SRINAGAR, Dec 10: The Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2024, India’s flagship initiative to foster innovation among young minds, is set to host its grand finale from December 11 to 15, 2024. The event will take place across 51 nodal centers nationwide, bringing together 1,300 teams and over 10,800 participants in a showcase of creativity and problem-solving.
Tackling National Challenges
This year, SIH 2024 presents 254 problem statements submitted by 54 Ministries, Departments, State Governments, PSUs, and Industries, focusing on critical challenges across various sectors. Notable problem statements include:
“Enhancing Images of Darker Regions on the Moon” by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
“AI-Driven Ganga Water Quality Monitoring” by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
These problem statements underline the event’s emphasis on leveraging technology to address key national and scientific issues.
Unprecedented Participation
SIH 2024 has set new benchmarks for participation.
A staggering 86,000 teams competed at the institute level, with 49,000 teams advancing to the national round.
The number of internal hackathons at institutes soared to over 2,247, marking a 150% increase from 2023.
This exponential growth reflects the program’s popularity and its growing impact on India’s innovation ecosystem.
Impact on India’s Innovation Landscape
The Smart India Hackathon has emerged as a vital driver of grassroots innovation, significantly contributing to India’s rise to the 39th rank in the Global Innovation Index (GII). It serves as a bridge between academia and government, encouraging collaboration and practical problem-solving.
Key Contributions and Achievements
Since its inception, SIH has yielded remarkable results, including the development of 754 solutions for 130 problem statements from the Ministry of Education and 273 solutions for 103 ISRO challenges. The Ministry of AYUSH has also actively engaged, inspiring 164 solutions to its 39 problem statements.
Innovative Formats
The hackathon comprises two main formats:
- Software Edition – A 36-hour nonstop coding marathon.
- Hardware Edition – A 5-day intensive competition to build prototypes.
These formats ensure comprehensive solutions to both digital and hardware-focused challenges, pushing participants to think beyond conventional boundaries.
