business,” Nimrat told IANS.

The actress has starred in web series “The Test Case”, in which she was seen essaying role of a combat soldier.

She said working on the show has been the “most gratifying experience” for her.

“As a medium, it (digital platform) is so fantastic and exciting. You are able to tell a story over such a long format. I have been really fortunate and really loved that experience a lot,” she added.

On the work front, Nimrat will return as Tasneem Qureshi in the final season of American thriller series “Homeland”.

Is Jason Holder the tallest double-centurion in Test cricket?

0

Jason Holder’s 202 in the first Test against England means he has scored a double-century and also taken ten wickets in a Test. How many people have done this? asked Ricardo Harrison from Barbados
A few months before Jason Holder scored that magnificent unbeaten 202 in Barbados, he took 11 for 103 in the match against Bangladesh in Kingston last June. Holder was the sixth to complete this particular double in Tests. Pride of place should perhaps go to the Indian allrounder Vinoo Mankad, who made two double-centuries (both against New Zealand in 1955-56) and also had two ten-fors – against England and Pakistan. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan might yet join him: he has got one double-century (217 against New Zealand in Wellington in 2016-17) and two ten-fors so far.

Wasim Akram took ten or more wickets in a match five times, and also hit a spectacular unbeaten 257 against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura in 1996-97. Ian Botham managed four ten-fors, and clattered 208 against India at The Oval in 1982.

The most surprising name on this list is probably that of Australia’s Allan Border. It’s no shock to find he scored two double-centuries – one against New Zealand and one against England – but although he only took 39 Test wickets in all, 11 of them came in an upset win over West Indies in Sydney in 1988-89.

Is Jason Holder the tallest man to score a double-century in a Test?asked David Horton from England
Measuring in at 201 cm or 6′ 7″, Jason Holder does seem to be the tallest man ever to score a Test double-century. Players’ heights are sometimes inconsistently recorded – or not recorded at all – but I suspect he took the mark from Jason Gillespie, who stands 195 cm, or about 6′ 5″. The tallest Test centurion was probably Tony Greig, at around 6′ 7.5″ (202 cm). Tom Moodyand Jacob Oram were also imposingly tall, while “Two Metre Peter” Fulton of New Zealand scored his only two centuries in the same Test, against England in Auckland in 2012-13.

West Indies scored 306 in Antigua with only one score of 50. Are there any higher totals with no half-centuries at all? asked Alex McMaster from England
Darren Bravo’s hard-working 50 was the highest score of West Indies’ 306 against England in North Sound the other day, although three others got into the forties. There are two higher Test totals that didn’t include an individual half-century: England made 315 against West Indies in Port-of-Spain in 1985-86, when David Gower’s 47 was the highest individual score. And in Johannesburg in 2015-16, South Africa made 313 against England: everyone made it into double figures, but the highest score was Dean Elgar’s 46. ESPN

Right-Wing Leader Who Shot At Mahatma Gandhi’s Effigy In UP Arrested

0

ALIGARH: Hindu Mahasabha leader, Pooja Shakun Pandey who was missing since she and her group members enacted the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on his 71st death anniversary, was arrested on Tuesday from Tappal in Aligarh. Her husband, Ashok Pandey has also been taken into custody, said the police.

The Uttar Pradesh police have registered criminal cases against 12 people in connection with the shocking recreation of Gandhi’s assassination by the right-wing group. Last week the police had arrested three others, who were seen in the video.

There was outrage on social media over the video of Pooja Shakun Pandey, wearing saffron, shooting an effigy of Gandhi with an air pistol and garlanding his assassin Nathuram Godse. The Hindu Mahasabha general secretary had also told reporters that her organisation had started a new tradition and it would be an annual event “just like the burning of Raavan on Dussehra”.

The right-wing group regards the day of Mahatma Gandhi’s death as Shaurya Divas (Bravery Day), in honour of Nathuram Godse. The right-wing activist was one of the early members of the organisation, founded by Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1915.

This is not the first time the Hindu Mahasabha has tried to glorify Nathuram Godse. In 2015, the group’s leader, Swami Pranavananda had announced plans to install statues of Nathuram Godse across six districts of Karnataka. He also described the assassin as a “patriot” who had worked with the blessings of Hindu nationalist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

Shah Faesal’s resignation not yet accepted by govt

0

The government has not accepted the resignation of IAS officer Shah Faesal even after more than a month since he quit the civil services to join politics, according to highly placed sources in the government.

Faesal, the 2010 IAS topper, had submitted his resignation on January 4 without detailing the reasons.

The J&K Government’s website carrying the details of the in-service IAS officers lists Faesal at No. 49 (as on February 5), showing him as “pursuing a mid-career master’s programme in public administration at Edward S Mason Harvard University”.

In the normal course, his resignation should have been accepted by now as he has declared himself unshackled by the service rules that could have prevented him from airing his views, but there is no word about his resignation having been accepted.

Sources in the government said they had no problems in his joining the politics as it was his wish.

Faesal had announced his plunge into the politics on January 9, claiming that he was doing so to protest the “unabated killings in Kashmir, marginalisation of Muslims in India and the undermining of the institutions like NIA, CBI and RBI”.

In his media interviews and an aggressive campaign on the social media, he came out as a critical voice against the system. One of his salvos fired on January 28 was that the “time has come for the Kashmir resolution”.

A highly placed source said the delay in acceptance of his resignation could be because an inquiry was going on against him for his unacceptable remarks made on the social media a few months ago. It is because, the source said, if his resignation was accepted, he would be off the hook and no action could be taken against him.

The politically savvy class, however, said the government would prefer not to take any action against Faesal to avoid precipitating the matter and make him a hero. A top source in the government told The Tribune that his resignation would be accepted and remarked: “If someone wants to become a leader, why should we stop him (from doing so).”
