Unabated Pandit Killings

Date:

The cold blooded killing of a Kashmiri Pandit, Puran Krishan Bhat in Shopian on Saturday is yet another manifestation of cowardice of the terrorists who on the directions of Pakistan are always in a search of soft targets to accomplish their malicious mission.

While the killing drew widespread condemnations, an interesting aspect of this story was that for the second time Kashmiris in large numbers came out on Sunday to register their protest denouncing such barbaric killings.

People across north, south and central Kashmir staged candlelight protest marches against the killing of a minority community member.

Several peaceful protests and candlelight marches were reported from different places in Kashmir including Shopian, Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam, Anantnag, and Srinagar.

Protesters also expressed solidarity with the family of the slain Pandit. This is the second time when protests were held against the killing of the members of the Kashmiri Pandit community in the district. On August 16, 2022 civil society members held a candlelight protest against the killing of Sunil Kumar.

People in large numbers also took out a protest rally in south Kashmir’s Shopian district against the targeted killing of a minority community member in the area.

However, the bigger question remains how long the killing of innocent civilians will continue in Kashmir. The present dispensation in Delhi needs to chalk out certain concrete measures that can plug loopholes besides making it clear to the neighbouring country Pakistan such heinous crimes would never go unnoticed.

People in Kashmir also need to rise to the occasion and muster the courage to call a spade a spade. Or otherwise, their silence would make these killings a routine matter that will go unabated. People in general, irrespective of their religion or sect, should come forward and unequivocally condemn this brutality so that a clear message is sent to the terrorist organizations in Pakistan that such no more of non sense will be tolerated by Kashmiris, henceforth.
