Ganderbal, June 2: Residents of New Colony Gangerhama in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have urged the authorities to construct boundary walls along both sides of the canal passing through the area and undertake immediate repairs to leakages that are causing inconvenience to the local population.
Locals said the damaged portions of the canal and persistent leakages have raised safety concerns and led to the wastage of water.
They appealed to the concerned department to address the issue at the earliest and ensure proper maintenance of the canal infrastructure.
Speaking to Kashmir Despatch, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Irrigation, Syed Asif, said that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Maryab Canal and Sherpathri Canal has already been submitted under the NABARD scheme.
“The DPR has been submitted, and once it receives approval, the proposed works, including repairs and other necessary improvements, will be taken up,” he said.
Residents have expressed hope that the project will be approved soon so that long-pending issues related to the canals can be resolved and adequate safety measures put in place.
