Sopore, Feb 15 : Dozens of youth including students Monday organised an awareness rally on the prevention of road accidents in north Kashmir’s Sopore town.
The rally started from SRM Welkin school with students holding posters and placards displaying messages on prevention of road accidents, advices related to safety measures including wearing of helmets. The rally passed through the several streets of the market creating awareness among the masses.
The rallying students were appreciated across the town for their contributions towards the society.
“Through this rally, we want to spread a positive message and appeal people to follow the traffic guidelines and avoid rash driving. Sensible driving saves your time and life,” said Muntazir Bashir, who was part of the rally.
The rallying students appreciated the steps taken by administration in Sopore town.
“It is a historic decision taken by administration. Providing relief to the people by accomodating street vendors to different location besides putting restrictions on Tonga movement within the muncipal limits is actually giving much needed relief to the people. It will also give a huge relief to the students community as educational institutions are going to open,” the students said.
While talking to Kashmir Despatch they said that the steps of administration inspired them to hold an awareness rally.
“Earlier it was difficult for the common masses to move from one place to another with ease due to traffic jams. But now change is visible.
General masses must also co-operate with administration for making Sopore, a developed town,” they added.
Soon after the rally, the youth gathered at SRM Welkin school and held an awareness program with a large number people and students participating in the program.
On the occasion, speakers deliberated upon several issues including importance of road safety and traffic rules.
The speakers said that lack of knowledge and awareness regarding road traffic rules and regulations, violation of traffic rules, flaws in road design and engineering, along with driver behavior, can be overcome with concerted efforts. They said that to educate and influence the general public about road safety, awareness campaigns are needed.

Speaking on the occasions, ARTO Sopore Mubashir Jan lauded the efforts of students and event organisers for making this awareness program, a reality.

“My best wishes are with the event organisers and people who participated in this program for boosting the efforts of students who came with such a positive message. Such programmes always gives a chance where one can think to work for the change,” SDPO added.
Station House Officer Sopore Azim Iqbal Khan also appreciated event organisers and said Sopore is witnessing a change and our efforts will be on to make it visible on ground.
“Our efforts are for our own people. People must act like responsible citizens and work together with police and administration for more changes on ground. The main motive behind relocation of street vendors is to provide relief to the people here,” Azim added.
He said that if street vendors have been accomodated at Neharpora road which is near to the town then why can’t they cooperate for their own benefits and for the people.
The officer said the step was taken after a thorough investigation and administration had already looked into all angles so that their livelihood will not be effected.
