The recent seizure of decomposed meat, poultry, and fish products at multiple locations across Kashmir has exposed a disturbing truth—there is a thriving network that is playing with the health and lives of people for the sake of profit. The sale of adulterated, expired, and rotten food items—particularly meat, chicken, fish, kebabs, and minced meat products—is no longer an isolated malpractice but an organised menace that demands immediate and multi-pronged government intervention.
In light of these shocking revelations, it is high time for the administration to go beyond routine inspections and form dedicated joint teams comprising officials from the Food Safety Department, Crime Branch, and the Anti-Corruption Bureau to conduct an extensive crackdown across the region. These teams must be empowered to carry out surprise inspections in hotels, restaurants, roadside eateries, frozen meat shops, and food outlets. The objective must be clear: unearth and dismantle this supply chain of rot that has crept into our food system.
The public health threat posed by these unscrupulous vendors is grave. Consumption of such adulterated products can lead to severe food poisoning, long-term gastrointestinal diseases, and even fatalities in extreme cases. It is not just an issue of hygiene or regulation—it is a criminal act that borders on attempted murder. It needs to be treated as such.
More concerning is the apparent lack of fear among these offenders. This points to either glaring loopholes in enforcement or an unholy nexus that needs to be investigated thoroughly. This is where the Crime Branch and Anti-Corruption Bureau must step in—not only to catch the culprits but also to probe whether any officials have turned a blind eye in exchange for favours. If such connections are found, they must be exposed and acted upon without hesitation.
The administration must also set up permanent check posts at all entry points to Kashmir—especially those from where frozen meat and poultry products are brought in bulk. These posts should be equipped with veterinary experts and food safety officers to verify the quality and safety of incoming consignments.
Public cooperation is equally important. Citizens must be encouraged to report any suspicious food outlets or vendors, and a helpline or online grievance system must be created for swift action. Awareness campaigns should also be initiated to educate people about the dangers of consuming unregulated meat products.
The recent exposes should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders. Allowing this issue to slide under the carpet now would be nothing short of criminal negligence. The people of Kashmir deserve safe, hygienic, and lawful food. The government must ensure that not a single slab of rotten meat makes it to a dinner plate again.
