Surpassing 20 K Plus Votes, Marks a New Era in Local Politics!

Sopore, often overlooked and burdened by negative perceptions, particularly during electoral processes, has made a remarkable turnaround in this assembly election. For once, Sopore caught the world’s attention, not only by participating in the electoral process in large numbers but also by creating a festive atmosphere from the very beginning. On Tuesday, with the results of the assembly polls declared, National Conference candidate Irshad Rasool Kar emerged as the highest vote-getter, achieving a historic victory with an impressive margin of 20,356 votes.
According to data available with Kashmir Despatch, a total of 20 candidates contested for the Sopore Assembly Constituency seat, including two-time winner Haji Abdul Rashid, AIP candidate Advocate Mursaleen, and PDP’s Irfan Ali, among others.
The campaign period saw significant shifts in the race, particularly during rallies and on poll day. The outcome not only surprised the entire Sopore community but also made history, as Kar won with an astounding margin of 20,356 votes.
Irshad Rasool Kar, the National Conference candidate, secured a total of 26,975 votes, while Advocate Mursaleen came in second with 6,619 votes, and two-time former MLA Haji Abdul Rashid Dar received 5,167 votes.
After the results were announced, Irshad Rasool Kar spoke exclusively with Kashmir Despatch, stating, “I will fight against the misgovernance that has always held Sopore back in terms of development. I will stand shoulder to shoulder with the people to alleviate their suffering and work towards restoring Sopore’s lost glory—a place once known as ‘Little London.’”
Irshad emphasized that every village in his constituency would be a priority, particularly focusing on farmers’ issues and fulfilling their developmental needs.
He also highlighted the importance of Asia’s second-largest fruit mandi, expressing his commitment to uplift the fruit industry that serves as the backbone of North Kashmir, ensuring support for those involved in this sector.
“The beautification of Sopore and its surrounding villages will be a priority for transforming Sopore from an underdeveloped area to a developed town,” he noted.
Irshad pointed out that Walur Lake has the potential to play a significant role in water tourism, which has been neglected until now. He promised that serious attention would be given to it moving forward.
Notably, the assembly election in Sopore has reshaped not only the political landscape but also the mindset of the people. The active participation of the community in campaigning, rallies, and polling contributed to a celebratory atmosphere.
This was a true celebration of democracy, embraced by the people of Sopore, who reveled in the essence of democratic participation.
