Ganderbal, Nov 21 : Several villages in Zazna area of this central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are facing an acute drinking water crisis due to the frequent glitches in the faulty pump station in the area.

The people in these villages used to get water supply from the master plan scheme established at Lar but that has been stopped. Now the locals are left with no option but to consume contaminated water.

The residents of many villages in Zazna are seen carrying handcarts and tractors to fetch water from either tube wells or river Jhelum which is far away from the area. Since the water of tube wells and river is unfiltered and contaminated, most of the population, especially children, is suffering from water-borne diseases, locals told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

The members of Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) claim that the budget of Rs 23 lakh received from the government for the water supply scheme has been handed over to the concerned department almost six months ago. “Those funds have not been utilised yet by the department yet,” the PRI members alleged.

The locals have appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and District Development Commissioner (DDC) Ganderbal Shyambir to intervene and resolve the “grave issue” faced by the people of several villages—(KNO)
