Baramulla Feb 20:-The residents of Uri in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district staged a protest on Monday against the PDD authorities for a sudden increase in the monthly electricity tariff.
The residents as well as traders blocked the Uri-Muzaaffar Abad highway near the Sub-District Hospital Uri and demanded a rollback of electricity bills.
Speaking with the media as per Kashmir Despatch Correspondent, the protesters said that they are witnessing a regular increase in the tariffs, even as they have now been directed to pay over Rs 1400 per month.
The locals, including PRI members, raised slogans against the Power Development Department (PDD) for the regular hike in electricity bills. “If the same continues, then they are not going to pay the bills and rather ask the PDD authorities to wind up the entire set-up of the electricity in the area,” protesters said.
“For two or three hours of electricity in a day, we have to now pay Rs 1400 even after heaving four power projects in Uri sub district, the electricity is zero, and on top of that, we are now asked to pay bills that are illogical and do not have any logic, and for the last few months we are witnessing a steep rise in the same,” the protesting residents said.
The protesters appealed to LG Manoj Sinha, concerned officials of PDD, and district administration officials in Baramulla to look into the matter and resolve the genuine grievances of these poor people.
Meanwhile, after proper assurance from officials, the protest was called off.
