Altaf Bukhari grieved over Habba Kadal, Baramulla fire incidents

SRINAGAR, January 3: Former Finance Minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari has expressed grief over the tragic fire incidents at Habbakadal in Srinagar and Old Town area of Baramulla district in which at least seven residential structures were severely damaged.

Bukhari urged the governor led administration to provide all necessary assistance to the affected families so that they can resurrect themselves, adding the process may be expedited in view of the prevailing winter season.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the fire affected families and solicit personal intervention of the Honb’le Governor for ensuring distribution of adequate ex-gratia compensation to the victims of this tragedy,” Bukhari said.

He urged the administration to provide all necessary relief and rehabilitation items through Red Cross at an earliest to the five families whose houses were damaged in a devastating fire incident in Dal-Hassanyar area of Habbakadal in Srinagar and two families who lost their shelter in the blaze at Old Town area of Baramulla district.

            The former finance minister also urged the respective district administrations to ensure distribution of adequate ex-gratia compensation to the victims of fire incidents till formal damage assessment is made by the revenue officials.

            Expressing deep anguish over the loss of property, Bukhari appealed people to safeguard their lives and property by taking precautionary measures to avert such incidents in future.

“We should take precautions and prevent short circuits in our homes, shops and business establishments because most often these short circuits have proven disastrous in terms of life and property,” he said.

Tral gunfight: Injured soldier succumbs in army hospital Udhampur

Srinagar, Jan 3 (GNS): An army soldier who was injured critically in a gunfight with militants in forest area  of Gulshanpora Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district succumbed to injuries in army’s command hospital in Udhampur.

Official sources told GNS that the soldier identified as Sepoy Nehminlan Haokip of 42 RR was airlifted to Udhampur where he succumbed to injuries.

A police officer also confirmed to GNS about the death of the soldier.

Earlier, the soldier was injured along two others in a fierce gnfight that saw killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen militants so far.

The encounter ensued after army’s 42 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation following the inputs about the presence of group of Hizbul Mujahideen militants in a hideout. (GNS)

Two Bugglers held in Sopore : Police

Sopore Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested two bugglers and have recovered stolen items from their possession.

Police statement said that two bugglers were arrested following complaint from Sajad Ahemd Khan of Zehanpora that some unknown burglars have stolen batteries from Airtel tower at Waripora Rafiabad.

Statement said that in this regard a FIR number 167/18 U/S, 379 RPC was registered and soon after a police team started investigation in this case, however with the efforts two bugglers who identified as Ghulam Hassan Bhat son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat resident of Ningli Sopore at present Gund Jahangir Hajjin and Irshad Ahmed Bhat son of Mohammad Akbar Bhat resident of Tarzoo Sopore were arrested.

Statement said that during questioning stolen items were recovered from them.

Two Hizb militants killed, three soldiers injured, fresh firing resumes in Tral

Srinagar, Jan 3 (GNS): Two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit were killed and Three soldiers sustained injuries in a gunfight at forest area of Gulshanpora Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Reports reaching GNS said that the fresh firing has started in the area even as clashes are also going on at some distance from the encounter site in which ten persons have reportedly suffered pellet injuries.

A police officer said that the gunfight broke out after army’s 42 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation following the inputs about the presence of a group of Hizbul Mujahideen militants in a hideout.

In the gunfight, two militants were killed and three soldiers suffered injuries, he said.

The injured soldiers were taken to army’s 92 base hospital Srinagar where from one critically wounded soldier was airlifted to army’s command hospital Udhampur for advanced treatment, he said.
He said that the operation is in the final stage and one or two militants are still believed to be hiding in the area and are engaged in the gunfight.  (GNS)

Army soldier killed, another injured in Poonch snow avlance

Poonch, Jan 3 (GNS): An army soldier was killed and another injured after an avalanche hit an army post in Sawjian sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Official sources told GNS that an army post of 40 RR came under an avalanche today morning at KK Galki, forward area in Sawjian sector along the line of control.

Two soldiers came under the avalanche, they said.

“A search operation was started immediately and the duo trapped under snow were evacuated,” they said.

However, one died on the spot and another sepoy Harpreet Singh of Punjab was taken to nearby army’s health facility for treatment, they said.

The deceased has been identified as Lance Naik Sapan Mehra of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.

Station House Officer (SHO), Mandi, Anil Sharma also confirmed the incident. (GNS)

Youth’s body found in Medhar Poonch, pulled out by breaking window panes of his vehicle

Poonch, Jan 2 (GNS): Body of a youth was found under suspicious conditions in Medhar area of Poonch in Jammu division on Thursday, officials said.

They said that soon after receiving the report, SHO Inayat Ahmad led a police party and reached the spot near a service station where the youth, a B.Ed student, was found on the driver’s seat of his maruti car. The police had to break the vehicle window to pull out the youth, they said.

“He was found dead on driver’s seat and shifted to hospital where doctors confirmed him to be dead,” the sources said. The deceased has been identified as Imran Gorsi son of Abdul Rassaq Ardi Medhar.
Talking to GNS, the SHO Inayat Ahmad said that death seems suspicious and inquest proceedings have been imitated under 174 CrPC.

BMO Medhar Dr Pervaiz Ahmad told GNS that post-mortem of the body has been completed and body was being handed over to the family for last rites. As per family sources, the youth’s father works in Saudi Arabia. (GNS)

Pulwama Encounter : Clashes erupted near encounter site

Srinagar, Jan 03 : Intense clashes erupted between government forces and protesters in Gulshanpora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday morning.

Pertinently earlier this day a gunfight raged between militants and forces in the village after a search operation was launched in the area.

Sources said that during initial exchange of fire between militants and forces, scores of youth took to streets and started pelting stones on forces to disrupt their operation and help hiding militants escape.

Clashes were going on when reports last came in.

Minimum temperature drops in J&K; rain, snow likely

The minimum temperature across the Kashmir Valley dropped on Thursday due to clear night sky as the weather office forecast another spell of rain and snow beginning Friday.

“We are expecting another spell of moderate rain and snowfall from Friday afternoon. The weather will remain inclement till January 6 and there would be improvement after that,” a Met department official said.

Srinagar recorded 0.2 degree Celsius as the minimum temperature on Thursday while Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 7.3 and minus 8.5 degree Celsius, respectively.

Leh recorded minus 13.3 degree Celsius and it was minus 17.6 degree Celsius in Kargil. Drass was coldest town in Jammu and Kashmir where the minimum temperature was minus 19.7 degree Celsius.

Jammu had 6.5 degrees Celsius, Katra 5.8 degrees Celsius, Batote 0.1 degree Celsius, Bannihal minus 0.4 degree Celsius and Bhaderwah minus 1.9 degree Celsius as the minimum temperature on Thursday. (IANS)

Sopore Executive Officer Assumes Charge
