Sopore, July 02 : The Sopore Municipal Council elections will witness a close contest for the presidential post tomorrow on Saturday, as several councilors have submitted their forms for the post.
However, the contest between National Conference’s Masrat Kar and People’s Democratic Party (PDP’s) (Who is also supported by BJP councilors ) Irfan Ali who have filed their forms for president post is not going to be a cake walk for any contestant.
An independent councilor in Sopore told Kashmir Despatch that BJP’s Abdul Ahad and Mohammad Yousuf Radoo of NC have filed the forms for Deputy President post but all eyes are on the president elections as both the councillors Masrat Kar and Irfan Ali rose to fame after they showed their interest in the developmental works of Sopore area.
“It is going to be fierce contest between the two. Hands crossed till the last moment. We can’t depict as who is going to win the elections tomorrow but after all Sopore Municipal Council will no more be a headless institution,” he added.
The elections are being held quite long time after the post of the president Municipal Council Sopore fell vacant a day when majority of the councillors moved a successful no-confidence motion against the former Municipal Council Sopore president, Abdul Ahad Khan on January 18, 2021.
It is pertinent to mention that two councilors Riyaz Ahmad Pir, Shams-U-Din Pir and PSO of another councilor Shafqat Nazir Khan were killed in a militant attack this year in March during a meeting of councilors at Sopore.
