As Home Minister Amit Shah Set to Land in Srinagar Today, Another Hurriyat Leader Shuns Separatism

Srinagar, April 7 : Another prominent separatist voice has formally disassociated from the Hurriyat fold and pledged unconditional allegiance to the Constitution of India.

The latest to distance himself from the separatist ideology is Bashir Ahmad Andrabi, son of Mohammad Amin Andrabi, Chairman of the Kashmir Freedom Front (KFF), a once-prominent name in the separatist camp.

In a signed public declaration, Andrabi categorically stated that neither he nor his organization ‘Kashmir Freedom Front’ has “any ties whatsoever” with the All Parties Hurriyat Conference – be it the Geelani (G) or Mirwaiz (M) factions – or with any other separatist group.

“We strongly oppose the ideology of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, as it has failed to effectively address the aspirations and grievances of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Andrabi said in the declaration.

He warned that any unauthorized use of his or his organization’s name in association with the Hurriyat or related factions would invite strict legal action.

“My organization and I are dedicated to upholding the Constitution of India. We do not affiliate with any group that works against the interests of India,” he affirmed.

Wave of Renunciations Continues

This development follows a string of similar declarations made just last week by other key figures from the separatist ecosystem.

Among them, Ghulam Nabi War, Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Tehreek-i-Istiqamat, publicly cut all ties with the APHC factions, stating that the Hurriyat had “lost the ground” and “failed at every step to represent the people’s aspirations.”

Speaking to the Media, War declared, “I have long before implicitly severed my ties with separatist ideology and today, I officially and explicitly sever my connections from either of the factions.” He made it clear that neither his name nor that of his organization shall be used in connection with any ideology contrary to the idea of India, warning of legal consequences for any such misuse.

“Any misadventure in this regard shall have to face legal action and bear the brunt of the law of the land,” he said.

Momentum Gathers Against Separatist Politics

The political momentum against separatism has been steadily building. Just a day before War’s announcement, two organizations – Jammu & Kashmir Democratic Political Movement (DPM) and Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement – had publicly disassociated themselves from the Hurriyat, a move that drew praise from Home Minister Amit Shah.

Calling it a “significant victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a peaceful and united India,” Shah hailed the shift as a testament to the growing national integration in the region post the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

Symbolism in Shah’s Visit

The timing of Andrabi’s declaration on the day of Home Minister Amit Shah’s arrival in Srinagar today, is seen as highly symbolic. Political observers note it as another signal of the crumbling of separatist structures in the Valley and the rise of a new political narrative that aligns itself with the Indian constitutional framework.

As more former Hurriyat leaders and outfits drift away from separatist politics, the latest wave of resignations is being seen as a clear indicator that the ideological space once occupied by the Hurriyat is ‘rapidly shrinking’ – making room for a political discourse anchored in constitutionalism, peace, and development, they said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday and meet the families of the policemen who died in a recent encounter with terrorists.

The Union Home Minister will visit a forward post along the India-Pakistan border and review the security situation and development initiatives during his tour. He will fly to Srinagar in the afternoon.

Officials said police and security forces have been put on high alert in view of HM Shah’s visit. The home minister will visit the BSF Border Outpost Vinay in Kathua and assess the ground situation there.

HM Shah is also scheduled to meet the family members of the martyrs of the Jammu and Kashmir Police at the Raj Bhavan in Jammu and give appointment letters to some of them selected on compassionate grounds.

On April 8, Shah will first take stock of various development programmes in the union territory (UT) at a meeting to be held at the Raj Bhawan in Srinagar. Subsequently, he will attend another meeting at the Raj Bhavan, where the security situation in the UT will be reviewed.

He will also visit the family of Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Bhat in Srinagar. The officer died on September 13, 2023, while fighting terrorists in the Kokernag area of the Anantnag district. The home minister will review various developmental projects during his stay in Srinagar.

He had a nearly two-hour long meeting with the BJP MLAs at the Trikuta Nagar headquarters of the party in Jammu Sunday evening. He said the situation would soon be normal in Jammu as the security forces were on the job.

He repeated that the stand on statehood is clear, and it would be restored at the appropriate time. This is Amit Shah’s first visit to J&K after an elected government took office in October last year.

Security across Srinagar city and the rest of the Valley has been heightened ahead of the Union Home Minister’s visit to Kashmir Valley. In Srinagar, city roads are being closely monitored, and additional checkpoints have been established.

The checking of people has been intensified at multiple points while drone surveillance is being carried out around vital installations and strategic locations to ensure foolproof security.

Asian stock markets crash: China, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan markets top losers

0

Asian stock markets witnessed a major sell-off on Monday after US President Donald Trump announced a new round of tariffs. The markets opened with heavy selling pressure, reflecting growing fears over the impact of the tariffs on global trade and economic growth.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index dropped sharply by 5.79 per cent, leading the decline across the region. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index followed with a steep fall of around 10 per cent.

Taiwan’s Taiwan Weighted Index also saw a major slide, losing 9.61 per cent in early trade. South Korea’s KOSPI index was down by 4.14 per cent, while China’s Shanghai Composite fell by 6.5 per cent at the time of filing this report.

Australia’s benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 also registered a decline of 3.82 per cent, indicating that the sell-off was not limited to major manufacturing economies alone but had spread across the Asia-Pacific region.

The impact of Trump’s tariff announcement was also visible in the American markets. Futures of the US stock index Dow Jones were down by 2.22 per cent, suggesting a negative start for the US markets as well.

Experts believe that the continued sell-off in global equity markets is due to the rising uncertainty caused by the tariffs. The new tariff measures have cast dark clouds over the global economic outlook. Major Asian economies, which depend heavily on exports to the U.S., are expected to be hit hard once the tariff implementation begins.

Investors are worried that global trade could slow down significantly, affecting corporate earnings and economic growth worldwide. The market reaction reflects growing concerns among investors about the future of international trade and the health of the global economy.

As the US stock markets tumbled after the imposition of retaliatory tariffs, US President Donald Trump said, “…I don’t want anything to go down. But, sometimes, you have to take medicines to fix up things.”

Last week Indian stock indices also closed the week on a sour note, weighed down by the Trump reciprocal tariffs and the uncertainties surrounding them. The Sensex slumped about 2,100 points this week.

“Investors are expected to closely monitor any countermeasures implemented by global trade partners, which could further exacerbate geopolitical and economic uncertainty. This cautious sentiment is reflected in the sustained rally in gold and bond prices, underscoring a pronounced shift toward safe-haven assets,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.

The Gift Nifty Futures are indicating a negative start for Indian stock markets also. (ANI)

Amit Shah holds meeting with BJP MLAs, office-bearers in Jammu

0

Jammu — Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who reached Jammu on Sunday to commence his three-day Jammu and Kashmir tour, held a closed-door meeting with BJP MLAs and office-bearers.

This is Shah’s first visit to the Union Territory after the formation of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government in October. The visit also holds significance in the wake of a massive anti-terrorist operation currently underway in Kathua district.

Shah, who landed in Jammu around 6:50 pm, was received by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union minister Jitendra Singh, and other BJP leaders, including its Jammu and Kashmir unit chief Sat Sharma and national general secretary in-charge Jammu and Kashmir Tarun Chugh.

Former state chief Ravinder Raina and ex-deputy chief ministers Kavinder Gupta and Nirmal Singh were also present.

Shah was escorted to the Raj Bhavan and later visited the BJP headquarters at Trikuta Nagar to chair a meeting of party MLAs and other office-bearers, officials said.

The meeting, which started around 8:30 pm, continued for nearly two hours.

“Shah received feedback from the legislators on the challenges posed by drug trafficking and concerns on the security front. He guided the legislators on the strategy to counter the National Conference, which wants to confuse the Muslim society on the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, the abrogated Article 370 and statehood issues,” Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma said after the meeting.

The home minister also guided the legislators on the strategy to counter the Union Territory government’s “anti-people policies” within and outside the assembly, he added.

Raina said Shah was highly appreciative of BJP workers for the landslide victories of party candidates in the Jammu region in the assembly election and asked them to work to further strengthen the organisation across the Union Territory.

The BJP bagged a record 29 seats in the Jammu region.

During his trip, Shah will visit a forward post along the India-Pakistan border and review the security situation and development initiatives.

Shah’s visit to the BJP headquarters coincided with the party’s foundation day, which was celebrated by workers and leaders with great fervour earlier in the day.

Police and security forces have been put on high alert for Shah’s visit, the officials said.

On Monday, Shah will visit the Border Security Force’s (BSF) ‘Vinay’ outpost in Kathua and assess the ground situation.

A massive search operation has been underway in the forested areas of Kathua since March 23 after the police and other security forces intercepted five terrorists who had infiltrated from across the International Border in the Hiranagar sector.

Four policemen and two terrorists were killed in a fierce gunfight on March 27.

Shah is also scheduled to meet the family members of the martyrs of the Jammu and Kashmir Police at the Raj Bhavan in Jammu on Monday and hand over appointment letters to some of them selected on compassionate grounds.

On Tuesday, Shah will first take stock of various development programmes in a meeting at the Raj Bhavan in Srinagar.

He will then attend another meeting to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the officials said.

Earlier in the day, BJP state chief Sat Sharma hoisted the party flag at the headquarters in presence of senior leaders, including MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, former deputy chief minister Gupta, and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma.

Party flags were also hoisted at all organisational district headquarters, BJP offices, and on rooftops of homes of workers across Jammu and Kashmir to mark the BJP’s foundation day, a spokesperson said. — (PTI)

Vande Bharat Train: A Catalyst for Economic Change in Kashmir

KD Special Correspondent

Srinagar, April 7 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the inaugural Vande Bharat Express service connecting Katra to Kashmir on April 19, marking a significant milestone in linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.

Launched in 1997, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project has successfully navigated various geological and topographical challenges to become operational. Its completion is a testament to India’s engineering capabilities. The railway stretches 272 kilometers and features 38 tunnels and 927 bridges, including the highest railway bridge in the world over the Chenab River.

The arrival of the Vande Bharat train in Kashmir is anticipated to bring major changes to the region, with the potential to substantially enhance local commerce and improve connectivity across the valley.

Officials and business leaders, speaking to Kashmir Despatch, are optimistic that this train service will ease travel for residents while also attracting tourists, thus positively impacting the local economy.

Local entrepreneur Amina Khan shared her excitement, stating, “The introduction of the Vande Bharat train will simplify access for visitors wanting to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir. We believe that this new level of accessibility will lead to an increase in tourist numbers, which will greatly benefit local shops and dining establishments.”

Government representatives echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the economic possibilities presented by the new train service. By linking key towns and cities in the valley to other parts of India, it is expected to foster trade and create new employment opportunities in various sectors, including hospitality, retail, and agriculture.

Tourism, which is vital to Kashmir’s economy, is expected to thrive with this initiative. The Vande Bharat train will connect popular tourist attractions like Gulmarg and Pahalgam to urban centers, enhancing the convenience for travelers wishing to experience the region.

Additionally, experts suggest that enhancements in transportation infrastructure may lead to increased production and distribution of local handicrafts, allowing artisans to reach broader markets.

“The launch of this rail link is more than a mere infrastructural achievement; it represents a significant advancement in accessibility for Kashmiris, especially during the challenging winter months when road travel often becomes difficult. This enhanced connectivity is set to stimulate tourism and local businesses while bridging the geographical and emotional distance that has historically existed with the rest of the nation. Although we must be vigilant about maintaining operations during unfavorable weather, the true benefits of this rail service will unfold as the region adjusts to these developments,” noted experts.

World Health Day 2025: A Renewed Call for Health Equity Across India

Article written by Harpreet Sandhu, State Information Commissioner of Punjab.

As the sun rises on World Health Day 2025, India stands at a crossroads. The theme, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” is not merely a slogan—it is a clarion call to dismantle barriers and reimagine a nation where health justice is non-negotiable. In a country marked by staggering diversity, the pursuit of equitable healthcare demands urgent action, innovative solutions, and unwavering solidarity.

A Vision Rooted in Justice

Health equity transcends access to hospitals; it embodies dignity, opportunity, and the right to thrive. Yet, India’s healthcare landscape remains fractured. Rural clinics languish without supplies, urban slums grapple with overcrowded facilities, and marginalized communities face systemic neglect. The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare these fault lines, exposing how geography, income, and social status dictate survival. This World Health Day, we must confront an uncomfortable truth: until every Indian can claim their right to health, our progress remains incomplete.

Bridging the Divide: From Policy to Practice
Central and state governments have launched transformative schemes like Ayushman Bharat and the National Health Mission, yet implementation gaps persist. For instance, while urban centers boast cutting-edge hospitals, rural areas often lack basic infrastructure. To bridge this chasm, states must prioritize:

  • Decentralized Healthcare: Empower local governance to tailor solutions to regional needs.
  • Workforce Expansion: Recruit and train community health workers in underserved zones.
  • Digital Innovation: Scale telemedicine and mobile clinics to reach remote populations.

Kerala’s grassroots health councils and Tamil Nadu’s drug procurement models offer blueprints for success. Replicating such initiatives could catalyze a nationwide shift toward preventive care and early intervention.

The Youth Imperative
India’s demographic dividend—its youth—holds the key to lasting change. Educational institutions must integrate health literacy into curricula, fostering a generation that views wellness as a collective responsibility. Imagine campuses hosting vaccination drives, mental health workshops, and nutrition campaigns. By embedding health consciousness into daily life, young Indians can dismantle stigma and drive demand for accountability.

Corporate and Community Synergy
Progress hinges on collaboration. Private sector investment can bolster infrastructure, while NGOs amplify outreach. Consider partnerships like Mumbai’s slum health networks, where NGOs and municipal bodies jointly tackle tuberculosis. Similarly, corporate CSR initiatives could fund mobile diagnostic units or subsidize treatments for rare diseases.

A Call to Action
World Health Day is both a celebration and a challenge. Let this milestone inspire:

  • Citizens: Advocate for local health budgets and participate in screening camps.
  • Policymakers: Allocate resources to maternal health, mental wellness, and sanitation.
  • Healthcare Providers: Embrace empathy and cultural sensitivity in patient care.

As Harpreet Sandhu, State Information Commissioner, Punjab, aptly notes, “Health is the bedrock of human potential—a treasure we must safeguard through unity and innovation.”

The Road Ahead
The path to equity is arduous, but not insurmountable. By prioritizing primary care, leveraging technology, and fostering grassroots leadership, India can script a future where no child dies of preventable causes, no woman suffers maternal neglect, and no family is bankrupted by illness. Let 2025 be the year we move from rhetoric to reality, ensuring that “Healthy Beginnings” are not a privilege, but a promise for all.

On this World Health Day, let us pledge: Health for One, Health for All.

We still consider J&K a state, wish to be vital part of country’s progress journey: CM Omar Abdullah

Owais Gul

Srinagar, Apr 06 : Reaffirming Jammu and Kashmir’s emotional and constitutional connection with New Delhi, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that the people of J&K still consider it a state in spirit and wish to be a vital part of the country’s journey of progress.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 3rd Lok Samvardhan Parv—an event celebrating unity, participation, and progress—the Chief Minister, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) welcomed Union Minister of Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju and made an earnest appeal for continued support from the Centre.

“Jammu and Kashmir has faced a lot of problems in the past, but we are slowly emerging from those shadows. We want J&K to become a part and parcel of the country’s progress,” he added.

“Wherever you can help us in this regard, please do help us by clearing our proposals so that people of J&K get benefitted,” he said.

Praising the Lok Samvardhan Parv for offering a platform to the people of J&K, Abdullah said, “This programme has provided an opportunity for artisans and others from the region to exhibit their talent. Such platforms not only encourage participation but also strengthen the cultural fabric of the nation.”

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the challenges associated with Rijiju’s portfolio. “The portfolio of Rijiju sahib looks simple, but in fact, it’s a difficult one as people across the country are diverse, they have different religions, cultures…” he remarked, underlining the complexity of ensuring unity in diversity.

Abdullah expressed hope that the Centre would extend all possible assistance to support the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially at a time when the region is looking forward to a new chapter of peace and prosperity.
