Gurez, Oct 18 : With Gurez Valley witnessing heavy influx of tourists for the last two years, Kishanganga river which passes through the enchanting valley is fast turning into a garbage dumping site as the waste is being discharged into the water body.
According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in the absence of the garbage disposal facility for the tourists and people residing on the banks of the Kishangana river, the entire waste is being dumped into the river.
“Until a few years ago, the river was one of the few uncontaminated water bodies in the entire Gurez valley. But with solid waste and sewage generated from homes and commercial establishments being let out into the river at several spots including Main Dawar, the river is now extremely polluted,” locals told Kashmir news observer.
A local Abid Majeed said that heaps of waste piled up on the banks of Dawar.
An official, wishing not to be quoted by name, said: “If anyone is found involved in this act, strict action will be taken against him,” he said, adding that the administration is taking the issue seriously—(KNO)
