Calls for Stronger Public Participation, Social Accountability to Curb Rising Drug Abuse Among Youth
Ganderbal, May 10 : Chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board, Darakhshan Andrabi on Sunday said that a united and sustained effort by society, government institutions and youth was essential to realise the vision of a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.
She was addressing the “Asluk Aalav” (The Call for Truth) awareness programme organised at Government Degree College Ganderbal by Al-Rahim Trust in collaboration with several NGOs working on social awareness and reform initiatives across the Union Territory.
Speaking as the chief guest, Andrabi said the youth of Jammu and Kashmir were actively supporting the “Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan” launched under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
She said the peace and developmental changes witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years reflected the people’s support for stability and progress.
“After 2019, people supported the peace initiatives wholeheartedly, and today Jammu and Kashmir is moving towards development and new aspirations. With the same collective spirit, we can successfully eliminate the drug menace from society,” she said.
Highlighting the growing concern over substance abuse, Andrabi stressed that protecting the younger generation from drugs was crucial for ensuring long-term peace, social stability and prosperity in the region.
She also praised the efforts of police and civil administration against drug peddling networks, while calling for tougher action to completely dismantle the illegal narcotics trade operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Strict social accountability is equally important. Society must isolate and discourage those involved in drug trafficking, as social resistance can act as a powerful deterrent against such crimes,” she added.
