Police Wednesday detained scores of Hurriyat (G) activists after they tried to march towards commercial hub Lal Chowk. The activists of Hurriyat (G) held a protest here at Srinagar’s press enclave against the Village Defense Committee (VDC) who accused them of targeting minority communities in the Rajouri-Poonch belt by demanding disbanding of the VDCs. They were chanting slogans against VDC and were demanding disbanding of VDC’s. Earlier talking to KNS, Nayeem Khan who was heading the protest here said that the members of VDC have looted people so far and have murdered several. “The committee should have been disbanded earlier but unfortunately the government didn’t paid heed over it thereby resulted in the killing of innocents,” he said. Khan said that the members of VDC’s have refused to surrender their guns but the government should snatch their guns at earliest. “Until and unless the dispensation won’t disband the committee, the killing of innocents won’t end in the state as the VDC’s have killed several persons so far,” he said. As soon as the protesters tried to march towards Lal Chowk, police intercepted them and detained scores of Hurriyat (G) activists including Nayeem Khan, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Muhammad Yaseen Atai, Imtiyaz Haider, Gazi Javaid, Umar Aadil Dar, Sajad Ahmad, Jamsheed Khan, Muhmmad Yousuf Mir and Fida Husain. The activists were lodged into Kothibagh police station. Meanwhile, according to the statement, to thwart this protest program, police in the wee hours today detained Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar, APHC Chief Organizer Altaf Ahmad Shah and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat senior leader Raja Mehraj-ud-din at their respective houses.
