Srinagar, May 06: At least 10 persons were injured when government forces resorted to teargas shelling and pellet firing to break up protests that rocked south Kashmir parts on Wednesday against the killing of Hizbul chief Riyaz Naikoo, his associate in Beighpora area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Witnesses told Kashmir Despatch, protests, and clashes erupted in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district as soon as news about the killing of Hizb chief Riyaz Naikoo spread in the area. They said youth took to streets and staged massive pro-freedom demonstrations near the gunfight site. They later clashed with police and paramilitary forces in the area.
Witnesses said youth pelted stones on forces who retaliated by lobbing numerous teargas shells. The pitched-battles continued till this evening. Witnesses said at least 10 youth sustained injuries in the clashes and were rushed to nearby hospital where few were rushed to Srinagar medical institute for advanced treatment.
Earlier ANI quoted CRPF Official as saying that clashes erupted near the gunfight site.
Meanwhile, two more militants were killed in encounter with government forces at Sarshali Khrew area of Awantipora, police said on Wednesday in a statement issued to Kashmir Despatch.
In wake of the killing of Hizb chief authorities in Kashmir suspended voice calls as well as internet services to avoid any law and order problem for precautionary measures.
