Srinagar, June 8: Farmers in Uri have raised alarm over a severe shortage of irrigation water, putting their paddy fields at risk of drying up.
According to local growers, they had successfully sown paddy for the season, but the lack of water supply has left hundreds of kanals of land barren.
“The irrigation department has not issued any notice about the shortage. If water supply is not restored immediately, we stand to lose our entire crop,” said one farmer to GNS.
The situation has sparked concern in the agricultural community, as timely irrigation is crucial for paddy cultivation. Farmers are urging authorities to act quickly to prevent a potential agricultural disaster.
Assistant Executive Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mukhtar Ahmad said the restoration has been delayed as permission from the army is required. The headwork is located across the fence in a village that falls under army jurisdiction.
Ahmad added that the matter has been taken up with the army and expressed hope that the water supply will be restored within a few days.(GNS)
