Valley shuts against ban on Jamaat, attack on JK’s special status

Srinagar, Mar 05 : A complete shutdown was on Tuesday observed across the Valley to protest against the ban imposed on Jamaat-e-Islami and attack on special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, Government of India last week banned Jamaat-e-Islami and also Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Ordinance, bringing persons residing in the areas adjoining International Border within the ambit of reservation at par with persons living in areas adjoining the Line of Control (LoC).

However, to protest against the moves, the valley traders and transporters including KTMF, KEA and FCIK here on Monday called for a valley-wide shutdown today, demanding revocation of ban on Jamaat.

The shutdown call was also supported by Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam and Anjuman Shari Shian headed by top Shia cleric and pro-freedom leader, Aga Syed Hasan Almosvi Alsafvi.

All the shops and business establishments including the fuel stations remained closed while as the passenger traffic was also off the roads. However, a thin movement of private vehicles was seen plying today.

In view of the shutdown call, police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in strength in sensitive areas here to thwart any protests today.

Meanwhile, a top police official said situation across the Valley remained peaceful throughout the day. (KNS)
