RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Warns Against Politicisation of Protests, Calls for National Unity

Says Democratic Agitations Must Focus on Solutions; Raises Concerns Over Social Divisions, Digital Content and Drug Abuse

Nagpur, October 21: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has cautioned that public protests, when driven by political motives rather than genuine public concerns, can deepen divisions in society and create hostility among individuals, communities and ideological groups.

Addressing the RSS’s annual Vijayadashami gathering in Nagpur on Tuesday, Bhagwat said democratic protests should serve as a means of resolving public grievances instead of becoming instruments for advancing political interests.

Referring to political upheavals in Bangladesh, Nepal, France and Albania, he observed that movements seeking a change of government do not necessarily address the underlying problems faced by people.

According to Bhagwat, the expectation that changing a political regime would automatically transform the prevailing situation often fails to produce the desired results.

He also expressed concern that certain international forces could seek to weaken India’s position as the country continues to strengthen its economic, political and strategic capabilities. He maintained that a more powerful India could challenge the dominance of established global powers.

Calls for Responsible Protests in a Democracy

Emphasising the importance of democratic expression, Bhagwat said protests are an inevitable part of a democratic system, but their ultimate objective should be to find practical solutions to people’s problems.

He cautioned that demonstrations could lose their constructive purpose when they are motivated by hostility towards particular individuals, organisations or ideologies.

The RSS chief urged political leaders, protesters and administrative authorities to exercise restraint and ensure that public disagreements do not create bitterness or undermine social harmony.

He further stressed that strong emotions and differences of opinion must be expressed within the framework of the Constitution, responsible public discourse and accepted standards of civil conduct.

Raises Concern Over Digital Content and Youth

Bhagwat also highlighted the need to help young people develop the ability to distinguish between responsible and harmful information, particularly in an era of unrestricted digital access.

Expressing concern over potentially harmful material available on over-the-top (OTT) platforms and social media, he called for consideration of appropriate safeguards in the broader public interest.

He noted that several countries had introduced restrictions or regulatory measures concerning digital platforms and said the discussion around similar safeguards had also gained attention in India.

At the same time, he emphasised that regulation alone would not be sufficient. Young people must also be encouraged to develop sound judgement and make responsible choices while consuming online content.

Warns Against Consumerism, Highlights Drug Abuse

The RSS chief said development should not be measured exclusively through material prosperity or consumer comforts.

While acknowledging the contribution of science and technology to improving living standards and encouraging rational thinking, he maintained that these should remain instruments for broader human progress rather than ends in themselves.

He cautioned that excessive emphasis on consumerism and material possessions could come at the cost of social well-being and human values.

Bhagwat also described drug addiction as a serious national concern, calling for timely intervention by both the government and society. He stressed the role of parents, elders and families in guiding young people away from substance abuse and other harmful influences.

Links Himalayan Flooding to Development Concerns

Referring to the devastating floods in Nepal, Bhagwat suggested that unbalanced development across the Himalayan region could be among the factors contributing to environmental challenges.

He underlined the importance of considering the wider ecological consequences of development activities across the Himalayan belt, which extends across several countries.

Emphasises Social Harmony and National Cohesion

Throughout his address, Bhagwat called for greater public awareness of attempts to exploit social differences and weaken confidence in national institutions.

He stressed the importance of preserving mutual respect, strengthening social bonds and ensuring that disagreements do not become a source of lasting division.

The address formed part of the RSS’s annual Vijayadashami programme in Nagpur, which also marked the conclusion of the organisation’s centenary-year celebrations.

Bhagwat’s remarks covered democratic responsibility, national unity, youth development, digital media, substance abuse and the need for a balanced approach to social and economic progress.
