SRINAGAR, Dec 5: Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday asserted that the challenging times in Jammu and Kashmir are now a history. He was speaking during a crucial Lok Sabha session focused on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Thakur expressed optimism about the Indian flag proudly flying in every lane of Kashmir, signifying positive transformations in the region.

While addressing legislative matters, Thakur highlighted the improved security scenario in the union territory, emphasizing the absence of stone-pelting incidents that were once symbolic of unrest. He pointed out the significant shift, stating, “Today, not only at Lal Chowk, but the Indian flag is hoisted in every lane in Kashmir.”

Thakur’s remarks resonated with the government’s broader narrative of positive change and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. The decline in stone-pelting incidents, a historical symbol of discord, is considered a notable achievement towards restoring normalcy.

The parliamentary session deliberated on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, aiming to modify existing reservation provisions for better addressing the region’s socio-economic dynamics. Simultaneously, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, sought to refine the administrative framework following the abrogation of Article 370, leading to the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate union territories.

During the Lok Sabha session, lawmakers engaged in a spirited debate, expressing divergent views on the bills’ implications. Thakur’s intervention provided a broader perspective, reflecting the varying opinions on inclusive development and concerns about potential impacts on existing reservation quotas.

Lawmakers emphasized the importance of ensuring that the proposed legislative changes effectively address the unique challenges and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, marking a critical moment in reshaping the socio-political landscape of the union territory.
