Jaish carried the attack: IGP Kashmir

Srinagar, August 14: Ahead of Independence day, suspected militants attacked a police party at Nowgam area of Srinagar on Friday morning killing two cops and leaving another one injured.
An official told Kashmir Despatch that militants fired upon a police party at Nowgam area of Srinagar leaving three cops critically wounded. “All three injured cops were shifted to SMSH hospital, however, two of them succumbed on the way. The third one is being treated at the hospital whose condition is stated to be critical,” he said.
The officer identified two slain cops as Ishfaq Ayoub and Fayaz Ahmed while another policeman who sustained injuries has been identified as Muhammad Ashraf.
According to a tweet by the police department, Kashmir zone police tweeted: “Militants fired indiscriminately on police party near Nowgam bypass. Three police personnel injured. They were shifted to hospital for treatment where two succumbed. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow.”
Meanwhile, speaking about the incident IGP Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar said, Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit carried out the attack on police party at Nowgam Srinagar”.
Kumar said that those responsible for the strike on police personnel at Nowgam area have been identified and action against them will be taken soon.
The IGP said that ahead of August 15 celebrations, the security apparatus was asked to keep vigil on suspected elements as there were inputs that militants will carry out attack in the district Srinagar.
“There was no security lapse. Our men practiced maximum restraint for the safety of civilians, it is why they didn’t retaliate”, IGP added.
Naugam Attack: Police Version
At about 09 30 hrs militants fired indiscriminately upon a joint Naka party of police and security forces at Gulshan Nagar area of Nowgam Srinagar.
In the militant incident, three Police personnel sustained grievous gunshot injuries and were evacuated to the hospital for the treatment of their injuries. However, two injured identified as Fayaz Ahmad and Ishfaq Ayoub of IRP 20th Bn succumbed to their injuries and attained martyrdom.
Police has registered a case under relevant sections of law in this regard. The investigation is in progress.
Later on, in order to pay honor and respect to these martyrs, a wreath lying ceremony was held in Armed Police Complex Humhama, where floral tributes were paid to the martyrs.
RR Bhatnagar advisor to Hon’ble LG J&K led civil and police officers in paying tributes and laying floral wreath on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the martyrs.
The bodies were later on handed over to their next of kins for last rites the statement reads.
