NEW DELHI, May 1: In the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that has sent shockwaves across the nation, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leaders have formally appealed for a special session of Parliament to display national unity and resolve against terrorism.
In two separate but similarly worded letters addressed to the presiding officers of both Houses of Parliament, CPI(M) leaders Bikashranjan Bhattacharyya and K. Radhakrishnan called for immediate convening of a joint session to discuss the tragic incident and chart a national response.

Bikashranjan Bhattacharyya, a Rajya Sabha Member and Leader of the CPI(M) Group in the Upper House, wrote to Rajya Sabha Chairman on April 30, 2025. He termed the terrorist attack in Pahalgam as an incident that has “outraged every Indian.” Emphasizing national solidarity, he stated, “At this critical time, India must show that we will always stand together against terrorism.” He urged that a special session of both Houses be convened “where the representatives of the people can show their unity and support.”

Similarly, K. Radhakrishnan, CPI(M) Lok Sabha MP from Alathur, Kerala, addressed a letter to the Speaker of Lok Sabha on the same date. Echoing the sentiments expressed by Bhattacharyya, Radhakrishnan reiterated the party’s belief in a united parliamentary stand, adding that convening a joint session would demonstrate the nation’s collective resolve against such acts of terror.
The CPI(M)’s strong demand reflects growing calls across party lines for Parliament to speak in one voice on matters of national security. The Pahalgam terror attack, the details of which are still emerging, has already led to heightened security measures and widespread political condemnation.
The party’s appeal comes amid increasing pressure on the central government to ensure accountability and present a coherent strategy to combat terrorism, particularly in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir.
A response from either House regarding the request for a special session is awaited.
