Women commission files case against Honey Singh’s vulgar lyrics; rapper booked

Date:

The popular rapper, Yo Yo Honey Singh, has been booked by the Punjab Police on the charge of using ‘vulgar lyrics’ against women in his song ‘Makhna’.

According to the reports, the women commission in Punjab criticised him for his song and has filed a case since it has extremely vulgar and deplorable lyrics towards women.

Mr. Singh has been booked under section 294 (punishment for obscene song and acts) and section 509 (punishment for word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harcharan Singh Bhullar told a news agency.

He has also been charged under section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and relevant section of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, Mr. Bhullar said.

The FIR has been lodged against the rapper at Mataur police station in Punjab’s Mohali district.

In an interview with a news agency, the chairperson of the Punjab Women Commission, Manisha Gulati said, “Honey Singh has used extremely vulgar language in his song. The words used are absolutely irreverent for a woman that’s why we want strict action against Honey Singh and Bhushan Kumar (Managing Director of T-Series). We have written a letter to Punjab government, Director General of Police and home secretary to take action against this song. This is also to set a benchmark so that from now onwards singers or songwriters don’t make songs that disrespect women. The Central government and the Censor board should also intervene and set some kind of bar for musicians.”

The women panel had also asked the police to submit a status report in the matter by 12 July.
