Tainted Meat Scandal Rocks Kashmir

Date:

CM Orders Crackdown, Labs & Raids to Restore Public Trust

SRINAGAR, Aug 11: Kashmir’s famed culinary identity—built around its centuries-old Wazwan and other traditional delicacies—is facing an unprecedented threat. Recent seizures of rotten meat and unhygienic dressed chicken have shaken public confidence, raising urgent questions about what’s really ending up on people’s plates.

Public outrage reached a boiling point after the Food Safety Department’s recent raids uncovered alarming quantities of unsafe meat and adulterated rice in various parts of the Valley. For many Kashmiris, it’s no longer about culinary pride—it’s about survival and the right to safe, uncontaminated food.

In an urgent response, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a high-level meeting to review the state’s food safety enforcement campaign. Expressing deep concern, he directed that “offenders who play with public health must face the full force of the law” and stressed that such violations must be prosecuted under the Food Safety & Standards Act, with criminal proceedings for the worst offenders.

District-Level Testing & Surprise Raids

To plug glaring gaps in the system, the Chief Minister ordered the creation of food testing laboratories in every district, moving beyond the current setup limited to Jammu and Srinagar. Mobile food testing vans will also be deployed immediately. Entry-point check posts at Lakhanpur and Qazigund will be established to screen all incoming mutton, chicken, and other perishables before they reach the markets.

Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to personally lead surprise inspections of butcher shops, hotels, restaurants, and street vendors, ensuring that no unhygienic food products are sold. The Food Safety and Drugs Organization will receive additional manpower and resources to carry out rigorous monitoring.

Targeting the Rotten Supply Chain

The meeting also focused on cracking down on the illegal bulk import of frozen meat, chicken, and fish from outside J&K, which health experts fear could be laced with harmful chemicals like formaldehyde—a carcinogen linked to rising cancer rates in Kashmir.

Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, Srinagar, Yamin-ul-Nabi, revealed that abandoned consignments of decomposed meat and unlabeled chicken were recently recovered in Nowgam and Pampore. “We are working with the police to trace the culprits. These consignments had no supplier details, suggesting a deep-rooted black market operation,” Nabi said.

Medical Experts Sound Alarm

Dr. Mohammad Salim Khan, Professor and Head of Community Medicine at GMC Srinagar, warned that poor slaughtering, packaging, and storage practices can cause bacterial contamination leading to food poisoning, dysentery, typhoid, and other illnesses. He condemned the use of thermocol boxes for transporting meat in unhygienic conditions and called for the scientific disposal of stale meat through incineration or deep burial.

Prominent physician Dr. Tariq Tramboo cautioned that unregulated frozen meat imports might contain cancer-causing preservatives like formaldehyde.

Public Anger & Social Media Outcry

The revelations have triggered a storm on social media, with prominent journalists and citizens urging buyers to scrutinize meat quality before purchase. Senior journalist Yousuf Jameel advised people to question unrealistically low prices for wazwan items, while Farhat Mir warned against ordering pre-prepared kebabs, ristas, and gustabas from dubious sources.

One user summed up the public sentiment starkly: “Rotten meat in markets, rotten morals in society. The real decay is not just in the food but in the values of those selling it.”

Government’s Final Word

While promising strict action, the Chief Minister urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands and to instead report violations to authorities. An inter-departmental committee will oversee enforcement, licensing of traders, and labeling requirements for all perishable food products.

For now, Kashmiris remain watchful, wondering whether these measures will be enough to restore the sanctity of their food traditions—or if the rot has already set too deep.
