Srinagar, July 21: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has intensified its drainage and waterlogging response across the city following recent heavy rainfall, deploying sanitation teams and dewatering equipment to clear clogged drains and restore the flow of stormwater in vulnerable areas.
According to officials, field teams responded to waterlogging complaints from different parts of Srinagar by removing silt, solid waste and other obstructions from drains and drainage channels. The civic body said the timely interventions helped ease waterlogging and improve drainage at several affected locations.
To strengthen preparedness, SMC Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb has constituted zone-wise task forces comprising Zonal Sanitation Officers, Zonal Enforcement Officers, Zonal Anti-Encroachment Officers and Ward Officers.
The task forces have been directed to monitor low-lying areas, waterlogging-prone spots and critical drainage points, while ensuring regular clearance of drains, drainage inlets, gratings and channels. They will also oversee the removal of silt and waste that obstruct the free flow of stormwater.
“Prompt field interventions helped address drainage and waterlogging issues across the city. The zone-wise task forces have been constituted to ensure sustained monitoring and a coordinated response, particularly at vulnerable locations,” Haseeb said.
The Corporation said its sanitation, drainage, enforcement and anti-encroachment wings will work in coordination, with additional manpower, machinery and dewatering equipment to be deployed wherever required.
The task forces have also been instructed to respond promptly to public complaints related to blocked drains and waterlogging and submit regular ground reports to senior officials, who will oversee the field operations.
SMC said it will continue to focus on keeping major drainage channels functional, removing emerging bottlenecks and ensuring timely intervention during periods of inclement weather to minimise inconvenience to residents.
