The recent reports suggesting a considerable increase in crimes against women is a matter of serious concern for everybody in Jammu and Kashmir. Government of the day needs to strictly enforce the laws that prevent such incidents wherein the women are subjected to inhuman and barbaric treatment.
While it is true that there are ample number of laws existing in the book abhorring the crimes against women and promising stern punishment to the culprits but the enforcement of these laws is terribly missing. The law enforcement agencies need to get proactive and take a serious cognizance of such crimes which are a blot on the face of any civilized society in the world.
The women in Kashmir are not new to these unnatural mishaps but with the passage of time the government used to promise that they are safe and the efforts are on to make this region free of crime against women.
Be it the case of alleged burning of daughter-in-law in Anantnag or the alleged rape of a minor girl in Qazigund, the government must serious take some concrete measures to identify the black sheep and take a stern action against them so as to provide some deterrence to such heinous crimes.
The police must also act swiftly on the complaints of eve teasing pouring in from the areas full of coaching centers or other academic institutions. Religious scholars and clerics also have a role to play to make the people aware about their religious and moral obligations. Parents too have a crucial role to play in such a murky situation.
