Sarpanchs, Panchs at safer places: IGP Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 17: Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar Monday said that Sarpanchs, Panchs and BDC’s have not been detained but kept at safer places till suitable arrangements are made for them.  


The development comes after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) two activists were killed in two seperate militant attacks in Kashmir valley last week.
Details available with Kashmir Despatch, on 6 August a BJP sarpanch Sajjad Khanday was killed in South Kashmir’s Qazigund area outside his residence.


As reported by this newspaper three days after Qazigund attack, another BJP sarpanch Abdul Hamid Najar son of Jamal Najar resident of Moheindpora Budgam was killed in militant attack.


The attacks have created a fear among BJP workers, Panches and Sarpanches in the valley. After these attacks, several BJP workers had announced their dissociation with the party.


“We have been facing threats consistently from militant groups, we have to work for the welfare the Union Territory. But consistent threats have taken a heavy toll on us and our family. All we want is security so that we can live peacefully said a sarpanch to this newspaper,”.  


Talking to Kashmir Despatch, IGP Vijay Kumar refuted these reports that these Sarpanchs, Panchs and BDC’s have been detained. He said that they have been kept at safer places and this measure has been taken for their safety. “They will remain there till safer arrangements are made for them,” he said.
