New Delhi, August 9: The Budget Session, 2024 of the Indian Parliament has been adjourned sine die after a highly productive period that saw the passing of crucial legislation and in-depth discussions on various national issues.
This was the first Budget Session as per Kashmir Despatch Correspondent, after the constitution of the 18th Lok Sabha, and it commenced on July 22, 2024. The Union Budget for 2024-25, along with the Budget of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, was presented in the Lok Sabha on July 23, 2024.
The general discussion on the Union Budget was held in both Houses, with the Lok Sabha engaging for 27 hours and 19 minutes against the allotted 20 hours, and the Rajya Sabha for 22 hours and 40 minutes against the allotted 20 hours. This intense scrutiny of the Budget underscores the commitment of lawmakers to providing effective oversight.
As per insiders, In the Lok Sabha, the House discussed and adopted the Demands for Grants relating to key ministries such as Railways, Education, Health and Family Welfare, and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The remaining Demands for Grants were put to a vote on August 5, 2024, and the related Appropriation Bill was also passed on the same day.
The Lok Sabha also passed the Bhartiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024, which aims to provide comprehensive regulation and control of the aviation sector, from design and manufacturing to operation and trade.
Discussions on pressing national issues, such as India’s preparedness for the upcoming Olympic Games and the tragic incident of student deaths in a Delhi coaching institute, also took place in both Houses.
The productivity of the Lok Sabha during the Budget Session, 2024 was approximately 136%, while that of the Rajya Sabha was approximately 118%, underscoring the dedication of lawmakers to their legislative duties.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 has been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for further examination, showcasing the Parliament’s commitment to thorough deliberation on important matters.
