Senior Pakistani Journalist released after 12 hours of abduction

Date:

Pakistan’s senior journalist Matiullah Jan was abducted from outside a local school in Islamabad on Tuesday morning and released late in the night after 12 hours.

“Matiullah Jan returned home late on Tuesday night, nearly 12 hours after he was abducted from Islamabad’s Sector G-6 in broad daylight,” Dawn News reported, quoting Matiullah’s family.

They added that Matiullah was released by unidentified persons in a deserted area in Fateh Jang, outside the capital. He is sound and was not tortured during the period of his abduction, the report read.
The journalist’s abduction recorded in the CCTV camera footage shows Matiullah’s car being surrounded outside a school by three-four cars. Men in plain clothes and some in Police uniform got down and were seen encircling Matiullah’s car.

In the video, Matiullah is seen throwing his phone over the wall into a school compound, but his kidnappers managed to get the phone back.

The journalist had been summoned and was to appear before the court on Wednesday in connection with a contempt case. The case will be heard by a bench of three members of the apex court. The bench will be headed by the Chief Justice.
In the wake of such summons, Pakistani journalists have expressed concern over the safety and security of the Journalist.

There have been a few attempts to attack Jan while he was travelling around the city.

Journalist, Aima Khosa has termed this summoning as “a concerted effort to silence him.”
